China's new map claiming most of the South China Sea and disputed areas along the India border as Chinese territory has sparked anger across the region.

China's Ministry of Natural Resources published this year's version of the country's standard map last week.

The map indicates most of the South China Sea as Chinese territory, as Beijing claims, drawing protests from countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson responded by emphasizing its "consistent and clear" position on the South China Sea, and called for concerned parties to "view it in an objective and rational light."

The map also marks two disputed areas claimed by both India and China as Chinese territory.

India has rejected China's claim, saying, "Such steps by the Chinese side only complicate the resolution of the boundary question."

The new map will likely affect discussions at the ASEAN summit that began in Indonesia on Tuesday, as well as the Group of 20 summit that opens in India later this week.

Leaders and top diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations kicked off a summit meeting on Tuesday in Jakarta. At the top of the agenda is the situation in Myanmar where battles are intensifying between the military that seized power two years ago and pro-democracy groups.

Peace efforts in Myanmar have dominated the discussions at recent ASEAN meetings, but little progress has been made.

Indonesian president and chair of the summit Joko Widodo reiterated his call for unity.

"Don't make our ship, ASEAN, an arena for rivalry that destroys each other, but make this ASEAN ship a field for growing cooperation, for creating prosperity, creating stability, creating peace," he said.

The summit will also be focusing on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea. China and some ASEAN members have overlapping claims in the waters. That discussion comes days after Beijing released a new map touting its territorial claims.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is in Indonesia to hold summit talks with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well as China and South Korea.

The summit with ASEAN leaders is to be held on Wednesday. This year marks the 50th anniversary of friendship and cooperation between Japan and ASEAN.

Kishida is expected to call for further cooperation in a wide range of areas including infrastructure investment, maritime activities and cybersecurity to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order.

He also plans to explain to the leaders about the safety of treated and diluted water being released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Later in the day, Kishida is also scheduled to attend a summit between ASEAN, Japan, China and South Korea.

China has been staunchly opposed to the release of the water into the ocean.

Attention is on whether Chinese Premier Li Qiang will make remarks on the matter and whether he and Kishida will speak in person.

Japanese architect Ban Shigeru says he will cooperate in building a surgical ward belonging to a hospital in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv to provide treatment to people who have been injured in Russia's invasion of the country.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy and the world-renowned architect unveiled the plan in a news conference on Tuesday in Tokyo.

They said they aim to start the construction of the hospital ward using Ukrainian timber next summer. They said they hope to raise about 80 million dollars for construction costs, and are counting on support from the international community.

The mayor reportedly asked Ban to design the building.

Ban stressed that "We need to build immediately, even before the war is ended."

Sadovyy said Ukraine is fighting to protect its independence and needs Japan's experience, indicating his wish to apply Japan's knowledge and technologies to improve medical care.

About 150,000 internally displaced people are said to be living in Lviv after they fled Russian attacks in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine. The city has a population of about 700,000.

More than 15,000 injured people have reportedly received treatment in the city.
