Fewer people were seen on the streets of Japan's major cities than normal on Sunday after authorities asked residents to stay home to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

In Tokyo's Shinjuku district, major department stores and clothing shops shut their doors. Notices of temporary closure were put out at karaoke parlors.

A square in front of the east exit of Shinjuku Station is usually crowded with shoppers and people waiting to meet friends. But it was quiet on Sunday.

A Shinjuku resident in his 20s said it seemed strange as there were so few people. He said he was out to get a prescription from a hospital, and will return home immediately.

A woman in her 20s said she took her dog for a walk, as it is suffering stress from staying home for long periods. She said there were fewer people in town than last week and that she felt a sense of tension.

At Osaka Castle Park in western Japan, about 3,000 cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The place is usually filled with people holding parties on picnic sheets to appreciate the blossoms. But this year, people are advised not to do so. A few visitors calmly looked at the cherry blossoms while taking a stroll.

A couple in their 20s said they are considering postponing their wedding scheduled for next month. They said they have canceled their honeymoon trip and visited the park, wishing to take photos in their wedding attire. They say they will quickly finish the photo shoot and return home.

The illumination of cherry flowers in the park has also been canceled.

Medical experts say Japan urgently needs more doctors with specialist skills and experience to treat serious coronavirus patients.

The Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine issued a statement on Wednesday that points to the different fatality rates for coronavirus patients in Germany and Italy.

It says Germany's fatality rate was 1.1 percent at the end of March, compared to Italy's 11.7 percent, and they attribute this to the higher quality of Germany's intensive care system.

The statement says Italy has more than twice as many intensive care beds per 100,000 people than Japan does.

It warns that the intensive care units at Japanese hospitals could be quickly overwhelmed by surging numbers of seriously ill patients.

The organization says four times as many nurses are required for intensive forms of treatment, and there are not many doctors who can use ventilators or ECMO machines that support breathing and heart functions.

It says only about 1,000 of the approximately 6,500 beds available for intensive care in Japan may actually be utilized, and getting more equipment will not resolve the problem.

The society calls for action to be taken to maintain the intensive care system, such as securing doctors who have experience treating seriously ill patients.

US President Donald Trump has warned the country to brace for a lot of deaths in the coming week, as the coronavirus pandemic worsens there.

Trump said at a daily briefing on Saturday that the country is heading into "one of the toughest weeks" of the outbreak. He added there's going to be a lot of deaths unfortunately.

The president urged people to continue following national guidelines, such as by refraining from outings and practicing social distancing to slow the spread of the coronavirus. He called the fight against the virus the patriotic duty of the people.

Trump said he had ordered the military to send 1,000 personnel, including doctors and nurses, to New York City, the current epicenter of the US outbreak.

A tally by Johns Hopkins University shows infection cases in the United States have topped 300,000, the highest in the world. Over 8,000 people have died from the virus in the country.

The US government estimates that up to 240,000 Americans could be killed in the pandemic, even if sweeping orders to stay home are followed.

Spain has confirmed the second largest number of coronavirus cases after the United States, exceeding Italy.

The Spanish government announced on Saturday that the country's confirmed infections increased by 7,026 from Friday, bringing the total to 124,736.

Fatalities also increased by 809 to 11,744. That's the second highest, following Italy.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told reporters on Saturday that more time is needed to curb the spread of the virus in his country.

He said the government will again extend the state of emergency, which was due to expire on April 11, by another two weeks.

The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 14. Non-essential outings have been strictly restricted. That measure will continue for a total of six weeks along with the extension of the state of emergency.

Italy was the first country to impose the restriction in Europe, and it's been recognized as effective in slowing the increase in the number of new cases.

In a televised interview on Saturday, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said social distancing is the only way to curb the spread of the coronavirus, as no vaccine or treatment has been developed.

He called on people to keep observing the national lockdown, which will be in place through April 13.

Robots are helping medical workers in Italy reduce the risk of coronavirus infection. The country is one of the worst-hit by the virus.

Six robots at a hospital in the northern region of Lombardy will help workers reduce direct contact with patients and save protective gear like face masks.

The robots are remotely controlled and are equipped with cameras to enable doctors to check on patients.

They can keep track of metrics such as patients' breathing, blood pressure and heart rate. The robots can also have simple chats with patients.

More than 9,500 healthcare workers have contracted the virus in Italy. About 124,000 people have been confirmed infected in the country, which has the world's highest coronavirus death toll at over 15,000.

A doctor at the hospital says staff members are pleased with the work of the robots because they reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infection.

The Egyptian government says it has postponed the opening of a museum that is under construction outside Cairo with Japanese aid. It cited the spread of the coronavirus in and outside the country as the reason for the action.

The government said on Saturday that it pushed back the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum from 2020 to 2021. The facility is being built in Giza, which is known for its pyramids.

The museum is scheduled to constantly display 50,000 items, including artifacts unearthed in King Tut's grave.

Japan has been helping with its construction by providing financial assistance and training personnel, such as restorers of cultural assets.

The Egyptian government also announced the postponement of the planned start of transferring civil servants to an envisioned new administrative capital in a Cairo suburb from June to next year.

Egypt has confirmed more than 1,000 infections with the coronavirus. The authorities have taken measures to combat the epidemic, such as a nationwide nighttime curfew and the closure of tourism facilities.

Welsh-born author and conservationist C.W. Nicol, who was famous in Japan for working to protect forests and ecosystems died of rectal cancer on Friday. He was 79.

Before moving to Japan, Nicol worked as a marine mammal researcher for the Fisheries Research Board of Canada.

Captivated by Japanese culture and nature, Nicol moved to the Kurohime Highland area in central Japan's Nagano Prefecture in the 1980s and launched his career as a writer.

Nicol wrote "A Letter from Kurohime," an essay on the beauty of the relationship between Japan's rural communities and forests. He also wrote "Harpoon," a novel about Japan's traditional whaling culture.

Nicol felt a sense of crisis as Japan's forests were damaged by logging and became active in preserving and reviving woodlands. He bought a large plot of virgin forest where he could put his resource-management theories into practice.

Nicol used his high profile on TV and other media to spread the word about the importance of protecting nature.

He was committed to helping rebuild areas devastated by the major earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
Nicol helped to build an all-wood elementary school in Miyagi Prefecture. He wanted children to learn from nature and help them heal the psychological scars left by the disaster.

Nicol became a Japanese citizen in 1995 and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2005.

He had been fighting rectal cancer since 2016. The foundation he headed, the C.W. Nicol Afan Woodland Trust, says it hopes to hold a farewell ceremony for him after the coronavirus epidemic is contained.
