Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is on his way home from his tour of Europe. After his return, he is expected to seek further involvement from European countries in the Indo-Pacific region to bolster regional deterrence.

Kishida traveled to Poland, Lithuania and Belgium on a four-day visit through Friday.

In Lithuania, he attended a NATO summit and reaffirmed Japan's commitment to supporting Ukraine. He also called for cooperation to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law.

Japan and NATO issued a new cooperation document aimed at jointly addressing security challenges, with Russia and China in mind.

In Belgium, Kishida met leaders of the European Union. The EU announced the lifting of import restrictions on certain Japanese food products, which were introduced after the 2011 nuclear accident in Fukushima Prefecture.

The two sides also issued a joint statement to step up cooperation in various areas, including security.

The Chinese government says it will enforce measures to regulate generative artificial intelligence services, starting on August 15.

The government said on Thursday that texts, images, videos and other AI-produced contents for people in China must reflect the country's core socialist values.

It also said the contents must exclude subversive material and expressions that are discriminatory or infringe on privacy.

It added that service providers must delete illicit contents and stop their spread. Violators will be punished and could even be held criminally liable.

Chinese authorities have already been rigorously regulating online services. In 2017, major IT company Tencent had to suspend its AI chatbots after they apparently criticized the Chinese Communist Party.

Meanwhile, Beijing is encouraging the use of generative AI in a range of areas. Companies such as IT giants Baidu and Alibaba Group are accelerating competition to develop generative artificial intelligence services.

Lawmakers in Thailand voted for a new prime minister, but the sole candidate failed to secure enough votes.

The leader of the progressive Move Forward Party, Pita Limjaroenrat, was the only nominee for the top job in Thursday's voting, after opposition parties scored a stunning victory in May's general election.

Pita needed support from more than half of the 750-seat bicameral parliament, but he fell short by 51 votes.

Earlier, some conservative lawmakers criticized Pita in the pre-voting debate over his party's campaign pledge to amend the royal defamation law.

One lawmaker said that amending the royal law would "only create conflict and division in Thai society and impact on Thai people's feelings."

Legal challenges are also looming. On the eve of the vote, the Constitutional Court accepted a complaint against Pita, alleging he held shares in a media company despite the constitution banning lawmakers from doing so.

Hundreds of Pita's supporters gathered near parliament ahead of the voting. They wore orange, the color of his party, and called on lawmakers to vote for Pita.

As Pita couldn't secure enough votes on Thursday, the House Speaker set dates for another round of voting in the next week.
