Heavy rain has continued in the parts of northeastern Japan, causing extensive flooding and raising risks of landslides.

Authorities are calling on people to be alert and to stay safe.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the rain front, fueled by warm, moist air, has been dumping rain on the Sea of Japan coast.

The city of Akita had record rainfall exceeding 250 millimeters over a 48-hour period through Sunday afternoon. Some spots in Akita prefecture have also experienced massive rainfall totaling more for a day than the average for the entire month of July.

A man who apparently called police saying he was at risk of drowning in his car has been confirmed dead. Local officers pulled him out of a vehicle that was trapped in the town of Gojome on Sunday morning.

Floods struck Akita city and its surrounding area. Several smaller rivers in the prefecture have overflowed, and some areas are under evacuation orders.

Local officials say the risk of flooding is extremely high in the upper and lower reaches of the Omono river.

The authorities have issued landslide alerts for parts of Akita, Iwate, and Yamagata prefectures.

Rain is expected to continue in northeastern Japan.

Seven more people have been confirmed dead from days of devastating floods and landslides in South Korea. The death toll from the disaster stands at 33.

Rescue workers recovered seven bodies from an underground tunnel in the central city of Cheongju where more than 10 vehicles were swamped by flooding.

Downpours have pounded wide areas from the country's west to east since Thursday, causing numerous floods and landslides.

South Korean media report cumulative rainfalls over the past four days were nearly twice as much as the total of the annual rainy season in some areas.

A government task force for disaster response says as of 11 a.m. Sunday, 10 people were missing. Altogether, 6,200 people were forced to evacuate.

Total rainfall through Tuesday is expected to reach as high as 300 millimeters in some areas.

Weather officials say overflowing rivers and landslides remain a threat.

The mercury soared in eastern and western Japan on Sunday, with the temperature topping 39 degrees Celsius in Kiryu City in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

Daytime temperatures in Kiryu reached 39.4 degrees at 1:39 p.m., the highest in the country this year. In western Tokyo's Hachioji City, they hit 38.8 degrees. Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture, and Tokorozawa City in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo recorded temperatures of 38.6 degrees.

Weather officials are urging people to take measures against heatstroke.

Greece temporarily closed its world-class tourist attraction on Friday as temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius.

Authorities in Athens briefly shut down the Acropolis Hill, home to the Parthenon temple, to protect visitors from the heatwave that is hitting Europe.

Rescue workers treated tourists who were suffering from the heat and Red Cross staff handed out bottles of water.

Local media say temperatures reached 38.8 degrees in southern Germany on Saturday.

The European Space Agency warns that Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Poland will continue to face extreme conditions. It says temperatures in Sicily in southern Italy could reach 48 degrees next week, breaking the current European record.

Officials are urging people to protect themselves from the heat.

Britain has been formally approved to join the trans-Pacific trade agreement, known as the CPTPP.

The 11 current members signed the document, giving Britain the green light, at their ministerial-level meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday.

Britain is the first country to join the pact following the original 11 members. Its accession widens the pact's economic sphere to Europe.

Britain has been in negotiations to join the trade bloc since 2021, following its departure from the European Union the year before.

After the country completes the ratification process, the pact will formally have 12 members.

The combined population of countries in the bloc will be about 580 million, representing a total GDP of around 15 trillion dollars.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed for more international assistance, saying the speed of ending the war against Russia directly depends on global support for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy released a video address after meeting South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol in Kyiv on Saturday. The Ukrainian president said he has met with many national leaders and corporate executives since the beginning of this month.

In a joint news conference after their talks, Zelenskyy thanked Yoon for visiting Ukraine. Yoon said it is important to ensure Ukraine's security and victory in the war. He revealed that South Korea has launched an initiative to help Ukraine in the military and humanitarian spheres and with post-war reconstruction.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is heading off to the Middle East for a series of meetings with leaders of oil producing nations.

Kishida leaves Tokyo on Sunday. He will visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

The visits are aimed at deepening cooperation with the three nations. Japan wants to make sure it will have stable supplies of energy in the future.

The move comes amid uncertainties in the global energy market, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and other factors.

The oil producing nations are trying to diversify their industries by introducing renewable energy sources.

The prime minister is expected to indicate that he is ready to actively support their efforts by providing Japan's de-carbonization technology.

He is also due to reiterate the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law. This is likely with Russia and China in mind.

During the tour, Kishida is scheduled to meet the secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The organization was formed by six Persian Gulf nations.

The two sides are expected to discuss the possibility of resuming talks on a free trade agreement. Negotiations have been stalled for more than a decade.

The Minami-aso Railway in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, has resumed full operations after a seven-year partial suspension following a series of powerful earthquakes.

The railway connects Takamori Station in Takamori Town and Tateno Station in Minami-aso Village. However, service on about 60 percent of the line was suspended after it was heavily damaged in the 2016 tremors.

Early Saturday, a crowd of well-wishers as well railway staff prayed for the train's safe operation in a ceremony at Takamori Station. Then, at exactly 6:00 a.m., the first train bound for Tateno Station pulled out with the crowd waving from the platform.

Passengers were able to enjoy the spectacular scenery centering on Mount Aso. They were particularly enthralled to see the view from a bridge that was rebuilt after being destroyed in the disaster.

The train reached Tateno Station at the end of the line after a 30-minute journey.

The train driver, Teramoto Akihiro, said he felt honored and that it was moving to see the railway is beloved by so many people. He added the day will remain in his heart for the remainder of his life.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has received a report from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii that a major offshore earthquake occurred at around 3:48 P.M. on Sunday Japan time.

The epicenter of the magnitude 7.3 quake was near the Alaska Peninsula in the United States.

The Agency said the quake may cause some tidal changes along Japan's coast, but it said there is no threat of damage.
