Morocco's state-run media say an earthquake that occurred late Friday night has left more than 2,000 dead.
The US Geological Survey reports the magnitude 6.8 quake occurred inland, with the epicenter about 70 kilometers from the central Moroccan city of Marrakesh.
The state-run media quotes the interior ministry as saying that the quake killed at least 2,012 people and injured 2,059.
In Marrakesh, there was no power outage and restaurants and businesses were open. But in the old part of the city, a World Heritage site, several buildings have sustained damage.
Medical professionals at a university hospital in Marrakesh are scrambling to attend to people who were hurt in the quake.
The injured were brought in even from areas far from the city. Tensions ran high every time an ambulance arrived carrying quake victims.
A 29-year-old doctor at the hospital said they are receiving people from a wide area around Marrakesh.
He said the medical residents, students and professors are there and that they are doing their best, but the number of patients is so huge that they cannot handle them by themselves.
The doctor said that they need more help, and that blood donation is the key now.
Local people have brought in relief supplies to a corner of the hospital premises. Volunteers were putting food, water, and other supplies into bags and loading vehicles with them for delivery to the hardest-hit area.
A volunteer in his 20s helping deliver aid said some routes are blocked, so there is no help for people in need. He said they are sending supplies with ambulances.
He said tents are most needed because many people are sleeping outside.

The leaders of the Group of 20 nations have adopted a consensus declaration that avoids wording directly condemning Russia.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who chairs this year's G20 summit in New Delhi, announced on Saturday that the declaration had been adopted. His announcement was met with applause from the bloc's leaders.
In regard to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the leaders' declaration states, "all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition." It also says, "the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible."
India's foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said "a considerable time was spent especially in the last few days in regard to geopolitical issues which really centered around the war in Ukraine." He stressed India's efforts as the chair to find common ground in light of sharp differences between the United States and other Western nations and Russia.
The New Delhi declaration failed to include the wording agreed at last year's G20 summit in Indonesia condemning Russia by name.
Ukraine's foreign ministry spokesperson reacted on social media, saying that the "G20 has nothing to be proud of."
The declaration also calls for the resumption and full implementation of the grain deal that allows exports of Ukrainian farm products through the Black Sea.
The New Delhi declaration stresses the necessity to meet demand in developing and least developed countries.
The G20 leaders will continue discussions in Sunday's sessions before they wrap up the two-day summit.

He said the hard work of all the teams involved led to agreements on the document.
He offered no details on any wording about the war in Ukraine. The topic has thwarted accord in the past amid differences between Western nations and Russia.
India proposed a draft to member states and continued coordination efforts for its adoption.
Modi opened the two-day meeting on Saturday by calling on the world to "come together and, first and foremost, transform this Global Trust Deficit into global trust and confidence."
Later in the meeting, membership was granted to the African Union.
During the first session, in which food security and climate change were discussed, members exchanged opinions on support for developing and emerging economies known as the Global South.

Russia and North Korea appear to be making arrangements for a summit between President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Russia's Far East.
Russia's presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced on Saturday that Putin is scheduled to visit the far eastern city of Vladivostok on Monday and Tuesday to attend an international conference called the Eastern Economic Forum. The four-day conference is set to open on Sunday in the city.
Peskov said the president will deliver a speech at a plenary session on Tuesday.
He said foreign guests at the economic forum will include high-ranking officials from Laos and China, and that he had "nothing to say" about a possible visit by the North Korean leader.
China's foreign ministry says Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing will attend the forum.
Local government officials in the maritime region told NHK that Kim will likely leave North Korea on Monday on board a special train.
At a station in Vladivostok, a crane was used to paint the walls of the station building and wash away stains in a cleanup operation that ended on Saturday.
Putin apparently seeks to discuss with the North Korean leader the possibility of the North supplying weapons as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues.

North Korea's state-run television has aired footage of a photo session at an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the country's founding.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had a photo shoot with the participants at the event on Saturday. On Sunday, the state-run TV broadcast footage of Kim and others posing for photos in front of the palace where his grandfather Kim Il Sung and his father Kim Jong Il are laid to rest.
The footage shows Kim in a suit approaching the attendees, waving at them and shaking hands. He was seen posing at the center in the front row.
Meanwhile, Pyongyang remains mum about speculation that leader Kim Jong Un will visit Russia for the first time in four years and meet with President Vladimir Putin.
When Kim visited Russia in 2019, North Korea's state media reported the day before that he was going to Russia soon. It then reported on the morning of the visit that Kim had departed on a special train.

An 82-year old Japanese woman who was left behind in the Philippines after World War Two has arrived in Japan. She is the first war-displaced descendant of Japanese migrants to travel to Japan after Manila waived fines that had been levied on such people for immigration violations.
Koyama Margarita Hiroko departed for Japan from Manila on Sunday. She was accompanied and assisted by staff of the Japanese Embassy and a support organization at the airport.
Koyama was separated from her Japanese father and left behind in the Philippines after the war. She was finally able to obtain Japanese citizenship in 2017.
But people like her were asked to pay fines by the Philippine government upon departure from the country because they were considered illegal residents. Koyama said that she was told to pay fines worth around 34,000 dollars.
Following negotiations with the Japanese Embassy officials, the Philippine government in July decided to waive fines on such people. They will effectively be freed from paying the fines if they can obtain a certificate issued by the Embassy, among other conditions.
Koyama says she plans to visit her father's grave in Japan. She says she never imagined she could actually visit Japan and does not know what she will say to her father, but she knows that she will cry.
Minister at the Japanese Embassy in Manila Hanada Takahiro, who was at the airport to see her depart, said the Japanese government will continue to do its best to make such travel to Japan as smooth as possible.
