A magnitude-7.3 earthquake that struck western Iran near its border with Iraq on Sunday has killed more than 350 people.
The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred at around 9:50 PM local time. The tremor was reportedly felt in vast areas of the region, including Turkey and Kuwait.
Iran's state broadcaster said 348 people died in the country. Iraqi media reported 7 deaths in Iraq. Reports put the number of injured in the region at more than 6,500 people.
The earthquake was centered in a mountainous area of Iran's western Kermanshah province.
Iranian officials say a large number of houses have collapsed, and people are trapped under rubble.
The quake has caused landslides, cutting off roads near the epicenter and hampering rescue efforts.
The Iranian government says 70,000 people are expected to lose their homes and be forced to live in shelters.
Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has instructed authorities to do their utmost to help people in the affected areas.
In Iraq, many buildings and houses have reportedly collapsed in areas surrounding the eastern city of Sulaimaniyah, affecting some hospitals.

Japanese experts on seismology say the magnitude-7.3 earthquake that struck along the Iran-Iraq border on Sunday occurred in a "collision zone" of 2 tectonic plates.
Yoshimori Honkura, Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology, says the quake took place in an area where the Arabian and Eurasian plates push against each other.
Honkura says past collisions of the 2 plates have formed numerous peaks, including the Zagros Mountains.
He adds that many active faults have been found in the region, and Sunday's jolt may be the result of a thrust fault.
Honkura says the quake hit a part of the world that is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes, as many structures are built with adobe bricks.
He warns that more tremors may cause landslides because there are many steep mountain slopes in the area.

The leaders of Japan, the United States and Australia have reaffirmed their close cooperation in putting pressure on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, US President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull met in Manila on Monday on the sidelines of ASEAN-related summit meetings.
In the first meeting of the 3 nations' leaders since 2014, Abe stressed that North Korea is an urgent issue.
He said it is very important for regional peace and stability that the 3 countries with similar values and strategic interests continue to work closely together.
The leaders agreed that they need to maximize pressure on North Korea through all possible means, including the full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Later in the day, Abe and Turnbull held a bilateral meeting.
They agreed they will work together to bring the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement into effect.
Eleven countries, including Japan and Australia, recently reached a broad agreement on the trade pact. The Trump administration pulled out of the deal earlier this year.

US President Donald Trump and his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte have remarked on the improving relations between their countries.
The 2 leaders met in Manila on Monday on the sidelines of a series of summit meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
At the beginning of their talks, Trump told Duterte that they have had a great relationship, and thanked him and the Philippine people for the well-organized ASEAN meetings.
Duterte replied that he wants to exchange views on issues that concern the 2 countries.
The US and the Philippines have recently been at odds.
Former US President Barack Obama criticized Duterte's strong-arm crackdown on illegal drugs as a violation of human rights, leading to the cancelation of a summit meeting.
But Trump and Duterte plan to cooperate on North Korea and in addressing armed groups in the Philippines that support the Islamic State militant group.
White House officials had expressed their intention to accelerate the improvement of ties with the Philippines, as the country is strategically important in terms of coping with China's increasing maritime activities in the South China Sea.

The South Korean military says a North Korean soldier defected to the South on Monday in Panmunjom, a village in the demilitarized zone between the 2 Koreas.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff says the male soldier fled a North Korean guard post to a South Korean facility called Freedom House.
The military also says the man was shot by the North Korean side, and is being treated at a hospital.
It adds that it raised the alert level against the North after the defection.
The village is jointly managed by the 2 Koreas and the United Nations command.
Inter-Korean summit talks are sometimes held there. Guided tours are available from Seoul and Pyongyang.
The demilitarized zone runs across the Korean Peninsula from west to east. Most parts are in the mountains and heavily mined.
North Korean soldiers have crossed the minefields to get to South Korea.
But defections are rare in heavily guarded Panmunjom.
There have been only 2 such cases until now -- one in 1998 and the other in 2007.

Industry sources say Japanese IT giant Softbank Group has struck a deal to acquire a stake in the ride-hailing service provider Uber.
They say Softbank is considering the purchase of about 10 billion dollars' worth of Uber stock from existing investors and acquiring a stake of just over 10 percent. The two firms have yet to work out the details.
The San Francisco-based Uber has confirmed the deal and said it believes this agreement is a strong vote of confidence in Uber's long-term potential.
It also said the agreement will help fuel the company's investment in technology and its continued expansion at home and abroad.
Softbank has also put money into other ride-hailing firms, including Didi Chuxing in China, Grab in Southeast Asia, and Ola in India.

Japan's space agency says it will try again next month to launch its smallest rocket that uses commercial parts. Its first launch in January failed.
The solid-fuel launch vehicle is just 9 and a half meters long. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, developed it in an effort to cut the cost of placing microsatellites into orbit.
The agency says the mini-rocket carrying a microsatellite will lift off on December 25th from the Uchinoura Space Center in southwestern Japan.
In January's failed flight, the rocket stopped transmitting data only 20 seconds after the launch. The flight was aborted and the rocket fell into nearby waters.
As a way to keep its price down, the rocket uses many commercial parts. JAXA officials say they have improved ways to protect electric cables and other parts.
Global demand for microsatellites is growing as their performance improves. Officials say the cost of launching a mini-rocket with a microsatellite is about 3.5 million dollars. That's a small fraction of the cost of launching the agency's other satellites.
