Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has vowed full support for the effort to ensure fair access to coronavirus drugs and vaccines, including in developing countries.

He addressed the UN General Assembly via video.

In reference to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Suga said, "For the last 75 years, multilateralism has become stronger and made progress in the face of multiple challenges."

He said, "I call on all of you to unite in solidarity so we can turn the current crisis into an opportunity to reinforce our cooperation."

Suga said, "The spread of the coronavirus is a human security crisis, posing a threat to the lives, livelihoods and dignity of people across the globe. The guiding principle for us to overcome this crisis must be 'leave no one behind.'"

He said, "Japan fully supports the development of therapeutics, vaccines and diagnostics, and works towards ensuring fair and equitable access for all, including those in developing countries."

He said, "Japan also works with international organizations so that relevant international frameworks will be able to deliver results."

On the economy, Suga said, "Times of difficulty are in fact times of innovation." He said Japan, for its part, will work on digitalization as a matter of urgency.

On North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals, Suga said the issue must be resolved as soon as possible because of the advancing age of the victims' families.

He also said that as the new Prime Minister of Japan, he is ready to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without any conditions.

Suga concluded his speech by referring to the postponed Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. He said Japan is determined to host the Games in the summer of next year as proof that humanity has defeated the pandemic.

Finance ministers from the Group of Seven nations have backed the extension of a debt moratorium for low-income countries beyond the end of this year.

In April, the Group of 20 agreed to suspend official bilateral debt payments for the poorest countries until the end of the year.

During a teleconference on Friday, the G7 ministers discussed the worsening finances of developing countries due to the coronavirus pandemic. Their ballooning debts are seen as a risk to the global economy.

In a statement, the ministers expressed support for extending the initiative.

Financial institutions controlled by the Chinese government have not accepted the debt payment moratorium, even after the G20 agreement.

The G7 ministers expressed regret about some countries avoiding participation by classifying state-owned institutions as commercial lenders.

Japanese Finance Minister Aso Taro later told reporters that a fair response by all creditors, including China, is essential to fully support developing countries with debts.

He added that it is extremely significant that the G7 nations have a common understanding.

The World Health Organization has indicated that as many as 2 million people could die from the coronavirus before vaccines are available.

The head of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, Michael Ryan, spoke to reporters in Geneva on Friday.

Ryan referred to the number of deaths now being close to 1 million.

He said that looking at the realities of getting a vaccine out there in the next nine months, 2 million deaths "is not only imaginable, but unfortunately and sadly, very likely."

He stressed that to drive down that number, there is a need to take all possible measures, including testing, tracing, clinical care and social distancing.

The WHO's technical chief for the coronavirus response, Maria Van Kerkhove, warned that medical institutions in many European countries are enduring heavier burdens.

She said the WHO is worried about an increase in hospitalizations, as well as bed occupancy in those hospitalizations and in ICU.

The Chinese government says more than 600 million doses of coronavirus vaccines are expected to be made available by the end of this year.

A senior official at China's Ministry of Science and Technology said at news conference on Friday that four of the 11 potential vaccines under development in China are in the final phase of clinical testing and that the trials are going well.

Wu Yuanbin said the final-phase trials are being conducted outside China as well.

He said two of the four potential vaccines, being developed by state-backed China National Biotec Group, have been administered to more than 35,000 people in the Middle East. He said no conspicuous problems have been identified.

He said a potential vaccine being developed by Sinovac Biotech is in the final-phase trial in South America and Southeast Asia, and the one being jointly-developed by CanSino Biologics and a People's Liberation Army laboratory is also in the final-phase trial in Asia and Europe.

A specialist at the conference said a side effect called ADE, in which virus activity is enhanced due to a vaccine, has not been reported.

The director of the National Health Commission's Development Center for Medical Science and Technology, Zheng Zhongwei, said China will likely be able to produce 610 million doses of vaccination by the end of this year.

He added the country's production capacity will reach more than 1 billion doses in 2021.

Observers say China is trying to boost its international clout by highlighting the progress it has made in vaccine development.

The late US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has become the first woman in public office to lie in state at the Capitol in Washington.

Ginsburg died on September 18 at the age of 87.

Her casket was brought to the Capitol building for a memorial service on Friday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it is with profound sorrow she welcomed Ginsburg and opened the service. Pelosi said, "May she rest in peace."

Lying in state at the Capitol is considered the highest honor in the US. The only other woman to have been granted such a gesture was civil rights icon Rosa Parks, who lay "in honor" as a private citizen.

Following the ceremony, Ginsburg's coffin departed the building with US TV stations broadcasting live.

Lawmakers, along with Ginsburg's family and friends, lined up outside to bid their final farewells.

US media are reporting that President Donald Trump is set to nominate conservative judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

Trump is expected to announce the successor to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Saturday. Ginsburg, a liberal icon, died last week at age 87.

Media reports quoted informed sources as saying Trump plans to announce Barrett, a federal appeals court judge, as his nominee.

48-year-old Barrett is a devout Catholic and a mother of seven. She is reported to be critical of abortion and gun control.

Trump told reporters on Friday that he had made his decision, but declined to reveal it.

He said he hasn't said Barrett is his nominee, but that she is "outstanding."

If confirmed by the Senate, Barrett would expand a conservative majority at the Supreme Court to 6-3.

Trump earlier referred to the possibility that the November 3 presidential election will "end up in the Supreme Court," and that is why he thinks it is very important that the court has its full nine justices.

Organizers of the annual carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro have announced they will postpone the event, which was scheduled to be held in February next year, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

They said on Thursday the situation is unstable as it remains unknown when vaccines for the virus will be available.

The organizers said they will decide when to hold the event while looking at the situation surrounding vaccine development.

The parade of Samba dancers in extravagant outfits is the highlight of the Brazilian carnival, which draws millions of people from around the world.

Brazil currently has the world's third highest number of coronavirus cases.

One of the world's biggest auto events, the Beijing motor show, opened in the Chinese capital on Saturday.

The exhibition was initially scheduled for April but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 780 vehicles from around the world are on display. The show is smaller than usual, but the organizer says it is the only major event of its kind in the world to take place this year.

Visitors are asked at the entrance to display their health conditions on a smartphone screen on a 3-level scale.

China's auto market has been hit hard by the pandemic, but new car sales have increased year-on-year for the past five months, partly due to government stimulus.

Automakers from around the world are hoping to capitalize on the trend and expand their sales in China.

Participants are focusing on the performance of their electric vehicles, as well as new driver support functions.

The Chinese government is pushing for the introduction of so-called new-energy vehicles, such as plug-in hybrid cars.
