US President Donald Trump has revealed that Singapore and Panmunjom are among the possible sites for his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump suggested that he may meet with Kim at the Peace House or Freedom House in Panmunjom, where last week's inter-Korean summit took place.

He also said he is considering other countries, including Singapore.

Referring to the idea of holding the summit in Panmunjom, Trump said that "if things work out, there's a great celebration to be had on the site, not in a third-party country."

He said his country "has never been closer to potentially having something happen with respect to the Korean Peninsula that can get rid of the nuclear weapons."

He said he believes the summit is going to take place and will be a success.

Trump praised Kim for announcing the closing of a nuclear test site in North Korea, saying that Kim has been "very open and very straightforward."

US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have discussed a plan to hold the first-ever US-North Korea summit in the border truce village of Panmunjom.

A senior official from South Korea's presidential office said on Tuesday that Trump and Moon had exchanged views on the location of the summit during a phone call on Saturday.

Trump hinted on Monday that along with Singapore, the South Korean side of Panmunjom was among possible sites for the summit. He said: "If things work out, there's a great celebration to be had on the site, not in a third-party country."

The South Korean official said that holding the summit in Panmunjom, which is a symbol of divided Korea, would be a meaningful step towards establishing a new milestone for peace, although he denied that Moon proposed the plan.

Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held their first summit meeting in the village last Friday.

Japan's UN ambassador says UN sanctions on North Korea should not be eased until Pyongyang takes concrete action to eliminate its nuclear arms and missiles.

Koro Bessho told reporters in New York on Monday that for now there will be no changes to sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, as North Korea has yet to take any action.

Bessho said Japan will consider what to do if and when the situation begins to move forward with the North taking concrete steps.

The Japanese envoy also expressed deep concern over deadly clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian protesters. He said it's important that the Palestinian people have hope for the future.

Bessho said Israel and Jordan should work together in an industrial park in the West Bank that processes farm products. It was built with Japanese assistance.

He said Japan hopes to help Palestine achieve sustainable growth, as well as promoting confidence-building measures in the region.

Both North and South Korea have begun removing propaganda loudspeakers from near their border, in line with the joint summit declaration made last Friday.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to make efforts to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

They declared that all hostile acts, including propaganda broadcasts and leaflet drops, would be stopped and related equipment removed starting May 1st.

The South Korean military on Tuesday afternoon began dismantling loudspeakers installed near the demarcation line.

Military officials say North Korean soldiers are engaged in similar activity at several places across the border.

The South Korean military suspended propaganda broadcasts on April 23rd, before the inter-Korean summit.

This prompted the North Korean military to stop its broadcasts too.

Families of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea are in the United States asking for help toward achieving the return of their loved ones ahead of the first-ever US-North Korea summit.

The family members include Takuya Yokota, a younger brother of Megumi Yokota, who was abducted in 1977 when she was a first-year junior high school student.

Yokota met the US State Department's official in charge of Japanese affairs, Julie Chung. He called for the US to help, noting that there's not much time left for the aging relatives of the abductees, as around 40 years have passed since the abductions.

Chung said the US is aware of the issue, and offered to cooperate in securing the return of all the abductees.

After the meeting, Yokota said that ahead of the expected US-North Korea summit, he hopes to meet as many US government officials as possible to tell the families' story and to call for help.

The group will meet other government officials and attend a UN symposium in New York before leaving for Japan on Saturday.

A regional bank owned mainly by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, ShinGinko Tokyo, has begun operations under a new name after merging with 2 other banks.

ShinGinko Tokyo merged with the Tokyo Tomin Bank and the Yachiyo Bank, both based in the capital.

The new bank, Kiraboshi Bank, began operations on Tuesday.

It has total assets of 5.6 trillion yen, or about 51.2 billion dollars, and operates 164 branches, mainly in Tokyo.

Kiraboshi Bank plans to streamline its operations and cut its workforce by about 20 percent from the current 3,100 by fiscal 2022. It aims to focus on advisory businesses for small- and mid-sized companies.

ShinGinko Tokyo opened in 2005 with about 80 percent of its shares held by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Shintaro Ishihara, who was then Tokyo Governor, established the bank to help small businesses that were struggling to borrow from major banks.

The Tokyo government injected public funds into ShinGinko Tokyo in 2008 after the bank ran into financial difficulties due to mismanagement.

The new Kiraboshi Bank suffered some system failures on its first day of its business. The bank said some transactions could not be conducted on the ATMs of the former Yachiyo Bank.

Japan's annual summertime "Cool Biz" campaign has started, with people across the country encouraged to dress casually to use less air conditioning.

During the 5-month campaign, the Environment Ministry is urging people to set air conditioners to around 28 degrees Celsius at work and home.

Summer-like weather prevailed in most parts of Japan on Tuesday.

Many men were wearing casual clothes without ties when they arrived at government offices in the Kasumigaseki district in Tokyo in the morning.

At the Environment Ministry, people wore Okinawan open-neck shirts and used fans. A man wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sneakers said he felt cool and comfortable.

The ministry is also running a "Cool Share" campaign, encouraging people to share air-conditioned rooms rather than cool individual ones.

A ministry official in charge of the campaign, Toshihiro Hayashi, suggested that people can help reduce greenhouse emissions by reviewing their lifestyles. He said he hopes people change their ways at work and home.

Japan's government aims to cut household greenhouse gas emissions by around 40 percent from 2013 levels by 2030.
