North Korea's state-run media has not reported the location and date of the planned summit between leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.

Trump revealed in a tweet on Thursday that his meeting with Kim will be held on June 12th in Singapore.

North Korea's media has been silent on the matter. But Pyongyang has apparently agreed to the venue because the North has had an embassy in Singapore since the 2 countries established diplomatic relations in 1975.

North Korea has used the embassy as a base of its diplomatic and economic activity in Southeast Asia. Singapore also hosted US-North Korea talks in the past.

June 11th, the eve of the planned summit, falls on the 25th anniversary of the US-North Korea joint statement that was adopted following talks between the 2 countries in New York. The statement said for now North Korea will suspend its decision to pull out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

On Wednesday, Kim Jong Un met with visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Kim said "a satisfactory consensus" had been reached toward the summit.

He also said he expects his meeting with the US president to be a "historic encounter." Kim also freed 3 Americans detained by the North, apparently trying to underscore its positive posture toward trust-building with the US administration.

This week, Kim visited China for talks with President Xi Jinping, following their meeting in March.

Kim said in the meeting that there is no need for the North to be a nuclear state if the relevant parties abolish their hostile policies and remove the security threats against his country.

Since last month, North Korea has stressed its policy of focusing on rebuilding the economy.

Analysts say Pyongyang is hoping to proceed with the planned summit with favorable conditions for the country to prompt the US to ease sanctions.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has given a warm welcome to visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, as they work to improve bilateral relations.

Abe and Li on Friday attended a forum designed to promote exchanges between Japanese and Chinese local authorities. The event was held in Sapporo City in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido.

Abe said regional-level exchanges have kept the bond between the 2 countries alive regardless of the relations between the central governments.

Li said he made the official visit to Japan to return to the spirit of the bilateral friendship treaty and help bring the bilateral ties back to normal. He expressed his willingness to develop long-term and stable relations.

The 2 leaders then visited a subsidiary of Toyota Motor in Tomakomai City. They were welcomed by the automaker's president Akio Toyoda who showed them a fuel cell car that runs on hydrogen.

After that, Abe and Li had lunch at a tourist ranch in Eniwa City and had a walk outside.

Abe saw Li off at New Chitose Airport later in the afternoon.

This was Li's first visit to Japan since taking office. He is also the first Chinese leader to visit the country in 8 years.

A former coach of Japan's national soccer team has sent a letter to the Japan Football Association to request an explanation of the reasons for his dismissal.

Vahid Halilhodzic had his contract terminated on April 7th. JFA President Kohzo Tashima said that Halilhodzic had lost the trust of the players and was struggling to communicate with them.

Speaking to reporters last month in Tokyo, Halilhodzic dismissed the association's claims. He said he was the team's coach for 3 years and never had any problems working with them.

A lawyer for Halilhodzic said the letter was sent on Thursday after the association failed to respond to his client's request to explain the reasons and the process leading to the termination of his contract.
Depending on the association's response, the lawyer said Halilhodzic may file a lawsuit aimed at restoring his honor and seeking the truth.

The association told NHK that it is in the process of confirming the information and will not respond at present.

A leading international organization for a wine competition plans to hold its first contest for Japanese "sake" or rice wine in October.

The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles announced the plan on Friday in Beijing, where its annual competition is now being held.

The Belgium-based organization will launch a sake division and hold a "Sake Selection" event in Mie Prefecture in central Japan from October 11th.

An international panel of 35 professional tasters will judge about 700 bottles.

The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles turned its attention to sake after it was served at the 2016 Group of 7 summit in Ise-Shima in Mie Prefecture and received rave reviews.

The chairman of the Concours Mondial said sake has a unique history and that it will be an honor to deal with it.

Baudouin Havaux said he hopes the new contest will serve as a bridge to connect the Japanese drink with the world's markets.
