US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in focused on North Korea and trade in their meeting in Seoul on Tuesday.
In a joint press briefing, Moon said the 2 leaders agreed to work toward resolving the North Korean nuclear issue in a peaceful manner.
Trump said North Korea's leader is needlessly threatening millions of lives and urged countries to implement UN Security Council resolutions and cut off business ties with the regime.
Trump also reiterated his call for free, fair and reciprocal trade as the 2 countries renegotiate their free trade agreement.

Japan will expand its sanctions on North Korea, freezing the assets of an additional 9 organizations and 26 individuals to intensify pressure on Pyongyang.
The cabinet approved the measure on Tuesday, one day after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told US President Donald Trump that Japan will strengthen its own set of sanctions on the North. Trump welcomed the move.
The newly added entities are North Korean banks with addresses in China, Russia, Libya and the United Arab Emirates, along with their representatives.
Their inclusion brings the number of those subject to an asset freeze to 84 North Korean organizations and 108 individuals.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters North Korea continues to engage in provocative speech and behavior. He said there's been no progress on the issue of Japanese nationals abducted to that country.
Suga said the government decided to expand the asset freeze from the standpoint of maximizing pressure on the North in unity with the United States. The US announced its latest sanctions in September.
Japan has been strengthening sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs since February last year.
The measures include banning entry of all ships that made port calls in North Korea. Money transfers are also prohibited, except for humanitarian funds in amounts up to about 900 dollars.

The United States will soon stage a naval drill in the Western Pacific, involving 3 aircraft carriers, in an apparent show of force against North Korea.
US government officials say the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Nimitz will take part in the exercise. They will be accompanied by destroyers and other vessels of their carrier strike groups.
The 3 aircraft carriers are already within the operational waters of the 7th Fleet, based in Yokosuka, Japan. The Ronald Reagan was spotted off the Korean Peninsula last week. The 2 other vessels are said to be heading for Asia-Pacific waters from Guam and the Indian Ocean.
An exercise involving 3 US carriers would be the first in the Asia-Pacific region since 2007, when one was held off Guam. A war game involving 2 carriers was staged in the Sea of Japan in June.
The United States is increasing military pressure on North Korea as the country accelerates its nuclear and missile development programs.
Since last month, US forces have deployed submarines, stealth fighters and bombers to the Korean Peninsula, ahead of President Donald Trump's tour of Asia.

North Korea's ruling party newspaper carried a commentary on Tuesday criticizing US President Donald Trump for excessively focusing on possible provocations by the North during his Asian tour.
The Rodong Sinmun condemned the US for ramping up tension by sending 3 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers into waters near the Korean Peninsula to stage a naval drill.
The paper described the plan as a vicious challenge to the Korean people and the international community, who desire a de-escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula, regional peace and security.

The United States is stepping up its missile defense against possible attacks on the US homeland by North Korea.
A Defense Department official told NHK that the deployment of 8 more missile interceptors had been completed in the state of Alaska by Thursday.
With this move, a total of 44 ground-based interceptors are now deployed in Alaska and California to counter the threat of North Korean intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Meanwhile, the White House said the administration under President Donald Trump plans to continue boosting missile defense against North Korea from next year onward. It asked Congress to approve an additional budget of 4 billion dollars.
According to its letter delivered to Congress, the budget may cover the costs for the additional deployment of up to 20 ground-based interceptors, the construction of an interceptor field at the Alaska base, and the procurement of Aegis-ship-based SM-3 Block IIA interceptors.

US researchers analyzing developments in North Korea say the country could be preparing a new tunnel complex for a nuclear test.
A team at Johns Hopkins University released on Monday satellite imagery of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site taken after North Korea's 6th nuclear test in September.
The images show signs of heightened activity, such as mining carts and equipment, near the West Portal tunnel complex, where no tests have been conducted.
But structures have been removed from the North Portal tunnel complex, the site of 5 tests in the past.
The team suggests North Korea may have been forced to abandon the North Portal complex following a landslide triggered by the September nuclear test.

The USS Ronald Reagan has been operating in the Sea of Japan near the Korean Peninsula since mid-October in case of possible provocations from North Korea.
MSDF Chief of Staff Yutaka Murakawa said the latest drills were not held with any specific country in mind. He said the aim was to deepen mutual understanding and promote ties among the 3 countries.

The US Air Force says it failed to report the Texas shooter's criminal history to judicial authorities.
Observers say that if such records had been entered into a national criminal database, the man would not have been able to purchase guns.
Former Air Force member Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire on a congregation at a church in a small community near San Antonio on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding 20. He was later found dead in his car.
Kelley used an assault rifle for the attack. Investigators also found 2 handguns in his car. The firearms were purchased in 2014 or later.
In 2012, Kelley was found guilty of domestic violence by court martial, and dismissed from the force. The ruling barred him from buying firearms.
The Air Force says it is investigating details of its mishandling of the suspect's criminal data.
Police indicate that Kelley may have been motivated by domestic problems.

Iran has denied involvement in the firing of a ballistic missile toward the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh on Saturday.
The denial came in response to Saudi accusations that Iran has been providing weapons to militants in Yemen.
Iran released a statement on Monday criticizing Saudi Arabia for its military intervention in Yemen's civil war through its support of the country's government.
Civilian casualties have been rising in Yemen, as Saudi-led coalition forces continue airstrikes in militia-controlled areas.
The launch of the ballistic missile toward Riyadh is believed to have been a retaliatory move by the militants.
Saudi Arabia is expected to step up military operations in Yemen after the targeting of its capital. Concern is mounting that the turmoil in Yemen could worsen.

The Japanese government will strengthen its crackdown on gold smuggling by sharply raising fines under new measures.
People bringing gold into Japan are required to pay a consumption tax at customs. After the tax was raised 3 years ago from 5% to 8%, bullion smuggling surged. It has increased by 3.6 times since 2014.
The government plans to revise the Consumption Tax Act to allow higher fines on gold smugglers.
Under the proposal, anyone dodging 8,700 dollars or more in tax could be fined up to10 times that amount.
The government is also looking to tighten the customs law to impose heftier fines.
It hopes to include these changes in its tax system reforms for fiscal 2018.

Toyota Motor has announced its earnings results for the April-to-September period. Executives say sales were up, but operating profit was slightly down.
They say sales during the first half of this fiscal year were about 125 billion dollars. That's up 8.6 percent in yen terms from the previous year.
Operating profit fell 1.8 percent to about 9.6 billion dollars. A Toyota executive says cost-cutting efforts and the yen's decline in value had some positive effects. But he says marketing costs and operating expenses dragged down profit.
The company is upbeat about the whole business year through March. Toyota expects sales will rise 3.3 percent and operating profit to increase 0.3 percent.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the benchmark Nikkei Average ended Tuesday's trading at its highest level in almost 26 years.
Tuesday began with a spate of purchases following the record Dow surge in New York on Monday. The Nikkei index temporarily gained more than 400 points.
The Nikkei finished the day at 22,937, up 389 points from Monday's close and the highest since January 1992. The broader TOPIX index was up 20 points to 1,813.
Market watchers say investors, mostly from overseas, bought shares on the view that business at Japanese companies will remain steady, judging from mid-term earnings reports.
Some investors sold to lock-in profits, but their shares were quickly snapped up by others, which further lifted prices.
