UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling on religious leaders around the world not to hold events that attract many people to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Many people of strong faith have continued to attend religious events, even after governments around the world strictly restricted outings.

Guterres posted a message on the UN website on Sunday, the day of Easter, in which he mentioned Jewish Passover and the Muslims' holy month of Ramadan.

He wrote, "we have always known these occasions to be moments of community, of families coming together, of hugs and handshakes and the gathering of humanity."

But he added, "this is a time like no other."

Guterres called on religious leaders to "spare a special thought for heroic health workers on the front lines battling this awful virus", and "remember the most vulnerable of the vulnerable around the world".

He ended the message by writing "together, we can and will defeat this virus - with cooperation, solidarity, and faith in our common humanity."

North Korea's state-run media say the country's leader Kim Jong Un attended a politburo meeting of the ruling Workers' Party to discuss further measures against the coronavirus.

The party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said in its Sunday edition that the meeting took place on Saturday.

At the meeting, the situation in the country was reportedly described as very stable, and it was stressed that officials have taken strict "top-class" measures. The media said that the members adopted a resolution to take more measures to cope with the worldwide pandemic.

Rodong Sinmun also reported that Kim inspected an air force unit.

Kim's military inspections have been frequently reported since March. His latest moves are seen as efforts to tighten discipline in the regime.

The North had earlier announced that a key session of the Supreme People's Assembly would be held on Friday, but the media did not mention whether it had been held.

Pyongyang maintains that it has no cases of coronavirus infections. Experts are watching whether the country will hold the assembly during the global pandemic.

An advocacy group in Japan says about 40 percent of students in higher education are worried about a loss of income from part-time jobs because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The student advocacy group FREE conducted a survey of 149 people, including university and graduate students, from March 8 to April 10.

Of the respondents, 44.3 percent said they have been economically affected by the outbreak, and 37.6 percent said their income from part-time jobs has decreased.

Six point seven percent said they will not be able to pay their tuition fees.

Some respondents wrote that they cannot depend on parents, and scholarships are the only means to continue their studies. They said losing the income from part-time jobs would make their lives even more difficult.

Others said their parents' jobs have been affected by the outbreak and they might have to quit school.
