Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and US President Donald Trump have agreed to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance. The two leaders spoke during their first phone call since Suga took office last week.

Suga talked with Trump for about 20 minutes on Sunday night. After the talks, Suga told reporters that President Trump assured him they would work together to further develop the Japan-US alliance.

Suga said he told Trump that their two nations' cooperation is the cornerstone of peace and stability in the region.

Suga said Trump told him to call anytime 24 hours a day if a contingency arises.

It was the new prime minister's first telephone conversation with President Trump since taking office on September 16.

The prime minister told reporters that he is willing to hold telephone talks with other world leaders to deepen bilateral relations.

World leaders will address the United Nations General Assembly from Tuesday. They will do so via video this year as a safety measure amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The assembly at UN headquarters in New York is to be held mainly online.

The representatives of 193 member states are scheduled to address via videos.

US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be among those who address on the first day.

Ahead of the opening of the assembly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the international community to come together to deal with the coronavirus and climate change.

This year, member states are expected to adopt a political statement confirming the need to promote international cooperation.

Attention is focused on what leaders will say in their speeches about global issues such as the US-China conflict, the new coronavirus and climate change.

Iran, Britain, France and Germany have rejected the US declaration that it has re-imposed UN sanctions on Tehran.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iran's ambassador to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi denounced the US move as invalid, legally baseless, and totally unacceptable.

Ravanchi pointed out that only parties to the 2015 nuclear agreement have the right to seek the reinstatement of UN sanctions. The UN has lifted most sanctions under the deal between world powers and Iran. But the US pulled out of the deal in May 2018.

Ravanchi added that any current or future US moves to explore the re-imposition of UN sanctions are therefore invalid.

He added that Iran believes other countries will reject US attempts to abuse UN Security Council procedures and undermine its authority.

Britain, France and Germany are parties to the nuclear agreement. Their top diplomats issued a statement on Sunday, noting the US "ceased to be a participant" to the deal, following its withdrawal.

The statement says the US notification to the UN Security Council last month that it had begun the process of restoring sanctions would have no legal effect.

The statement says "any decisions and actions which would be taken based on this procedure or on its possible outcome would also be incapable of having any legal effect."
The statement adds that Britain, France and Germany "have worked tirelessly to preserve the nuclear agreement and remain committed to do so."

A US court has temporarily blocked the Trump administration's ban on downloads and other functions of the Chinese-owned social media app WeChat.

The administration had announced it would curtail the use of the multi-purpose app in the United States from Sunday. It claimed the Chinese government could misuse customer data compiled by the app.

US WeChat users filed a motion against the ban with a federal court in San Francisco.

In issuing the preliminary injunction on Saturday, the court said WeChat is effectively the only means of communication for many users in Chinese-speaking and Chinese-American communities.

It said there are no viable substitute platforms or apps available.

The Trump administration had also intended to ban the downloading and updating of another Chinese-owned app, TikTok, from Sunday.

But it delayed the restrictions by one week after progress was seen in negotiating a partnership deal between the app's Chinese owner, ByteDance, and interested US firms.

China has unveiled a renovated museum dedicated to the Korean War, which began in 1950.

China opened the memorial hall to the general public on Sunday, as it prepares to mark 70 years next month since sending troops to fight UN forces in Korea led by the US.

About six years were spent renovating the facility in Dandong in the northeastern province of Liaoning on the border with North Korea.

Changes to the floor plan have increased the exhibition space by five times. More than 1,600 items are on display, including a letter written by then North Korean leader Kim Il Sung asking China to join the fight.

Tanks and fighter planes are also on display.

The entrance to an exhibition hall is adorned with the words of President Xi Jinping to the effect that China and North Korea share a close relationship bonded by blood.

Analysts say China is highlighting its deep ties with North Korea by asserting the triumphant role of the Chinese military in the war.

Japan's internal affairs ministry says the number of elderly people in the nation has set a new record high. The ratio of elderly to the total population is also the highest in the world.

The ministry publicized the figures on Sunday, one day before Japan marks Respect for the Aged Day.

It says the number of people aged 65 or older was a record 36.17 million as of last Tuesday. That's an increase of 300,000 from last year.

The ratio of elderly people to the overall population is a record 28.7 percent, marking a rise of 0.3 percentage points from last year. This increase is partly due to the total population shrinking by 290,000.

UN data also show that Japan's proportion of elderly people is the highest in the world and more than 5 percentage points larger than Italy's.

The ministry says Japan's elderly population consists of about 15.73 million men and roughly 20.44 million women. The female group is larger by 4.71 million.

Over 25 percent of the total female population are aged 70 or older. This is the first time the figure has surpassed the one-quarter mark.

Japan had 8.92 million elderly workers last year. They accounted for 13.3 percent of the total workforce. Both figures are all-time highs.

One in four elderly people, or 24.9 percent, had jobs. That represented a gain for the eighth consecutive year and was one of the highest ratios among the industrialized nations.

Some 300 giant pumpkins weighing over 60 kilograms each have been gathered at a contest in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, ahead of the Halloween season.

The contest in the city of Hitachiomiya judges which pumpkin is the heaviest. The annual event began 12 years ago when around 40 local farmers started growing pumpkins.

On Sunday, visitors enjoyed the sight of the huge pumpkins lined up in the parking lot of a local farmers' market. Some people took photos.

The heaviest pumpkin weighed 68.1 kilograms.

Ogushi Shoichi, the farmer who grew the winning pumpkin, said he was happy to win, but his pumpkin was lighter than the ones he usually grows.

He said he aims to produce a 100-kilogram pumpkin next year.

Local farmers say their pumpkins this year are smaller than usual due to a lack of sunshine during the rainy season, and to the summer heat wave. But they say the pumpkins are more glossy and have better color.

The head of the group that organized the event said he was glad that people enjoyed the contest, and that he hopes people feel happy to see such unusual pumpkins.
