Nobel Peace Prize laureate Yunus to head Bangladeshi interim government
Bangladesh's presidential office says Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus will head the country's interim government after Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister.
Hasina resigned on Monday after a police crackdown against nationwide protests over government job quotas left scores of people dead. The protests by students and others began in July.
After her resignation, President Mohammed Shahabuddin decided to launch an interim government until elections could be held. He held talks with representatives from the military, opposition parties and the students.
As a result, the presidential office announced that Yunus would lead the interim government as the chief adviser.
Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank, which provides small loans to impoverished people. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
Relations between him and the Bangladeshi government have reportedly been strained since he expressed his intention to enter politics.
In January, he was convicted of labor law violations, a verdict his supporters criticized as politically motivated.
In the discussions to form an interim government, the house arrest of an opposition party leader, who was detained under the Hasina administration, was lifted.
The interim leaders appear to be aiming to swiftly establish a government that can gain broad public understanding.

Tension runs high in Middle East 10 months after Gaza fighting started
Ten months after fighting broke out in the Gaza Strip, tension is running high in the Middle East as Iran and Israel threaten each other following the killing of a top Hamas leader in Iran.
Iran says it is determined to avenge the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran a week ago. The country blames Israel for the killing.
Observers say militants supported by Iran may also join a possible attack against Israel.
Iran aims to win the backing of other Muslim countries at an emergency foreign ministers' meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation scheduled for Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said its response is coming and would be strong, impactful and effective. The Lebanon-based Shia Muslim group is backed by Iran.
Local media reported on the same day that a drone attack by Hezbollah wounded 19 people in northern Israel.
Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant inspected an air force unit on Tuesday, and said that with every day that passes, Israeli forces enhance their readiness for defense and sharpen their offensive capabilities.
In the Gaza Strip, Israel's military is stepping up its offensives in Khan Younis and elsewhere.
Health authorities in Gaza said on Tuesday that the death toll had reached 39,653.

US engages in diplomacy to ease Middle East tensions
The United States is engaged in diplomacy to prevent conflicts in the Middle East from expanding.
The White House announced that President Joe Biden called Jordan's King Abdullah on Monday and discussed their efforts to deescalate regional tensions.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has described the situation in the Middle East as a critical moment.
In a meeting at the US State Department on Monday, he said, "All parties must refrain from escalation." He also said "escalation is not in anyone's interests" and "will only lead to more conflict, more violence and more insecurity."
Blinken noted that it's critical to break the cycle by reaching a ceasefire in Gaza. He reiterated all parties should aim to reach an agreement through negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The moves come as Iran blames Israel for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh during a visit to Iran on July 31 and is showing signs of retaliating against Israel. A militant group backed by Iran is also thought to join a possible attack.
Iran is approaching Muslim countries to seek understanding for its response.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani told reporters on Monday that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is expected to convene a meeting at the level of foreign ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday at Iran's request.
The OIC has 57 members in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. It has exchanged views about the conflict in Gaza and condemned Israel.
Iran is expected to seek understanding from Islamic states over its expected retaliation against Israel.

US charges Pakistani man tied to alleged plot to kill US politician or official
The US Justice Department says it has charged a Pakistani national with murder-for-hire as part of an alleged plot to assassinate a US politician or government official in the United States. The scheme was foiled by law enforcement.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said the plot "allegedly was orchestrated by a Pakistani national with close ties to Iran and is straight out of the Iranian playbook."
In a statement on Tuesday, the Justice Department said Asif Merchant, who is 46 years old, has been prosecuted.
The suspect allegedly tried to hire assassins after entering the US from Pakistan last April.
In June, the suspect allegedly paid 5,000 dollars as an advance payment to would-be assassins he met in New York.
The statement said the purported assassins were in fact undercover US law enforcement officers. It added that Merchant was arrested when he was about to leave the US last month.
Merchant allegedly said he has a wife and children in Iran.
The statement did not identify those targeted in the scheme.
ABC News reported that it was told by multiple sources that one of the intended targets was former US President Donald Trump.

Paris ceremony mourns Israelis killed in 1972 Munich Games
A memorial ceremony was held in Paris to honor the 11 Israelis killed in a terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics 52 years ago. But city residents were divided about the event due to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
In September 1972, armed Palestinian extremists attacked Israelis at apartments in the Olympic Village, killing an athlete and a coach. Nine Israeli hostages were also killed in gun battles between the terrorists and the police.
The memorial event was held on Tuesday at the Israeli Embassy in Paris. More than 100 people, including bereaved family members, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Israeli athletes, took part.
After prayers were offered to the victims, bereaved family members and other representatives lit 11 candles, the same number of those killed in the incident.
At the Paris Olympics, some spectators booed at Israeli athletes and national anthem against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Ambassador to France Joshua Zarka said in his address that the current situation seems to overlap with the incident 52 years ago.
He also raised concerns that Israeli Olympians are not being recognized nor celebrated due to their nationality.
At the Paris Games, some spectators have booed Israeli athletes amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. That fighting continues to be in the minds of some in Paris.
A French resident said, "We shouldn't forget about the other victims too, including Palestinians."
One Israeli gold medalist expressed hope at the ceremony that the spirit of the Olympics will take over and show that friendship and peace is possible.
