Japanese government sources say arrangements are underway for Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to participate in a summit next month with US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The meeting will reportedly be held at the Camp David presidential retreat near Washington.
Kishida will likely visit the US for three days from August 18. Japanese, US and South Korean officials are working to finalize the schedule.
Although Kishida, Biden and Yoon have held trilateral talks on the sidelines of international conferences, this will be their first stand-alone summit.
The leaders are expected to discuss how to respond to North Korea's repeated launches of ballistic missiles.
It's anticipated they will strengthen security cooperation, including early activation of a data-sharing mechanism to exchange real-time missile warning data among the countries' defense authorities.
They are also expected to discuss economic security as well as Washington's "extended deterrence," which refers to its commitment to defend its allies with nuclear weapons and other capabilities.
Japan-US and Japan-South Korea summits are also expected.

Japan reinstated South Korea on Friday to its list of countries with preferential trade status, allowing for simplified export procedures.
In August 2019, the government had excluded South Korea from the list, citing deficiencies in the country's trade control system.
In the same year, the government also tightened export controls to South Korea for three materials used for the production of semiconductors and displays. Tokyo lifted the strict controls in March.
Under the preferential status, most of the items that were subject to strict controls no longer need export permits per contract.
The items include machine tools, which are believed to be at high risk of being diverted for military use.
Earlier this month, Tokyo and Seoul signed a memorandum to hold director-level policy talks periodically on their export control systems.
They said that if there are any problems, they will hold dialogue and decide what actions should be taken.

Thailand's parliament will hold a second prime ministerial vote next week.
On Wednesday the nomination of Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the main opposition party, was blocked.
Now, the second-largest Pheu Thai party is gearing up for fielding its candidate.
Parliament passed a motion to indicate Pita was not eligible to run for election. It was submitted by conservative lawmakers, who said a second nomination would violate regulations.
Pita has been calling for progressive reforms, including the amendment of the lese majeste law and elimination of military influence in politics.
Conservative lawmakers, including the senate selected under the military government, have responded sharply to such challenges.
Pita himself intended to step aside and allow Pheu Thai to nominate its candidate if he failed to win a majority or expand his support base.
Pheu Thai is affiliated with ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. A party official has stated publicly it will nominate real-estate tycoon, Srettha Thavisin, as its candidate.
But Pheu Thai needs to gain support from conservatives.
So now the focus is on whether Pheu Thai will keep pushing to form a coalition with Move Forward and other parties or join hands with conservative parties and exclude Move Forward.
The next vote is scheduled to take place on July 27th.
