Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force has test-fired a surface-to-ship missile in an exercise with the Australian military.

The GSDF has been taking part in a multinational drill that started in Australia on Thursday.

The GSDF conducted a live-firing of a Type-12 anti-ship missile off the southern Australian coast of Jervis Bay on Saturday.

The training scenario targeted a small ship that had been located by Japanese and Australian drones. Officials say the missile hit the target.

The Type-12 missile currently has a range of close to 200 kilometers.

The Japanese Defense Ministry plans to extend the range to about 1,000 kilometers. The missile is regarded as a possible candidate to give Japan counterstrike capabilities to hit an opponent's missile bases and other targets.

This is the first time a Japanese-developed Type-12 missile was fired in training in Australia. The drill was apparently aimed at demonstrating cooperation between Japan and Australia at a time when China is stepping up its maritime activities.

Russia's defense ministry has confirmed that a state news agency reporter was killed in a cluster bomb attack carried out by Ukraine.

The ministry said a group of Russian journalists came under fire in Zaporizhzhia on Saturday, with one left dead and three others wounded.

Zaporizhzhia is in southern Ukraine, where parts of the region are under Russian control.

The ministry said cluster munitions were used but did not provide specific evidence.

The United States had recently sent cluster bombs to Ukraine, and a US official said on Thursday that Ukraine had begun using them.

Konstantin Kosachev, the deputy speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament, criticized Ukraine in a social media post. He called the use of cluster munitions inhumane.

He criticized authorities in Washington and Kyiv, saying their assurances that such ammunition would not be used on non-combatants turned out to be pure lies.

The US has long accused Russia of having used cluster bombs on battle fields.

US-based Human Rights Watch said in May that Russian forces had used the weapons in attacks that caused hundreds of civilian casualties, while also damaging homes, hospitals and schools.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned that his country reserves the right to reciprocate when Ukraine uses cluster munitions.

More than 2,000 people including tourists have evacuated from the Greek island of Rhodes due to a raging wildfire, as a heatwave is sweeping across parts of southern Europe.

The wildfire started on Tuesday amid high temperatures. It's been spreading, fanned by strong winds.

Local media say at least three hotels were damaged and tourists are evacuating by ship.

Images taken on Saturday show people gathered at a beach and suitcases being brought onto boats.

Coast guard and navy vessels, as well as more than 20 private boats, are helping the operation.

The Greek fire department says that more than 170 firefighters aided with helicopters are battling the blaze but it is not yet under control.

Wildfires were also reported near Athens and elsewhere in Greece this week.

Reuters news agency says the Greek authorities are warning of a very high risk of more wildfires as the temperatures are expected to rise to 45 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The number of Filipino nurses seeking work in Japan has hit a record low at a recruitment event in the Philippines. This appears to reflect the weaker yen amid severe global competition to secure healthcare workers.

Japan has been accepting nurses from the Philippines since 2009 under an economic partnership agreement. More than 660 Filipino nurses have worked in Japan under the program.

Booths were set up in the capital of Manila on Saturday to interview candidates for the next fiscal year. The event was held for the first time in four years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But there were only 17 people seeking to work as nurses in Japan -- an all-time low since the program began.

With low wages in the Philippines, about one-third of the country's certified-nurses seek overseas work.

As Western nations struggle to secure healthcare workers, it is believed Japan is unpopular with Filipino nurses because of the weaker yen that would shrink their income. The language barrier was also a factor.

A recruiter from a medical facility in Japan's northeastern prefecture of Miyagi was shocked that there were so few applicants. The facility has been accepting Filipino nurses for about ten years.

One applicant with 6 years of nursing experience in Saudi Arabia said he wants to work in Japan to learn a different culture and its tradition, and to become proficient with high-tech medical equipment.

A summer festival featuring traditional Japanese dancing has been held near the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. The event attracted about 40,000 people.

A Bon Festival has been organized by Japanese residents and other groups every summer since 1977. The festival is said to be one of the largest of its kind outside Japan.

This year's event took place on Saturday. Locals and Japanese nationals danced around an elevated platform and enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

A 21-year-old man said that it was really fun to see performers playing drums, while visitors danced around them. He also said he enjoyed experiencing a new culture.

Malaysia promoted bilateral exchanges through its "Look East" policy. It also encouraged Malaysians to learn about Japanese technology. Japan's Ambassador Takahashi Katsuhiko said he feels that the Bon dance festival has taken root in Malaysia.

He also said that it is important to expand and deepen the relationship between the countries. Takahashi added that Japan wants to cooperate with Malaysia on issues, such as security and climate change.
