Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the country aims to work closely with China in responding to growing demand for infrastructure in Asian countries.

Abe was speaking on Thursday at a welcome party for Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at a Tokyo hotel, hosted by Japanese business organizations. Li was visiting Japan for the first time since taking office in 2013.

Abe said he agreed with Li during their talks the previous day to set up a forum for bringing together the 2 nations' public and private sectors with the aim of responding to the huge demand for infrastructure in Asia.

Abe said he believes both countries stand to gain more from cooperating with each other than competing for overseas infrastructure projects.
Li called for active participation by Japanese firms in China's Belt and Road economic initiative, which covers Asia, Africa and Europe. He said China wants to deepen pragmatic cooperation with Japan so the 2 countries' development strategies can be linked effectively.

Li also said he believes China and Japan can complement each other in technological innovation.

He added that he wants to promote bilateral financial cooperation and ways to increase private-sector investment opportunities between them.

Li expressed hope to visit Japan again fairly soon and spend more time in the country, and said he has invited Abe to China.

Li added that frequent reciprocal visits by the 2 nations' leaders will help deepen bilateral economic ties.

Japan's Emperor Akihito has met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who's visiting the country for the first time since taking office.

The meeting took place at the Imperial Palace on Thursday morning.

The Imperial Household Agency says Li expressed hope that his visit to Japan on the 40th anniversary of a bilateral peace and friendship treaty will lead to long-term, stable development of the 2 countries' ties.

The emperor responded that he hopes to see their friendly relations enhanced. He referred to his 1992 visit to China with Empress Michiko, saying he fondly remembers being warmly welcomed there.

Li said the couple's friendly exchanges with ordinary people made a strong impression among Chinese as symbolizing the 2 countries' friendship.

During their 20-minute meeting, the Emperor also thanked Li for China's decision to give Japan 2 crested ibises for a breeding program.

Li is the first Chinese premier in 8 years to meet the emperor. Premier Wen Jiabao met him in Japan in 2010.

US President Donald Trump has welcomed home 3 American detainees released by North Korea.

An airplane carrying the 3 Korean-Americans landed at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington early on Thursday local time.

The President and First Lady Melania Trump boarded the plane to welcome the returnees, and appeared with the 3 men at the top of the plane's stairway. The three waved and gave "V" signs to the media.

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo greeted the former detainees on the tarmac.

Trump told reporters that it's a special night for the three. He thanked North Korean leader Kim Jong UN for releasing them.

He said that it was a very important thing for all Americans to be able to get the 3 great people out, and that a lot of very good things will happen.

Trump also said that his proudest achievement will be when the US government denuclearizes the entire Korean Peninsula.

The 3 Korean-Americans left the air force base for a nearby hospital to receive a medical checkup.

North Korea released the detainees on Wednesday after Pompeo met the country's leader Kim Jong Un for the 2nd time in less than 2 months.

Pompeo is believed to have discussed the upcoming summit between Trump and Kim. But details of the meeting have not been disclosed.

Also on Wednesday, Trump said the date and venue for the summit will be announced within 3 days.

But he said it will not be held at the demilitarized zone between the 2 Koreas, a place he previously showed interest in as a possible location.

Some observers are saying that Singapore is the most likely venue.

He said Japan will do all it can, in cooperation with the United States and trilateral collaboration with the US and South Korea, or working together with China to resolve the abductions issue.

Foreign Minister Taro Kono has reiterated Japan's support for the Iran nuclear agreement.

Kono talked with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif by phone for about 30 minutes on Thursday.

He told Zarif that Japan will continue to support the Iran nuclear deal. He said it is important that Iran and the other parties continue to enforce the agreement.

Zarif explained Iran's stance on the US decision to withdraw from the accord.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that Iran will remain in the agreement without the US.

Rouhani also said that Iran plans to hold talks with the other parties to the deal.

However, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei indicated on Wednesday that Iran may leave the nuclear deal if its national interests are not guaranteed in the upcoming talks with the European parties. He said he does not trust European countries either, and if there's no guarantee of Iran's interests, the deal cannot continue.

The 5 permanent UN Security Council members, Germany and the European Union reached the agreement with Iran in 2015.

A former secretary to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who is linked to a government favoritism scandal has testified in the Diet.

Tadao Yanase was summoned as an unsworn witness on Thursday to answer questions about government approval of a new veterinary school in Imabari city in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan. The school is operated by Kake Educational Institution, which is run by a close friend of Abe.

An official from Ehime Prefecture, who accompanied representatives from Kake to the prime minister's office in April 2015, has created a document purportedly describing their meeting with Yanase.

Yanase on Thursday admitted to meeting Kake representatives around April 2015. He said he does not recall meeting officials from Imabari city or Ehime Prefecture, but that they may have been among the group of nearly 10 people that he met.

Yanase denied describing the veterinary school project as a matter related to the prime minister, as the Ehime document says he did.

He recalled that he said the prime minister was eager to open a veterinary school, but did not specify the Imabari project as a prime ministerial matter.

Yanase said he received no instructions from Abe regarding the Kake project, and he did not report the meeting to Abe.

He said he knew Abe and Kake's director were friends, but denied giving the project preferential treatment.

Executives at Japanese electronics maker Casio say they're pulling out of the digital camera business.
The industry has been shaken up by smartphones.

Casio launched its digital camera unit in 1995, releasing the first-ever model with an LCD screen on the back. The product was a huge hit that helped to trigger a boom in digital camera sales.

But the market has been declining with the growing popularity of camera-equipped smartphones. Casio's digital camera business has posted losses for the past 2 years, with shipments falling to one-tenth of their peak.

Casio officials say they concluded that the business would not be able to return to profitability.
