The leaders of Russia, Turkey, and Iran have agreed that Russia will play a key role in negotiating a peace deal for Syria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and their Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Russia's southern resort of Sochi for a trilateral summit on Wednesday.
Russia and Iran support the Syrian administration led by President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey backs anti-government forces.
The 3 leaders agreed they were satisfied with the trilateral partnership aimed at bringing about a truce in Syria. They agreed to continue their cooperation to curb violence.
To this end, they agreed that a meeting, to be attended by members of the Assad administration and anti-government forces, would be held in Sochi. The meeting would take up political processes, including a new constitution, national structure, and implementation of elections.
Putin told reporters he pledged to bring to the table representatives of different political parties, opposition movements, and ethnic groups.
Similar talks, brokered by the United Nations, have been held in Geneva in the past, but without any substantive results.

Zimbabwe's incoming leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has declared that the country is witnessing a "new and unfolding democracy."
Mnangagwa is expected to be sworn in as president on Friday.
The former vice president made his first public speech after arriving back in Zimbabwe on Wednesday. He had fled to neighboring South Africa after being fired by then-President Robert Mugabe early this month.
Addressing a cheering crowd, Mnangagwa hailed what he called a new start for Zimbabwe. He pledged to rebuild the ailing economy and work toward democratization.
Mugabe has been in power for nearly 40 years. But opposition to his autocratic rule surged in recent weeks, prompting parliament to launch impeachment procedures earlier this week. Bowing to pressure, Mugabe announced his resignation on Tuesday.
Before fleeing to South Africa, Mnangagwa had been vying fiercely with Mugabe's wife, Grace, in a race to pick a successor for the longtime ruler.
Mnangagwa was Mugabe's right-hand man and is believed to have been involved in crackdowns on opposition forces.
It remains to be seen how far he will go in democratizing the country.

More than half a million students in South Korea are taking the annual college entrance examination, a test that is known to make or break a young person's career.
The College Scholastic Ability Test took place on Thursday at around 1,200 locations across the country. About 590,000 students picked up their pens shortly before 9 AM.
The nationwide exam was initially set for Thursday last week, but it was postponed after a magnitude-5.4 earthquake struck the southern part of the country.
At one test site in Seoul, young students chanted and held up signs wishing the exam takers good luck.
South Korean authorities take the exam very seriously.
This year, they've deployed 10,000 police officers to offer patrol car or motorcycle rides to students who might be running late.
Aircraft takeoffs and landings were also restricted during the English listening comprehension section of the test.
One student said he spent 3 years preparing for the exam. Another student welcomed the postponement, saying it had given him extra time to study.
