China has become the first country to formally name a new ambassador to Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in the country in August 2021.

The Taliban say Chinese ambassador Zhao Xing was greeted at the presidential palace in Kabul and had a meeting with top-ranking officials, including acting Prime Minister Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund.

The Taliban have not been officially recognized by any foreign governments. There are other diplomats in Kabul with the title of ambassador, but all of them took up their posts before 2021.

Beijing did not indicate whether Wednesday's appointment signaled any major steps towards formal recognition of the Taliban.

The Taliban regime is struggling to revive its economy amid sanctions and asset-freezing activities by the international community. On the other hand, China has been actively engaging with the Taliban administration at various levels, such as investment and infrastructure projects.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the acting Prime Minister Akhund told the Chinese envoy in the meeting that relations between the two countries were important.

A Kremlin spokesperson says Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's invitation to visit his country.

Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Putin "gratefully accepted" the invitation extended by the North Korean leader during their summit in Russia's Far East on the previous day. Peskov said the two countries will further coordinate the visit via diplomatic channels.

Moscow had earlier said Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would travel to North Korea next month to meet his counterpart. The diplomats are expected to discuss mutual visits by their leaders. But it remains unclear whether Putin will visit North Korea.

Meanwhile, Peskov said on Thursday that Putin is scheduled to meet his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko in the southern Russian city of Sochi on Friday. The two neighboring countries are allies.

The Belarusian presidential office also announced the meeting, saying the leaders "will discuss the international agenda and regional issues."

Putin and Lukashenko are expected to talk about matters related to Ukraine, which Russia has been invading. They are also likely to discuss ways to cope with economic sanctions imposed by Western nations.

Analysts say Putin is seeking to bolster ties with countries that are at odds with Western nations.

Japanese musician Yoshiki has left prints of his hands and feet in cement in a ceremony at a Hollywood theater. He's the first Japanese to leave his mark alongside those of legendary stars.

The imprint ceremony for the member of the popular rock band X Japan took place at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Thursday.

The Hollywood landmark is famous for the handprints and footprints of world-famous celebrities in its forecourt.

Standing on stage, Yoshiki said he "wanted to prove that nothing is impossible" and that even a person from Japan who didn't speak English could pursue the American dream.

The musician added that he wanted to dedicate the honor to his mother, who died last year.

After the ceremony, Yoshiki said he still doesn't feel a sense of accomplishment.

He also expressed gratitude to his deceased father and late X Japan members Hide and Taiji.
