The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the island of Hawaii on Friday. Local media says the tremor caused landslides and cut power to around 1400 households.

The quake occurred at 12:32 PM at a depth of 5 kilometers. The USGS says there has been elevated seismic activity around the nearby Kilauea volcano over the past month. It counted 11 quakes since Thursday of a magnitude 4 or over.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii observed changes in sea levels between 15 and 40 centimeters at 3 points around Hawaii island.

The Kilauea volcano is in the southern part of the island. An eruption accompanied by gushing lava started there on Thursday. Authorities ordered about 1700 locals to evacuate. Caution is advised against continued volcanic activity.

Kazuhiro Ishihara, an expert in seismology and a professor emeritus at Japan's Kyoto University, says the quake struck in an area that has seen other large-scale seismic events.

He says past quakes occurred due to movements of magma below the volcano and that the action has increased pressure on bedrock. Ishihara suspects Friday's quake occurred through a similar mechanism.

The White House says President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will meet in Washington on May 22nd ahead of the prospective US-North Korea summit.

White House officials said in a statement on Friday that the third summit between the 2 leaders will affirm the strength of the US-South Korea alliance. They said Trump and Moon will continue their close coordination on developments regarding the Korean Peninsula in the wake of the April 27th inter-Korean summit.

They said the leaders will also discuss Trump's upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The US president earlier said the date and place for his meeting with Kim had been set and promised to announce the details soon.

The venues under consideration included Singapore and the truce village of Panmunjom, where the inter-Korean summit took place.

The top national security advisers of Japan and the United States have reaffirmed that they will cooperate in their efforts to get North Korea to completely dispose of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.

Shotaro Yachi, the head of Japan's National Security Secretariat, met US national security advisor John Bolton at the White House on Friday. The meeting came ahead of the planned summit between the United States and North Korea.

The officials agreed that their countries will work together closely to achieve the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of the North's weapons of mass destruction, including its biological and chemical arms. Their targets also include ballistic missiles of all ranges.

Yachi and Bolton also reportedly confirmed cooperation in resolving the issue of abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea.

The families of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea have wrapped up their visit to the United States, during which they called for US help to secure the return of their loved ones.

The families met senior US government officials and the family of an American college student who died soon after his release from more than a year of captivity in North Korea.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Takuya Yokota, whose sister Megumi was abducted at the age of 13, expressed his gratitude for the support offered by key US officials.

Yokota said that what the families want from North Korea is not so-called hostage diplomacy but the return of all abduction victims. He urged the North to make progress on the abduction issue.
Koichiro Iizuka was one year old when his mother Yaeko Taguchi was abducted by North Korea.

Iizuka said that when it comes to North Korea, people tend to focus on the nuclear issue, but he believes the families' visit has helped draw more attention to the abduction issue.

He said that the families have received positive comments from the US side, and that they will be closely watching to see what happens next.

Yokota said that the ultimate responsibility for the abduction issue rests on the Japanese government, not the US administration.

He called on the Japanese government to keep demanding the return of all abductees.

North Korea's state-run media has reported that the country returned to the same time zone as South Korea on Saturday, ending its own "Pyongyang Time."

The Korean Central News Agency reported early on Saturday that the standard times of the 2 Koreas have been reunified.

The media said the move is the first practical step for national reconciliation and unity between the 2 Koreas since the inter-Korean summit late last month.

The North created the "Pyongyang Time" in August 2015, setting its clocks 30 minutes behind South Korea and Japan to mark the 70th anniversary of liberation from Japan's colonial rule.

During the inter-Korean summit, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed his intention to synchronize his country's time zone with Seoul.

He told South Korean President Moon Jae-in that his heart ached when he saw 2 clocks on a wall at the meeting venue showing the time differences between Pyongyang and Seoul.

Following the summit, North Korea's parliament approved a decree to set its clocks forward by half an hour, which took effect on Saturday.

United Nations' aviation officials are considering a North Korean request to open new air routes to the South.

The International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, said in a statement on Friday that its officials will visit Pyongyang next week to discuss the matter along with navigation and safety issues.

North Korea has reportedly asked to establish new routes between Pyongyang in the North and Incheon in the South, near the capital Seoul.

The proposal was made in February, when inter-Korean relations started to show signs of improvement. The change happened as North Korea sent high-level delegations to the South for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

ICAO officials say the North recently agreed to the visit by the agency.

The officials say they have conveyed the North's request to South Korea's aviation authorities, who are considering it.

In October last year, ICAO member states issued a unanimous condemnation of the North for threatening aviation safety with repeated launches of ballistic missiles.

In considering the latest request from Pyongyang, the agency plans to ask North Korea how it will assure safety on international air routes.

A group of North Korean defectors in South Korea has been forced to give up its campaign to send anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border after a police intervention.

Dozens of activists, including North Korean defectors, gathered near a lookout in the South Korean border city of Paju at around noon on Saturday.

They began preparations to release balloons carrying about 150,000 leaflets that explain about the murder of the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at an international airport in Kuala Lumpur last year.

But police officers stopped a truck carrying the leaflets and balloons, forcing the activists to give up their plan.

North and South Korea agreed in a joint statement at the historic inter-Korean summit on April 27th that they will stop all hostile acts along the border, including the leaflet campaign.

North Korean defector-activists in the South are criticizing the South Korean government for restricting activities of civic groups.

The leader of the defectors' group said that the group had already released 150,000 leaflets early Thursday.

He called the inter-Korean summit a "backroom meeting between two hypocrites" which left behind the North's human rights issues.

Robots and smart devices are the face of some new hotels in Japan, where owners are using hi-tech ways to offer a friendly welcome to guests who don't speak the language.

A major travel agency opened a so-called smart hotel in April in Hamamatsucho, central Tokyo, where humanoid robots greet guests at the front desk in English, Chinese, Korean, or Japanese. Robots also perform cleaning duties.

Hotel officials say technology is helping to ease the strain of Japan's labor shortage.

At another hotel in Akihabara, central Tokyo, guests can control lighting, air conditioning and curtains with a smartphone or smart speaker.

The hotel says 80 percent of its visitors are from overseas. It's promoting itself as a technology-friendly place to stay, where guests can get by without any Japanese.

Hotels in Japan are increasingly turning to robots and technology known as the Internet of Things, as the number of foreign visitors rises.
