The whereabouts of China's foreign minister, Qin Gang, has been a source of mystery both inside and outside Beijing. He has been out of the public eye for a month. Now, he has been ousted from his job without explanation from Chinese leaders.
Qin was last seen in public on June 25 in a meeting with counterparts from overseas. Officials at first said he was suffering from health problems before claiming that they had no other information to offer.
On Tuesday, the decision-making body of the National People's Congress appointed his predecessor, Wang Yi, to take over the post.
All mention of Qin from the foreign ministry's website has been scrubbed, and his profile page is blank.
Qin formerly served as China's ambassador to the US and met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Beijing on June 18.
US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said his absence will not derail efforts to forge closer ties with Beijing.
Patel said, "We will continue to engage with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other Chinese officials and we continue to believe that keeping lines of communication are incredibly important."
He added that decisions about leadership roles in China are an internal matter.
Qin was said to be one of President Xi Jinping's most trusted officials. However, rumors have been swirling about his personal life, and some observers suspect that the accusations were planted by rivals.
Korogi Ichiro, a professor at Kanda University of International Studies said, "Qin had a quick rise to the position of foreign minister, and his appointment over more experienced candidates may have caused some jealousy."
Korogi also said that the episode highlights a lack of transparency in Chinese politics and adds to the uncertainty gripping leaders in Beijing.

Human rights experts from the United Nations have interviewed four people who say they were sexually abused by Johnny Kitagawa, the late founder of Japanese talent agency Johnny & Associates.
The four former performers said they met with experts from the UN working group on business and human rights in Tokyo on Tuesday.
They did not disclose the details of the interview, which they said lasted about two hours.
The agency Johnny Kitagawa established is known for its male pop stars. The issue resurfaced after his death in 2019.
The UN experts are expected to hold a news conference in Tokyo on August 4, when they wrap up their stay in Japan.
Ishimaru Shimon, one of the four, said the experts looked them in the eye as they listened to their accounts and gave thoughtful responses.
Ishimaru also said he thinks each of the four conveyed their own thoughts, and that he believes the experts understood the importance of the issue.

The population of Japanese nationals has fallen for a 14th straight year.
The internal affairs ministry compiled the country's population using the Basic Resident Register.
The population stood at over 122.42 million on January 1. That's down about 800,000 from the previous year, and the biggest drop since record-taking began in 1968.
The number of births last year totaled about 771,000, the lowest since the survey began in 1979, while the number of deaths was a record high of over 1.56 million.
Natural population decline, which is calculated by deducting the number of births from the number of deaths, has increased for 15 years in a row.
By prefecture, Tokyo was the most populous with about 13.26 million. Tottori had the smallest population of about 541,000.
Population decreased in all 47 prefectures for the first time.
The number of foreign residents of Japan stood at more than 2.99 million. It was the first rise in three years, and the highest since the survey began in 2013. The numbers rose in all prefectures.
Key words : thailand next prime

Thailand is still without a new prime minister more than two months after opposition parties scored a stunning victory in a general election.
The second-largest party has held talks with the current ruling parties on ways to break the ongoing political deadlock.
Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew sat down with representatives of the military-backed Phalang Pracharat and four other parties at the weekend.
Cholnan broached the idea of a coalition, but the ruling camp opposes any government framework that includes the leading Move Forward Party.
Move Forward has proposed watering down the strict lese majeste law, which criminalizes criticism of the royal family.
It came first in the May election and aimed to form a government with seven other opposition parties.
But party leader Pita Limjaroenrat failed to win enough support from the military-appointed senators to become prime minister.
Parliament then passed a motion blocking him from standing for that post in a second vote.
Move Forward said last week it would step aside and let Pheu Thai take the lead in coalition talks.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on Sunday in downtown Bangkok to voice their anger at the senators who denied Pita the top job.
One said she wants the next prime minister to be someone chosen by the people.
The rally came amid speculation that Pheu Thai will form a government without Move Forward. Protesters called for the opposition camp to show unity so a democratic government can be created.
The next vote for prime minister is expected on Thursday.
