Leaders of the world's biggest economies have begun two-days of talks at the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi. The global food crisis and climate change are included on the agenda for a meeting that comes amid a widening split in the international community.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has worsened a food and energy crisis and deepened divisions among some countries.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his opening address to call for seeking common ground between the US and Russia, among others. He said a global trust deficit should be reversed and that it is time for world leaders to move together.

India has sought to distance itself from both the West and Russia since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. It aims to play a coordinating role in geopolitics.

Modi also announced that the African Union has been granted permanent member status in the G20 bloc, furthering his drive to give a greater voice to developing and emerging economies known as the Global South.

But recent ministerial meetings leading up to the summit have failed to issue a joint statement due to differences over the wording on the war in Ukraine.

Last year's summit in Indonesia managed to agree on a joint declaration by incorporating opinions from both the US and Russia. But it could be difficult this time to reach a consensus even with such a compromise.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are not attending. This could suggest to some a diminishing role for the G20.

The war in Ukraine and climate change have hit countries in the Global South especially hard with rising food and energy prices.

It remains to be seen whether G20 leaders will make headway toward resolving global issues.

Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa has arrived in Ukraine for talks on reconstruction assistance amid Russia's ongoing military operation.

Hayashi arrived in Ukraine on Saturday following a visit to Poland.

He plans to go to Bucha, near the capital of Kyiv, where many civilians have lost their lives due to Russia's aggression.

Hayashi is also scheduled to meet with high-ranking government officials including Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. This is the first visit to Ukraine by a Japanese foreign minister since Russia's invasion began in February of last year.

Hayashi is expected to relay the intentions of Japan, as this year's Group of Seven chair, to lead international discussions on maintaining and strengthening sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine.

Japanese company officials, including Rakuten Group Chairman and CEO Mikitani Hiroshi, have accompanied Hayashi to Ukraine.

Hayashi is expected to convey that Japan's public and private sectors will work together to assist Ukraine's reconstruction efforts.

North Korea held a paramilitary parade in central Pyongyang on Friday to mark the country's 75th founding anniversary, which falls on Saturday.

The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that leader Kim Jong Un attended the event with his daughter.

The parade featured members of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards. It was the country's third parade this year involving the national military or paramilitary troops, and it was likely meant to boost national prestige.

A delegation led by China's Vice Premier Liu Guozhong and a Russian army band were reportedly invited to the event, apparently in a show of unity of the three nations as a counterforce to the US and its allies.

South Korean media have reported that North Korea staged a paramilitary parade in central Pyongyang at the stroke of midnight Saturday. Saturday marks the 75th anniversary of North Korea's founding.

Yonhap News Agency has reported that members of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards, not the national military, took part in the parade in Kim Il Sung Square. It says the parade did not appear to feature strategic weapons such as intercontinental ballistic missiles. The paramilitary group last conducted a parade in 2021.

The news outlet also reported a delegation led by China's Vice Premier Liu Guozhong is believed to have attended celebrations. Sources say a Russian band was also invited.

The events are believed to showcase the unity of the three nations as a counterforce to the US and its allies.

Yonhap also said details of the event, including whether North Korean leader Kim John Un delivered a speech, were not immediately known.

This is the third military-style parade in North Korea this year, including one staged by the national army. There was a parade in July to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

Prior to Saturday's event, state-run television repeatedly aired a launching ceremony for a tactical nuclear attack submarine attended by Kim Jong Un on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Kim is reportedly set to travel to Russia for the first time in four years to meet with President Vladimir Putin. There's concern the two leaders might discuss a deal that would give the North Russian aid in developing satellite and nuclear-powered submarine technologies in exchange for armaments.

Chinese security authorities say Myanmar has handed over more than 1,200 online fraud suspects.

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security said Myanmar authorities helped to transport the 1,207 suspects on Wednesday.

China's state-run Central Television aired footage of many of them waiting to be repatriated near the China-Myanmar border.

China has been plagued by scams involving smartphones, PCs and other devices. Some observers say fraud carried out by criminal groups is a growing problem. These groups have been moving their bases to Southeast Asian countries, apparently to escape crackdowns in China.

Chinese authorities have been going after scammers outside the country. Last month, 88 people were detained in Indonesia on suspicion of defrauding people in China.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says its sampling and analysis of seawater near Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant shows that the tritium levels are below the country's operational limit.

The UN nuclear watchdog on Friday announced the results of its first independent sampling and measurement of seawater since the discharge of the treated and diluted water from the plant began on August 24.

The IAEA says seawater was taken from several locations within 3 kilometers of the plant.

The agency says the results show consistency with the values reported by plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company and Japan's Environment Agency.

In July, the IAEA released a report saying Japan's water release plan is consistent with international safety standards.

IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi has said the agency plans to continue its monitoring and analysis after the discharge begins.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant suffered a triple meltdown in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Water used to cool molten fuel has been mixing with rain and groundwater.

The accumulated water is being treated to remove most radioactive substances, but still contains tritium. Before releasing the treated water into the sea, the plant's operator dilutes it to reduce tritium levels to about one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guidelines for drinking water.

Some Japanese companies have started to review their relationship with a major talent agency whose late founder, Johnny Kitagawa, sexually abused minors. They say they are dropping personalities represented by Johnny & Associates from their advertisements.

Kirin Holdings will stop creating new ads and promotional materials with entertainers under contract to the agency. The food and beverage manufacturer says it will not renew contracts with the agency's performers.

Kirin says it won't do business with the agency until it takes specific steps to compensate the victims, prevent recurrences, and demonstrate sound corporate governance.

Asahi Group Holdings currently uses 23 personalities from the agency to promote four of its products.

It says it won't create new ads and promotions with celebrities connected to Johnny & Associates. And it says it will phase out ads in which they appear. The company says it will not renew existing contracts.

Asahi Group Holdings is urging the talent agency to swiftly implement preventive measures and make amends to the victims.

Japan Airlines will stick to its policy of suspending the use of performers from the agency in its ads.

Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance is considering terminating contracts with the agency.

The agency had apologized after admitting that its late founder committed acts of sexual misconduct for many years.

It also announced it will work to compensate the victims, and consult with experts to ensure that human rights are respected.
