Sources close to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have told NHK that 118 new cases of coronavirus infections were confirmed on Saturday.

It is the first time for the daily tally to surpass 100 in Japan's capital. Tokyo's cumulative total now stands at 891.

Tokyo officials have strongly urged people to refrain from non-essential outings two weekends in a row. But they haven't requested that people refrain from shopping for daily necessities or going to doctors.

Tokyo officials say the number of people whose infection routes are unclear is rising. So are infections among young people.

They have called on residents to consider whether their outings are absolutely necessary.

Officials have also urged people to avoid going out at night as a series of cluster infections were confirmed in the city's entertainment and amusement districts.

They have also warned people to avoid closed, crowded places and close-contact settings to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.

Saturday morning around Tokyo's Ikebukuro station was quieter than usual following a public request that people stay home. Department stores stood shuttered behind posters advising of temporary closures. The district's major electronics stores displayed shorter opening hours.

Crowds have thinned as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government urges against non-essential weekend outings. It is one measure to contain the coronavirus.

A 58-year-old man from Nerima Ward said he needed to come to Ikebukuro for grocery shopping as he works on weekdays. He said he would spend the rest of the weekend watching TV at home.

A taxi driver waiting at the station said there appeared to be very few people. He said he worries whether his company will survive the pandemic.

Officials at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government say requests for loans to support small and medium-sized businesses have reached five times the sum expected.

The loan program for firms affected by the coronavirus pandemic opened on March 6.

The government says it had anticipated applications by the end of March would reach about 24.8 billion yen, or about 228 million dollars.

But they say by March 31, they had received about 120 billion yen, or about 1.1 billion dollars' worth of requests.

Governor Koike Yuriko says the administration will continue to extend the financial safety net to small and medium- sized businesses.

The government of Japan is planning to increase the scale of its financial support program for companies affected by the coronavirus pandemic to five trillion yen, or about 46 billion US dollars.

The program allows the government-affiliated Development Bank of Japan to use the government fund to lend to businesses in times of emergency.

In March, the government set aside 204 billion yen, or about 1.9 billion dollars, as part of the second set of measures to help businesses.

But the decline of the economic situation has been so severe that the government has decided to expand the scheme.

The government also plans to help small- and medium-sized companies take out loans from private financial institutions with virtually no interest.

Officials say these measures will run up to a total of 40 trillion yen, or about 370 billion dollars.

The government plans to make arrangements to include such support in an emergency economic package to be compiled in the first half of next week.

Major Asian airlines have been forced to cancel most of their passenger flights due to worldwide restrictions on the movement of people to prevent the spread of the new type of coronavirus.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways announced on Friday that it will cancel about 97 percent of its passenger flights scheduled for April.

Cathay Pacific connects more than 100 cities around the world. But the company says that it will only operate flights twice to three times a week to 15 cities, including London and Japan's Narita airport near Tokyo.

Hong Kong International Airport plans to temporarily close one of its two runways from next Wednesday.
.

The airport is one of Asia's major hubs with more than 1,000 take-offs and landings a day. But the number of flights has decreased significantly since last month, excluding cargo flights.

The Thai government has announced that it will suspend incoming passenger flights for 3 days from Saturday to next Monday to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

Thai Airways International has announced that it will suspend all international passenger flights until May 31.

The head of the World Health Organization has called on countries to remove financial barriers to healthcare to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke to reporters in Geneva on Friday.

Tedros said if people forgo care because they can't afford it, they not only harm themselves, but also make the pandemic harder to control and put society at risk.

He called for measures to support the vulnerable, including providing free testing for COVID-19 and care for patients.

WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan reiterated the importance of hand washing and social distancing.

Regarding the use of masks, he said wearing one will make it less likely for a sick person to infect others. But he also stressed people who are sick should be isolated in the first place.

The WHO said on Friday the number of people infected with the new coronavirus has exceeded 1 million worldwide, and more than 50,000 people have died.

The night became silent in an entertainment district in the Thai capital Bangkok on Friday as a nationwide curfew came into effect to curb the coronavirus outbreak.

Tourism is one of Thailand's key industries. The streets of the entertainment quarter are lined with bars and karaoke parlors, and are usually crowded with people every night.

On Friday, about three hours were left after the sunset before the 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew began. But shops and signs remained dark. Food stalls closed early as there were few people on the streets.

Massage parlors and other entertainment venues in Bangkok have already been shut down since late last month. Dining in at restaurants has also been banned.

But the country continues to report more than 100 new infection cases almost daily.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the country should prioritize health over freedom when he announced the curfew.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200404_01/

NHK has learned that the International Olympic Committee has told international sports federations to apply age limits flexibly for the postponed Tokyo Games.

The Summer Olympics have been pushed back a year due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Games are now scheduled to open on July 23, 2021.

The decision has raised concern that many soccer players who helped their teams to qualify will be unable to compete next year because of the under-23 age limit of men's soccer.

Sources say the IOC gave the notification to allow athletes who have already qualified to take part in the delayed Games.

In men's soccer, the measure means the requirement for players to be born on or after January 1, 1997 would still apply next year.

If soccer's world governing body, FIFA, agrees, all current members will continue to be eligible in 2021.
