Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has told the Palestinian leader that Japan does not plan to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Abe met with President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank on Tuesday, while touring the Middle East.

He will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.

The United States recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital last December.

Abe told Abbas that Japan supports a 2-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, whereby Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist. He said his government is resolved to actively contribute to achieving peace in the region.

He said Japan will provide political and financial support for Palestinian statehood.

He also said the United States has a crucial role in achieving peace, and he urged Abbas to accept any offer of negotiations from Washington.

He said confidence-building is needed to resume dialogue. He said the Japan-led Corridor for Peace and Prosperity is aimed at supporting Palestine's economic independence.

Abe said he plans to extend this project to help develop logistics networks, and that Japan will provide food aid worth about 10 million dollars.

Abbas said Abe's offers give hope to the Palestinian people.

US President Donald Trump says the location and date for his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will probably be announced over the next couple of days.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday that the meeting is being set up right now.

He said on Monday that the venues under consideration include Singapore and the Peace House in Panmunjom, where the inter-Korean summit took place.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in recently suggested that Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump said it was very generous of Moon to make that statement. He said he wants to get peace, and he thinks it's going to work out.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has asked the United Nations to help verify the planned shutdown of North Korea's nuclear test site.

South Korea's presidential office says Moon made the request by phone to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday.

Moon explained that the North's leader Kim Jong Un promised at the recent inter-Korean summit to invite experts from the South and the United States, as well as journalists, to verify the closure.

Moon asked that the UN play a role in confirming the North's commitment to denuclearization.

He also called on the UN to monitor the implementation of a summit agreement to turn the demilitarized zone into a genuine peace belt.

Guterres reportedly said the requests need approval by the UN Security Council, but that he's willing to cooperate, as he hopes to help work for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stressed that Japan will work with the US, South Korea and Russia to persuade North Korea to take concrete actions for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Abe told a news conference in Jordan on Tuesday that Japan will comprehensively resolve the issues of the abductions, as well as the nuclear and missile threats, under the Japan-North Korea Pyongyang Declaration of 2002. He said that by settling the unfortunate past, it will become possible to normalize relations with the North.

Abe said that he would like to give credit to South Korean President Moon Jae-in for his efforts in the recent inter-Korean summit.

Abe said it is important to keep up the momentum to realize the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through concrete actions by the North.

He also said that he will hold a summit with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the South Korean president in Tokyo on May 9th. The trilateral meetings have been suspended since November 2015.

Abe said they will hold thorough discussions from various viewpoints for the development of Japan-China and Japan-South Korea relations.

China's foreign minister Wang Yi is in North Korea for talks with his counterpart there, Ri Yong Ho, on the recent inter-Korean summit.

Wang arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday on a chartered flight. He is expected to discuss the upcoming North Korean summit with the United States.

Ri accompanied North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the historic meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last week.

The two leaders agreed to seek talks with the United States and China to negotiate a formal end to the Korean War and change the armistice to a peace treaty.

China is a party to the armistice and is expected to show willingness to be involved in the negotiations.

Wang may also meet with Kim Jong Un.

A planned visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping is also likely to be a topic of discussion with North Korean officials. It would be Xi's first visit to the North since becoming leader.

International delegates to a preparatory meeting for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference have expressed a range of opinions on whether their countries should build more nuclear plants.

The meeting is underway in Geneva. Participants on Tuesday discussed the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

A Russian representative indicated the country's willingness to construct reactors and said the world has recovered from the psychological shock caused by the 2011 nuclear accident in Japan.

A Chinese official said nuclear power is an important option in the fight against global warming. China is pressing ahead with construction of nuclear plants.

A delegate from Germany referred to the risks of nuclear power, saying accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima had serious consequences.

A Japanese official said nuclear plants around the world must observe the highest levels of safety, using lessons learned from the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The World Health Organization says an estimated 7 million people die each year due to polluted air.

The WHO released its latest findings on Wednesday.

It has been measuring average annual levels of PM2.5 and other air pollutants in more than 4,300 cities worldwide.

It estimated that as a result of exposure to polluted air, around 7 million people per year die from such causes as lung cancer and heart disease.

It said more than 90 percent of air pollution-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, mainly in Asia and Africa.

It added that in 2016, household air pollution caused the deaths of an estimated 3.8 million people who used polluting fuels for cooking and heating.

It said indoor air pollution is a serious health risk for around 3 billion people, most of them women and children.

The WHO said air pollution does not recognize borders and stressed the need to promote development of renewable energies.

Japan's Fujifilm Holdings is likely to review its plan to buy the US firm Xerox Corp, after Xerox's CEO and most of its board stepped down.

The 2 companies agreed in January this year that Fujifilm would purchase Xerox Corp and merge it with its existing subsidiary Fuji Xerox. Fujifilm said the move was to increase competitiveness.

But major Xerox shareholders including Carl Icahn have opposed the deal, saying it undervalues Xerox.
Last Friday, a New York court temporarily blocked merger procedures.

Xerox announced on Tuesday it had reached a settlement with Icahn and other opposing shareholders.

The company said its CEO Jeff Jacobson and 6 other board members will step down and be replaced by officials backed by opposition shareholders.

Icahn said in a statement that with new leadership, Xerox will be much better positioned to take advantage of value-enhancing opportunities, including restructuring its relationship with Fujifilm.

Fujifilm has expressed serious concerns over the developments. In a statement, it described the purchase as the best available option, and one that would be of huge benefit to shareholders on both sides. It urged Xerox's new board members to implement the agreed plan.

Fujifilm says it will appeal last week's court decision to block the merger.
