Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has wrapped up his summit meeting with the president of the United Arab Emirates after releasing a joint declaration that includes a pledge to cooperate on decarbonization.
In the talks on Monday, Kishida told President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that Japan highly values its relations with the UAE, a country that he describes as a strategic partner. He also said he wants to establish a closer personal relationship with the president.
Kishida expressed Japan's gratitude to the UAE, from which it imports nearly 40 percent of its crude oil, and called for a continued stable supply from the country.
Kishida also offered support for the UAE's industrial diversification with Japan's advanced technology in fields such as space, artificial intelligence and health care.
He sought closer diplomatic and security ties with the UAE, which, like Japan, is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The two countries signed an agreement concerning the transfer of defense equipment and technology earlier this year.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, says the launch last week of an intercontinental ballistic missile was just the beginning of the country's military offensive.
Kim issued a statement through the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Monday. This appeared to be in response to recent remarks by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. He said in an interview that aired on Sunday that the US is ready for diplomacy, but that North Korea is not.
Kim's remarks in the statement, however, suggested that Pyongyang is not ready to sit down with Washington. She said it's a "daydream" for the US to think that it can "achieve irreversible disarmament" through such measures as a temporary halt to joint military exercises and relieving sanctions.
North Korea launched the new intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-18 last Wednesday. Kim said what the US witnessed a few days ago was just the beginning of North Korea's "already-launched" military offensive.
North Korea is set to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1953 Korean War Armistice on July 27. Pyongyang sees it as a day to celebrate what it calls its victory over the US.

Senior officials from Japan, the United States and South Korea will meet in the central Japanese prefecture of Nagano on Thursday, following last week's missile launch by North Korea.
The US State Department made the announcement on Monday.
The department said that the meeting will take place in the town of Karuizawa on Thursday.
It will be attended by the head of Japan's Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Funakoshi Takehiro, US special representative for North Korea Sung Kim and Seoul's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs Kim Gunn.
The three are expected to exchange views on ways to closely cooperate in a response to North Korea, which test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile last Wednesday.
Relevant countries, including Japan, the US and South Korea, are concerned that Pyongyang may conduct more missile launches and its seventh nuclear test.

An exchange program for the Japanese Self-Defense Force and Chinese military personnel has resumed following a four-year hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The in-person program, organized by Japan's Sasakawa Peace Foundation, began about two decades ago to facilitate visits by middle-ranking personnel from Japan and China to each other's country. But it had been suspended since the last event in 2019.
A 13-member Japanese Self-Defense Force delegation visited a Chinese military-affiliated think tank in Beijing as part of a nine-day session that kicked off on Sunday.
Japanese delegates discussed bilateral issues with their Chinese counterparts and also met with Jing Jianfeng, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department of China's Central Military Commission.
Jing said there are difficult issues between the countries, but he stressed that China hopes to continue interactions that look at the big pictures.
The Japanese group is also scheduled to visit military facilities and troops in locations including Qingdao, Shandong province and Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
Officials said arrangements are underway for a Chinese delegation to visit Japan as early as September.
Sasakawa Peace Foundation executive Adachi Itsu said it's important to create an opportunity for dialogue whenever a problem arises between the two countries. Adachi added that both sides should be committed to building better bilateral ties.

Japan's largest construction equipment maker Komatsu has said it will launch an electric model of its mainstay excavator in Japan and Europe.
Komatsu said it jointly developed the 20-ton-class machine with US-based Proterra.
The company said its performance is on par with its engine-powered hydraulic shovels and it can run for about eight hours when fully charged. It makes little noise and zero emissions or vibrations so it is easier for workers to operate.
"This is the Komatsu's first step toward carbon neutrality. We would like to do our best to expand sales and raise the level of our products," a company official said.
Komatsu said sales could start as early as October.

Japanese Actor Suzuki Ryohei has won the Screen International Rising Star award at the New York Asian Film Festival for his performance in the gay romance drama "Egoist."
The approximately two-week event, which started on Friday, showcases more than 60 films from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia and others.
Suzuki played the main character - a gay person navigating his relationship with his lover and the lover's mother - in the film that was screened on Saturday.
Suzuki said at the award ceremony that it was a great honor to receive the award, especially in New York, a city he loves.
He said the film is special for him and he thanked all the people who were involved in making it.
Suzuki said it is still difficult to come out about one's sexual orientation in Japan, and that the society and the film industry can move forward by making more sexual minority-themed films.
He said he believes that "Egoist" was a huge step for the film industry.

Spectators have packed the streets of the ancient Japanese city of Kyoto to see the highlight of the traditional Gion Festival -- a procession of ornately decorated floats.
The parade of 23 floats began on Monday morning. People applauded during the procession when a child in a traditional costume on the lead float used a sword to cut a sacred rope stretched across a main street.
The floats negotiated right-angle turns at intersections. Wet bamboo sticks laid beneath their wheels helped with the turns.
The festival is said to have begun more than 1,000 years ago to pray for an end to a plague. The procession is held on July 17 every year, but it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
One boy who lives in the city says the floats are dynamic and impressive.
Police say about 150,000 people came to see the parade despite the scorching heat. Temperatures reached as high as 37.7 degrees Celsius.
