The White House national security adviser has said that the US administration will take some more time to determine whether its pressure on North Korea is working.
H.R. McMaster spoke to NHK on Thursday about how to deal with North Korea, which is accelerating its nuclear and missile programs.
McMaster said the US is aiming to isolate North Korea diplomatically and economically by implementing UN Security Council sanctions resolutions and other measures.
He revealed plans by President Donald Trump to directly call for cooperation on the issue during his tour of Asia next week.
McMaster said the US is urging other governments to put pressure on North Korea to convince its leadership of the need for denuclearization. But he added that it will take a certain period of time to verify how much these efforts are working. He added that the US will carefully consider what they can do after verifying current tactics.
McMaster referred to remarks by President Trump on North Korea. Trump said on Sunday that his Secretary of State is "wasting his time" trying to negotiate with Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programs.
McMaster said that doesn't mean the US has shut the door to dialogue. But he also stressed that there is not much time left to resolve the North Korean issue.
He said the US cannot afford time-consuming diplomatic negotiations, which North Korea uses as camouflage to continue its missile development.

A senior official of North Korea's governing Workers' Party has justified its nuclear and missile programs ahead of US President Donald Trump's tour of Asia next week.
Kim Su Gil led a North Korean delegation that attended a ceremony to commemorate the centenary of Russia's October Revolution in the country's second largest city on Thursday.
Kim, chairman of the party's Pyongyang City Committee, gave a speech during the event in St. Petersburg. He said powerful forces are needed to thwart invasions and military provocations by the US.
He said the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula proves that North Korea's nuclear weapons are a strong deterrent against invasions and ploys of the US and its followers.
Also, North Korea issued a spokesperson's statement of an anti-US organization through its state-run media on Thursday.
The statement warns that the US administration must listen to opposition at home and abroad to its military option against North Korea. It adds that holding on to the "military gamble" will be self-destructive.
Trump will arrive in Japan on Sunday to begin his tour of Asia.

US President Donald Trump's eldest daughter and presidential advisor Ivanka Trump has stressed the need for women's advancement in male-dominated sectors.
Ivanka Trump spoke at the World Assembly for Women conference in Tokyo on Friday.
She said "The economic empowerment of women has been a focus of mine for many years. Ensuring that 50 percent of our population can fully participate in the workforce is critical to strengthening our communities and growing our prosperity."
She said she joined the Trump administration to create a society in which women play a bigger role.
She expressed concern at the lack of women in sectors related to the "Fourth Industrial Revolution", which integrates artificial intelligence, social media and other cutting-edge technology into society.
Trump said, "We must create equal participation in these traditionally male-dominated sectors of our economy, which are fast growing and most lucrative industries in the world."
She went on to say that "countries like the United States and Japan cannot be complacent. We must continue to champion reforms in our own countries while also empowering women in restricted economies."
Ivanka Trump is scheduled to return to the US on Saturday after having dinner with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday.

The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's deadly truck rampage in New York City.
The militant group printed a statement in its Al-Naba newspaper on Thursday saying the attacker is one of its soldiers.
The statement says the increasing acts of terrorism in the United States and Europe are in response to calls for attacks on allies of the US-led coalition that is fighting the militant group.
The statement added the truck rampage took place near one of the sites of the 2001 terrorist attacks in the US. The group is apparently aiming to stir up public fear by associating the truck attack with the tragedy that took lives of nearly 3,000 people.
Eight people were killed and 12 others injured when the driver of a truck drove down a bike lane in Manhattan.
Federal prosecutors filed terrorism charges against the 29-year-old Uzbek immigrant, Sayfullo Saipov.
The prosecutors quote Saipov as saying he was inspired by videos of Islamic State militants and began planning the attack.
Investigators say a mobile phone found in the vehicle contains video clips showing members of the militant group killing people.
But it is not known whether the suspect had direct relations with the group.

Police in Tokyo say the suspect in an apparent serial murder case has told them that he bought cat litter and a cooler box for storing body parts each time he killed someone.
Police on Tuesday arrested Takahiro Shiraishi on suspicion of abandoning a corpse after finding 9 bodies in his apartment in Zama City, southwest of Tokyo.
Police say the 27-year-old unemployed man has admitted to killing the 9.
Police add the victims' bodies were mutilated and that some of their body parts were placed in cooler boxes and other containers. They say the boxes also contained cat litter, which is normally used to remove the smell of urine.
Police quoted Shiraishi as saying he discarded the mobile phones and wallets of the 9 victims as household garbage.
Police suspect that he tried to conceal the killings and destroy evidence.
