US President Donald Trump says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will get what he calls "very strong" protections if he agrees to denuclearize.

Trump spoke to reporters at the White House on Thursday.

North Korea recently indicated that Kim's upcoming summit with Trump may be called off if the US tries to demand unilateral nuclear disarmament.

Trump pointed out that his staff is still making arrangements for the planned summit.

He said, "If the meeting happens, it happens. And if it doesn't, we go on to the next step."

Trump noted that perhaps Kim does not want to hold a meeting. He suggested Kim's recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping may have had an effect on him.

On negotiations with North Korea, Trump said his administration is not at all considering the Libyan model of denuclearization.

He said there was no deal to keep Libyan leader Muammar al-Qadhafi in power after denuclearization.

Trump said the best thing Kim could ever do is to make a deal. He said he will "get protections that would be very strong."

North Korea's state-run media says the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, has attended a meeting of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Korean Workers' Party.
Kim reportedly did not make any hostile remarks about the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Friday's edition of the party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on its front page that Kim had attended an expanded meeting of the military commission.

According to the article, the meeting discussed and approved measures to further strengthen the military and to improve national defense.

Kim reportedly unveiled plans to modernize the military and improve the lives of its members.

At a plenary meeting of the party's Central Committee last month, North Korea declared that it had completed its nuclear weapons program. It said that its "byongjin" policy of advancing nuclear and economic development at the same time has been successful, and the country would now focus on restoring the economy.

North Korea hinted on Wednesday that it may cancel its summit with the United States scheduled for next month. But observers say this may be part of the maneuvering over the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

A former Japanese abductee who returned from North Korea 16 years ago says recent developments with the North offer the biggest chance to solve the abductions issue.

Yasushi Chimura and his wife Fukie were kidnapped by North Korean agents in Fukui Prefecture in 1978. They were returned to Japan after the 2002 Japan-North Korea summit in Pyongyang.

Chimura spoke at a meeting of supporters in Obama City in Fukui on Thursday.

He said there has been no progress in solving the abductions issue in the 16 years since his return. He expressed concern that people are becoming less and less aware of the issue.

Chimura warned that the North maintains that the abductions issue is already resolved. He said he wants help to settle the issue through a signature-collection campaign and other activities.

Chimura said it is the first time in 16 years that there have been such big moves concerning the situation with the North. He urged the Japanese government to take the initiative in solving the abduction issue by gaining the cooperation of the United States and South Korea.

Chimura also said he will start visiting elementary and junior high schools in Obama City next month to speak to students about the abductions by North Korea.

The government recognizes 17 Japanese citizens were abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s. Five of them returned in 2002. But 12 others remain unaccounted for.

Arab countries and territories have yet to take the joint action of recalling their envoys to the United States in response to the US transferring its Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the contested city of Jerusalem.

The Arab League held an emergency meeting of foreign ministers in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, to debate how to deal with the US move and the ensuing violence in the Palestinian Territory.

Dozens of Palestinians have been killed and many others injured in clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki called on the league members to recall their ambassadors to the US.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said the US embassy relocation runs counter to UN resolutions. Others also condemned the US, but none of the members said they would recall their ambassadors.

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said the league would set up a fact-finding committee on the latest conflict, but offered no details.

The lack of decisive action reflects the interests of the league members. Many depend financially and militarily on the US. Also, Saudi Arabia and others hostile to Iran are in favor of maintaining friendly ties with the US.

China says it is dropping an anti-dumping probe into imports of a US grain, a move seen as a goodwill concession to Washington amid efforts by the 2 countries to defuse trade frictions.

Imports of US sorghum to China started to surge in 2013. The grain is mainly used as an ingredient in liquor.

Beijing had said that shipments of the American crop posed a threat to local farmers, and last month it ordered importers of sorghum to pay hefty anti-dumping deposits to compensate for what it called unfairly low prices.

On Friday, the Commerce Department said it would halt the probe and reimburse the deposits. It said that higher sorghum prices would eventually impact on consumers.

The announcement came during a visit by Vice Premier Liu He to Washington to discuss ways to address the trade imbalance between the world's 2 biggest economies.

US President Donald Trump told Liu on Thursday that China should import more US farm products.

Leaders from Japan as well as 18 Pacific island nations and territories will open 2 days of talks in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, on Friday.

On the eve of the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono hosted a reception in Tokyo.

Kono said "As we, the islanders, understand benefits brought by a free and open ocean better than anyone else, we need to protect them hand in hand, pass them to the future generations, and achieve further prosperity." He added the meeting will facilitate this end.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to seek cooperation for the promotion of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy, which attaches importance to the rule of law and freedom of navigation.

Abe will also exchange opinions on disaster preparedness against rising sea levels being caused by climate change.

He will also seek agreement on maintaining pressure against North Korea and preventing it from evading sanctions through such means as offshore transfers of goods.

The leaders will issue a declaration giving the results of the meeting.

Major Japanese beverage maker Suntory says it's stopping shipments of two of its premium whiskies because stocks are running low.

Suntory officials say sales of the brands Hakushu 12 Years and Hibiki 17 Years will be suspended after stocks run out sometime between next month and September.

The popularity of Japanese whisky has surged in recent years after several brands won international awards.

Major manufacturers in the country have also been promoting whisky soda as a mainstay drink.

Domestic shipments of whisky have more than doubled over the past ten years.

The company has been increasing its production capacity recently but demand has turned out to be much greater than anticipated.
