Italy's death toll from the coronavirus outbreak has surpassed 20,000 -- the second highest in the world after the United States.

The Italian government announced on Monday that 20,465 people had died of COVID-19.

The number of new infections in Italy has continued to drop since the start of April, with intensive care patient figures also falling daily since April 4.

On Friday, the Italian government said its nationwide lockdown, which has been in place for more than a month, would be extended for three weeks until May 3.

The government decided on the extension in a desperate bid to contain the outbreak, despite concerns of a serious impact on the economy.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo says the statewide death toll from the coronavirus outbreak has topped 10,000.

Cuomo told reporters on Monday that 671 people died the previous day, bringing the total to 10,056. This marks a decline from the 700-plus deaths recorded for six days previously.

The governor said the curve has been flattened by people's actions. He said that he believes the worst is over if people continue to behave cautiously.

He said, "If we do something stupid, you will see those numbers go right back up tomorrow."

The state of New York accounts for over 40 percent of the total death toll in the US, which is now more than 22,000.

The US Navy has reported its first coronavirus death from the crew of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt.

The Navy said in a statement on Monday that the sailor tested positive on March 30 and was placed in isolation at a base in Guam. He was moved to an intensive care unit after his condition worsened on April 9.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has 585 confirmed infections among its crew of roughly 5,000.

The first death on the ship comes amid leadership turmoil. Its commander was dismissed early this month for widely distributing a letter that called for urgent action to prevent a coronavirus crisis on board.

The acting Navy secretary later resigned for insulting the captain in a speech to the ship's crew.

Coronavirus infections have so far been reported on four US aircraft carriers.

The Navy said on Monday that the Harry S. Truman will remain at sea to protect its sailors from the virus. The aircraft carrier strike group was headed to a port in the US after completing its deployment in the Middle East.

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the country's lockdown will be extended until May 11 to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Macron said in a televised speech on Monday night that strict confinement must continue in order to save lives. France has been under a nationwide lockdown since March 17.

Macron said nurseries and schools will gradually reopen from May 11. He said restaurants, movie theaters and museums will remain closed, while large-scale events will be delayed until mid-July at the earliest.

As of Monday, the country had confirmed more than 130,000 infections and nearly 15,000 deaths. The figures are the fourth highest in the world, after the United States, Spain and Italy.

French authorities say both infections and deaths are now rising at a slower pace, but the country's medical system remains overstretched. Over 6,800 patients are being treated in intensive care -- more than in Italy or Spain.

Macron also said the European Union will keep its borders closed indefinitely. The issue is likely to be discussed at the next EU summit.

The head of the World Health Organization says COVID-19 is 10 times deadlier than the flu pandemic of 2009.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva on Monday that the spread of COVID-19 "accelerates very fast, it decelerates much more slowly."

He said the control measures that countries have implemented to fight the virus "must be lifted slowly, and with control". He added that they cannot be lifted "all at once."

The WHO lists six criteria for countries to use when they consider lifting their restrictions.

The criteria include whether the transmission of coronavirus is controlled, and whether measures are in place to detect, test, isolate and treat every case and trace ever contact.

The Director-General's regular briefing came after President Donald Trump suggested the US will review its funding for the WHO.

Tedros said the US is the largest contributor to his organization. He said he knows that Trump is supportive and that he hopes the US will continue offering funding to the WHO.

Japan's health ministry says those who died or got seriously ill from the coronavirus were largely elderly but also included younger people.

The ministry released a breakdown of cases in Japan by age group, including deaths and seriously ill patients.

The country saw 102 people die from the virus as of Sunday: 37 of them were in their 70s, and 36 in their 80s. Also, two people in their 40s died.

Of the 135 who fell seriously ill, many were in their 50s or older: 39 of them were in their 60s, and 32 in their 70s.

But the critically ill patients also include 10 people in their 40s, five in their 30s, and one aged between 10 and 19, and another under the age of 10.
The country had a total of some 7,000 cases of infection. People in their 40s or younger made up more than half of the total, with around 3,700.

The figures highlighted the possibility of young people with mild or no symptoms unwittingly spreading the virus.

Ministry officials called on people, including younger generations, to refrain from non-essential outings and avoid crowded spaces with poor ventilation.

The Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, is calling on member companies to supply industrial masks that can be repurposed for medical use.

Keidanren put out the call to its roughly 1,400 members on Monday, in response to a government request.

Japan is experiencing acute shortages of high-performance masks to protect medical professionals treating coronavirus patients.

Keidanren is specifically asking if members have surplus stocks of N95 and DS2 masks. These are often used to protect workers from dust at factories and on construction sites.

The group is also asking if members have surplus dust-proof clothes and goggles, of the kind used at semiconductor foundries. Such equipment can be used as a substitute for surgical gowns and goggles.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways will further slash their international flight capacities amid the growing impact of the coronavirus on air travel.

The two Japanese airlines will continue to try to cope with falling demand in the coming month.

JAL says it will cut the number of flights on all 60 international routes by 4,568, or 94 percent, for the month of May. Its services between Haneda and Sydney and between Haneda and Honolulu will be suspended.

ANA says it will slash flights on 71 international routes, excluding the Narita-Los Angeles service, by 3,323, or 90 percent between April 25 and May 15.

The carriers say they may further curtail their services should the situation worsen.

US Senator Bernie Sanders has endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president.

Sanders made the endorsement when he joined Biden's campaign live stream on Monday.

Sanders asked all Americans to come together to support Biden and make certain that they defeat President Donald Trump in the presidential election. He said that he will do all he can to see that that happens.

Biden told his former rival that he is looking forward to working with him, and that he would try his best not to let everybody down.

The two said that they had agreed to form six task forces on policy matters covering the economy, education, climate change and three other areas.

Sanders apparently wants his progressive policies, including universal healthcare, to be reflected in the party's platform.

Democrats attribute their setback in the 2016 presidential election to discord between the progressive and moderate wings within the party.

Attention is focused whether Sanders' endorsement will help unite the party for the general election.
