The White House has called for more international pressure on Tehran as military tensions between Iran and Israel intensify.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders issued a statement on Friday, following Israel's air strikes on Iranian targets in Syria the previous day.

Israel says the attacks were retaliation for rockets fired into the Golan Heights by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps, deployed in Syria.

Sanders said in the statement that Iran's action proves that "the Iranian regime's reckless actions pose a severe threat to regional peace and security."

The statement said "it is time for responsible nations to bring pressure on Iran to change this dangerous behavior."

The United States announced its exit from the nuclear deal with Iran earlier this week. It intends to maximize pressure on Iran to bring the country to the negotiating table and strike a new nuclear agreement.

US President Donald Trump spoke over the phone with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday.

The Prime Minister's Office in London says May told Trump that Britain and European partners remain firmly committed to ensuring the Iran nuclear deal is upheld.

The Iranian foreign minister plans to meet with 3 of his European counterparts next week to discuss the Iran nuclear deal.

A senior Iranian government official told NHK on Friday that the foreign ministers of Iran, France, Britain, and Germany will hold talks in Brussels next Tuesday.
The 3 European countries are signatories to the deal.

The official said the ministers will talk about how to maintain the nuclear agreement in light of US President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of it.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stated that he intends to uphold the deal. He has said that Iran should receive the economic benefits promised in the accord, even if the US reinstates economic sanctions against the country.
France and Germany also intend to stick to the agreement. The 2 countries want to discuss possible restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile development program.

Iranian media outlets say Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will visit Russia and China before Tuesday's meeting. The two countries are also signatories to the deal.

Iran apparently wants to shore up support from Russia. Moscow has close ties to Tehran.

Japan's government has begun arrangements for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump to meet on the sidelines of the Group of 7 summit in Canada next month. The G7 summit is scheduled for June 8th and 9th.

Abe said on Friday that he will be in close contact with Trump in the run-up to the US-North Korea summit.

Trump announced on Thursday that he will meet with Kim Jong Un on June 12th in Singapore.

Japanese officials say the talks between Abe and Trump are aimed at coordinating policies toward North Korea's complete denuclearization and the swift resolution of the North's abductions of Japanese nationals.

Japan's government says sanctions on North Korea should be maintained until Pyongyang takes concrete steps toward denuclearization.

Government officials also say past talks with the North did not lead to its denuclearization because of bad timing for rewards.

A senior Japanese foreign ministry official says the US-North Korea summit is not an end but a beginning.

The government plans to continue talks with relevant countries after the US-North Korea summit to realize the North's denuclearization and quickly resolve the abduction issue.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity if it takes bold action to quickly denuclearize.

Pompeo made the remarks at a joint news conference with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha in Washington on Friday.

The top US diplomat said he had "substantive" talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday during his second visit to the North.

He said he thinks he and Kim had a pretty good understanding between their countries about what the shared objectives of the upcoming US-North Korea summit are.

Pompeo stressed the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula would require a "robust verification" program by the US and other countries.

He said he had tried to persuade Kim to denuclearize by explaining that historically the US had often become close partners with its former adversaries.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been prevented from leaving the country in the face of an investigation for alleged corruption.

Malaysia's immigration authority announced on Saturday that Najib and his wife have been "blacklisted from leaving the country". It came as the couple were reportedly preparing to fly to Indonesia.

The travel ban comes after Najib's ruling coalition lost in the Lower House election earlier this week to an opposition alliance led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

There have been concerns that Najib may try to flee the country to avoid possible prosecution for his role in a money scandal.

He is alleged to have received about 700 million dollars through his personal bank account from a Malaysian state fund 3 years ago.

People gathered at an airport in protest after Najib said on his Facebook page that he and his family were going overseas.

One of the protesters said that Najib should not be allowed to leave Malaysia before he is tried in court.

Najib never appeared at the airport. He said that he would respect the authority's decision and stay in the country.

The Russian presidential office has announced that President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will hold talks in Moscow on May 26th.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov revealed this on Friday. He also said Abe will attend an international economy forum in St. Petersburg a day before the summit meeting.

The 2 leaders are expected to discuss joint economic activities on 4 Russian-held islands, which are claimed by Japan.

They will likely talk about ways to materialize 5 priority projects including seafood farming and greenhouse vegetable cultivation.

The expected agenda will also include humanitarian measures such as allowing former Japanese islanders to take flights to visit the graves of their ancestors on the islands.

The Japanese government maintains the 4 islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

Ushakov also said Putin will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in St. Petersburg on May 24th.

They are expected to exchange views about the Iran nuclear deal and the situation in Syria.

Putin was sworn in for a fourth term earlier this month.

The US space agency NASA says it plans to send a small, helicopter-like autonomous rotorcraft to Mars in 2020.

NASA announced the plan on Friday to launch a rover carrying the Mars Helicopter in July, 2020.

The helicopter is expected to begin test flights for the first time outside Earth as soon as it lands on the Red Planet in February 2021.

The Mars Helicopter has a fuselage about the size of a softball and solar cells to charge its batteries. It weighs about 1.8 kilograms.

Its blades rotate about 10 times faster than the rate of a helicopter on Earth to get lift force in the thin Martian atmosphere which is only one percent that of Earth.

The mission is aimed at demonstrating the viability and potential of the vehicle on Mars.

A NASA official says that if it does work, the helicopter may help access locations not reachable by a rover.

A performance of traditional Japanese horseback archery, known as "yabusame," has thrilled a crowd in Turkey.

Yabusame is a form of ritual designed to seek peace and bountiful harvests. The practice dates back to ancient times.

A group of about 20 archers from Japan is taking part in a sports event in Istanbul that began on Wednesday.

The archers wore traditional costumes as they rode horses and shot at targets, drawing cheers from spectators with each successful shot.

A Turkish man said the yabusame performance made him like Japan even more.

The Japanese archers say they had limited time to train local horses for the event.
