Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is leaving for Europe to attend a NATO summit.

Kishida starts his four-day European tour on Tuesday. His itinerary includes a visit to Lithuania, which is hosting the NATO gathering.

This will be Kishida's second participation in a NATO summit, following his attendance last year. He will likely stress that Japan is ready to play an active role in addressing the situation in Ukraine, based on the achievements it made at the G7 Hiroshima summit.

Kishida is expected to call for closer cooperation between Japan and the alliance, based on the belief that the security of Europe and that of the Indo-Pacific region are inseparable. Russia's relations with China have grown warmer since its invasion of Ukraine.
Arrangements are underway for talks between Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

Kishida wants to explain to Yoon Japan's plan to release treated and diluted water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

Kishida may also meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to express Japan's readiness to continue providing support to Ukraine.

Kishida's tour will also take him to Belgium, where he is scheduled to meet EU leaders. Kishida and his EU counterparts are expected to release a joint statement, which would include a plan for Japan to expand security cooperation.

The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says US forces will face grave consequences if they continue to stage reconnaissance flights over the North's economic zone.

Kim Yo Jong's comments on Tuesday said that in case of repeated illegal intrusions, US forces will experience what she called "a very critical flight."

The statement carried by the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said a US reconnaissance plane illegally intruded into the country's maritime economic zone eight times from around 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday.

Kim Yo Jong issued a similar statement on Monday night accusing US forces of intrusion and warning of possible countermeasures.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that Pyongyang may be trying to raise tensions ahead of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice on July 27.

North Korea commemorates the date as what it calls its victory over the United States.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to support the Solomon Islands without any political conditions during a meeting with the nation's prime minister.

Xi met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare in Beijing on Monday.

Xi described the two countries as "trustworthy friends and reliable brothers" during the talks, according to China's foreign minister. The Solomon Islands severed ties with Taiwan in 2019 and established diplomatic relations with China.

Xi also assured Sogavare that China supports more of its businesses investing in the Solomon Islands and will continue to provide economic and technical assistance to the nation with no political strings attached.

Sogavare reportedly told Xi that it was the right decision to establish diplomatic ties with Beijing, calling China a "trustworthy partner" who helps his nation's development.

The United States has lately taken a range of steps to deepen its involvement in the South Pacific. In February, the country opened an embassy in the Solomon Islands.

Observers say the move by the US prompted Beijing to take further action to expand its influence in the region.

The turmoil in Myanmar will be high on the agenda as top diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations begin a round of talks in Indonesia on Tuesday.

The first two days of discussions in Jakarta bring together the foreign ministers of ASEAN member nations. The top diplomats of other countries, including Japan, the US and China, will join them later in the week.

The meetings come as the implementation of the "Five-Point Consensus" on Myanmar remains largely stalled. The plan, agreed on by ASEAN members in the presence of Myanmar's military leader, calls for an immediate end to the violence and for an ASEAN envoy to mediate dialogue between the junta and prodemocracy groups.

Indonesia holds ASEAN's rotating chairmanship this year. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who has been intensely engaging Myanmar stakeholders, says it's time to take the next step forward.

The ASEAN foreign ministers will meet with their counterparts from Japan, China and South Korea on Thursday to discuss maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and other issues.

On the final day of talks on Friday, delegations from the US, China and Russia will join discussions on issues relating to the South China Sea and Ukraine.

Lawmakers in Thailand vote for a new prime minister this week. The leading Move Forward Party and its supporters rallied in Bangkok on Sunday ahead of the key decision.

Hundreds of people gathered to show their backing for Move Forward's leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, to become Thailand's next premier. Attention is focused on how senators -- handpicked by the military -- will vote.

Pita said, "Everyone -- all 750 parliamentarians -- has the chance to return normalcy to Thai politics."

The vote is set for Thursday. A candidate needs a majority in both chambers to become prime minister.

The progressive Move Forward and seven other coalition parties have more than half the seats in the Lower House. But it's unclear how the senators will cast their ballots.

The 42-year-old Pita wants to remove the military's influence from Thai politics. He urged lawmakers to respect voters' choice. His supporters echoed that call.

A male student said lawmakers should "show respect for democracy and help move Thailand forward."

A female pharmacist said she believes the senators will listen to the people.

Pita and his party's officials say they have enough support. But observers see the situation as uncertain.
Many members of the Upper House have been reluctant to show their hand.

Many Japanese soldiers fought on the side of Indonesia in its struggle for independence from Dutch rule. Now, a gallery commemorating that historical chapter has opened in Jakarta.

A ceremony to mark its launch was held on Monday, attended by descendants of the soldiers. The gallery's exhibits include pictures, medals given to the fighters by the Japanese and Indonesian governments and witnesses' written records.

Some 1,000 Japanese troops chose to stay in Indonesia after World War Two and fight for its freedom. The last one of them died in 2014. Family members came up with the idea of honoring their contribution with the gallery and collected donations for it.

Aritomo Dwi Laksono, grandson of a former Imperial Japanese Army soldier, said: " This is what we want to tell people. They chose to become Indonesian citizens and fought for Indonesia's independence."

Descendants of the soldiers hope the gallery will help pass on their story to future generations.

The governing body of Formula One racing has decided to hold the 2024 Japan Grand Prix in the spring, instead of autumn.

The change is aimed at helping Formula One achieve its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

The race at Suzuka Circuit is usually held between September and November. Next year, it is slated for April. That will be the fourth leg of the tour, sandwiched between races in Australia and China. The three countries are relatively close to each other.

The F1 organizer reportedly proposed the date change to eliminate unnecessary travel and reduce emissions from logistics.
