Japan's cumulative total of confirmed infections with the coronavirus surpassed 10,000 on Saturday.

The figure now stands at 10,098, excluding cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo earlier this year.

The total tally includes 2,975 infections that have been reported in Tokyo to date. Sources say 181 new cases were confirmed in the capital on Saturday.

City streets and tourist hot spots in Japan are quiet on the first weekend since a state of emergency over the coronavirus outbreak was expanded nationwide.

The famous sand dunes of Tottori Prefecture, in western Japan, were largely free of people on Saturday.

Shikoku island's 88-temple pilgrimage has also been affected. One destination, Enmeiji Temple in Ehime Prefecture's Imabari City, has closed the office that issues certificates to pilgrims.

The association of the 88 temples asked all of its members on Saturday to shut their certification offices.

US President Donald Trump has announced a significantly lower projection for the death toll from coronavirus infections in the US, touting his administration's response to the outbreak.

Trump told reporters on Friday he now expects the final tally could be around 60,000 to 65,000. His administration had earlier predicted that 100,000 to 240,000 people in the US could die.

Trump said good work by his government has helped to save many lives.

He also announced a 19-billion-dollar relief program for farmers struggling due to the pandemic.

The measures will include direct payments to farmers and mass purchases of agricultural products.

Political observers say the new program appears to have been put together with the November presidential election in mind.

Trump has been holding daily talks with business leaders, who want to reopen the economy as early as possible.

Key words : Cuomo federal funding

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has criticized US President Donald Trump over his guidelines for resuming economic activity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, Cuomo said Trump is putting the responsibility on state governors without providing funds. He likened the situation to "passing the buck without passing the bucks."

Trump announced the guidelines on Thursday. He said governors should work on when to start reopening their economies.

Cuomo told reporters that about 2,000 infected people were newly admitted to hospitals in New York the day before.

He said the number of patients needs to drop before reopening the economy. He also stressed the need for large-scale coronavirus antibody tests.

The governor said federal funding will be necessary to significantly increase testing capacity and reopen economic activities.

Trump has been critical of Cuomo's request for federal support. In response, the governor said the president should "maybe get up and go to work" instead of watching TV.

Trump took to Twitter during Cuomo's news conference to say the governor should spend more time "doing" and less time "complaining."

New York has been the worst-hit US state, with 222,284 coronavirus cases and 12,822 deaths.

US Republican governors are moving to reopen their state economies following President Donald Trump's announcement of guidelines for easing restrictions.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott told reporters on Friday that state parks will re-open on Monday. He added retail shops from next Friday can deliver items by mail or to doorsteps, or allow customers to collect them.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced Thursday the state economy will reopen in phases starting from May 1.

In the state of Florida, Mayor Lenny Curry of Jacksonville said beaches and parks would reopen from Friday for limited hours.

The moves come as protesters in a number of states take to the streets against lockdown measures.
Republican support groups are involved in many of the demonstrations.

Democratic governors of hard-hit states have expressed caution about reopening their economies, saying it could lead to another rise in infections.

Financial analysts say even if business activities resume, many people may continue to refrain from going out for fear of the virus. Companies may also face the challenge of how to secure the safety of their workers.

New York authorities say nearly 2,500 people have died of the coronavirus at nursing homes in the state.

The officials said on Friday that the virus has killed a total of 2,477 people. They said 19 homes listed 20 deaths or more and that five of them registered at least 40 fatalities.

The New York Times reported on Friday that at least 7,000 people living in or connected to nursing homes have died of the coronavirus across the country.

Critics say that some care facilities have refused to disclose the condition of residents to their families to cover up infections inside.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told a news conference on Friday that the state will require nursing homes to inform families if a resident becomes infected or dies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking nursing homes to act according to its guidelines.

The list calls on facilities to develop or review existing plans to mitigate staffing shortages from illness or absenteeism. It also urges facilities to immediately restrict all visitation, except for certain compassionate care reasons.

Key words : WHO little evidence
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200418_08/

A senior World Health Organization official says there is little evidence to suggest that enough people have been exposed to the new coronavirus to offer so-called herd immunity to the broader population.

The organization's top emergencies expert, Mike Ryan, made the remark at a news conference on Friday.

Ryan was commenting on antibody tests, which are designed to show who has been infected and recovered. Many countries regard the tests as a precursor to ending lockdowns and reopening their economies.

Ryan noted there is an expectation that the majority of people have developed antibodies for the virus, breaking the chain of infection and creating herd immunity.
But he said preliminary information would suggest that a low percentage of people have the antibodies in their blood.

Ryan said there is still a lot of uncertainty about the effectiveness of the tests, and that it is unclear whether someone with antibodies is fully protected against reinfection.

He added that the tests may not solve the problem that governments are trying to solve.

Key words : Italy health warn

The head of Italy's national institute of health says most of the country's population is still susceptible to contracting the new coronavirus.

Silvio Brusaferro told reporters on Thursday that he has been working to find out how many people have been infected and developed antibodies.

He said more than 90 percent of the country's population is estimated to have not contracted the virus.

He warned it could spread again if there is an easing of restrictions designed to keep people from coming into contact with each other.

Brusaferro said in order to contain the virus, about 70 to 80 percent of the population need to have antibodies. He said that will be difficult to realize immediately.

Italy has a stay-at-home order in place across the country until May 3. Officials will likely face the challenge of coming up with ways to halt the spread of the virus before lifting the measure.

Italy has a population of about 60 million people. More than 1.24 million have been tested for the virus, of which 172,434 were positive. Some people say the actual number of infected people is higher because tests are not conducted sufficiently.

Italy has the second-highest death toll after the United States.
