Typhoon Haikui is moving west over the waters south of Ishigaki Island in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa. It is coming closest to the Sakishima Islands, bringing high waves and strong winds.

As it approaches the islands, developed rain clouds are covering the islands intermittently, and may bring heavy rain with thunder.

Up to 100 millimeters of rain is expected on the Sakishima Islands in the 24 hours until Monday morning.

The Meteorological Agency warns of high waves, strong winds, landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers on the islands.
Meanwhile Tropical Storm Kirogi, which is heading west over waters north of the Ogasawara Islands far south of central Tokyo, is approaching close to the islands.

The waters near the Ogasawara and the Izu Islands are rough with strong winds.

As warm and moist air surrounding the storm is flowing into the Kanto and Tokai regions, heavy rain with thunder is likely.

Weather officials are calling for caution against landslides, swollen rivers, flooding in low-lying areas, lightning strikes, gusty winds, and hail.

Kirogi is expected to weaken to a tropical depression on Sunday afternoon.

Typhoon Haikui is expected to make a landfall on Taiwan as early as late Sunday afternoon. It will be the first typhoon to land there in four years.

Officials say as Haikui approaches, violent winds have been blowing in some parts of Taiwan since Sunday morning.

Winds and rain are worsening, especially in the east.

Gusts of around 108 kilometers per hour were recorded on an island in Taitung County.

Some parts of Yilan County have recorded more than 150 millimeters of rain since Saturday.

Air and sea transportation connecting Taiwan's main island and small islands has been disrupted, with some services cancelled.

Many train services have also been cancelled.

Taiwan authorities warn that Haikui could cause damage, as it is expected to advance slowly.

A North Korean media outlet has reported that two long-range strategic cruise missiles were test-launched at dawn on Saturday toward the Yellow Sea.

The ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported on Sunday that a military unit conducted the firing drill from the mouth of a river in the western part of the country.

It said that the drill was for a simulated tactical nuclear attack.

The paper reported that the missiles flew along a figure-8 flight plan and covered the distance of 1,500 kilometers in about 2 hours 8 minutes. It added that simulated warheads detonated at an altitude of 150 meters above a target island.

The paper reported that the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party ordered the test-firing as part of the drill in the face of joint military exercises by the United States and South Korea which recently took place.

The commission added that North Korea intends to make the US and South Korea understand "the situation that has reached a serious threat through the overpowering exercise of the war deterrence."

The South Korean military said on Saturday that the North had fired cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea.
They are believed to be the ones that Pyongyang said it launched.

North Korean strategic cruise missiles are said to be difficult to intercept because they fly in an oval-shaped or figure-8 shaped trajectory.

North Korea said on August 21 that it had conducted a naval strategic cruise missile firing drill.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to travel to New York to attend gatherings of the UN General Assembly and Security Council to be held later this month.

Albania's UN Ambassador Ferit Hoxha told reporters on Friday that a summit-level open debate will take place on September 20 to discuss the situation in Ukraine. Albania holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month.

Hoxha said he can "almost confirm" Zelenskyy will be in New York, adding that he knows that a meeting between the Ukrainian president and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has already been scheduled.

Zelenskyy is also expected to deliver a speech on the floor of the General Assembly, as the Assembly's General Debate schedule shows Ukraine's top leader will be attending its opening day on September 19.

This would mark Zelenskyy's first in-person presence at UN General Assembly and Security Council meetings since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February last year. He has been attending UN meetings online.

World leaders are expected to engage in active diplomacy during the General Debate of the General Assembly over the situation in Ukraine.

Russia's Foreign Ministry says Sergey Lavrov, the country's foreign minister, will speak during the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which starts on September 19.

The ministry made the announcement on Saturday.

It noted that Russia will work with countries from the Global South to try to build a fair and polycentric world order and counter neo-colonialism.

The ministry stressed that Russia intends to use diplomacy to counter Western nations at the United Nations. It noted that the "UN platform has turned into an arena for the West's unscrupulous methods." It added, "The attempts to push counterproductive politicized decisions in the interest of a narrow group of states, to stop or restrain participation of governments, 'undesirable' for the West, in UN structures are apparent."

Albania's UN Ambassador Ferit Hoxha spoke with reporters on Friday. He said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend meetings of the UN General Assembly and Security Council in person. Those conferences will be held later this month.
Albania currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council.

The Nobel Foundation has reversed its earlier decision and is disinviting the ambassadors of Russia, Belarus and Iran to attend this year's Nobel Prize awards ceremony in the Swedish capital of Stockholm on December 10.

The foundation made the announcement on Saturday, reversing a decision made just two days earlier.

The foundation had said on Thursday that it would invite the ambassadors of the three countries. It noted that "the achievements recognized by the Nobel Prize require openness, exchange and dialogue between people and nations."

The three countries had not been invited to last year's awards ceremony.

But following Thursday's announcement, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and others in Sweden criticized the foundation for inviting Russia while its military invasion of Ukraine continues.

The increasing criticism effectively forced the foundation to reverse its earlier decision.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the foundation says, "We believe that it is important and right to reach out as widely as possible with the values and messages that the Nobel Prize stands for."

It continued, "We recognize the strong reactions in Sweden, which completely overshadowed this message."

The foundation says the ambassadors of all countries will be invited to the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

Japan's government is looking at seeking a court order to disband the group widely known as the Unification Church as a religious corporation. Some officials suggest a dissolution order should be requested by the end of next month.

Culture ministry officials are examining the organization's alleged dubious marketing practices and solicitations of large donations from its followers.

They have exercised their legal authority to inquire into the religious organization on seven occasions. The officials have also interviewed lawyers who have been negotiating with the group as well as former followers.

Some government officials suggest a dissolution order should be requested by the end of October. Others point to the need to carefully examine whether such a request will meet legal requirements as the Constitution guarantees the freedom of religion.

The Religious Corporations Act stipulates that a religious group can immediately appeal a court order for it to disband.

Officials are also considering seeking a court order to fine the group for not appropriately responding to its inquiries.

An online exhibition promoting a nuclear-free world has opened, set up by a group of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Japan Confederation of A-and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations, or Hidankyo, says the threat of nuclear weapons is increasing as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues.

The group's Assistant Secretary General Hamasumi Jiro said the world must be informed of the consequences of nuclear weapons now more than ever, amid the heightened risk of nuclear weapons being used.

The exhibition, made up of about 50 panels of photos and texts, was set up by the confederation and other non-profit organizations.

It features items displayed in the past by the group at the UN Headquarters and elsewhere. Online visitors can see images of the devastation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki immediately after the bombings.

The site is available in Japanese and English to highlight the efforts of the survivors and others whose aim is to realize a world without nuclear weapons.

Officials say that the English site has been accessed mainly by overseas viewers in the US.

Crowdfunding is helping to manage the site with hopes of soon making it available in the languages of nuclear states Russia and China.

Families have gathered at an agricultural park in southwestern Japan to harvest grapes that are said to have the longest bunches in the world.

The variety called Nehelescol produces big bunches that can be as long as 90 centimeters and weigh 3 kilograms.

The harvest season has come for the fruit at Ruru Park in Kitsuki City, Oita Prefecture.

Participants carefully chose their bunches, as only one is allowed per person due to the limited number of grapes.

A mother with two children from Oita City said the grapes were sweet and refreshing.
