Tim Walz accepts US Democratic Party's vice presidential nomination

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz accepted the US Democratic Party's nomination for vice president in a speech at the party's national convention on Wednesday.

Walz -- whom Vice President Kamala Harris picked as her running mate in her bid to become president -- spoke on the third day of the convention underway in Chicago.

Walz said, "It is the honor of my life to accept your nomination for vice president of the United States."
He said, "We're all here tonight for one beautiful, simple reason -- we love this country."

Walz has been presenting himself as a candidate that voters can relate to with his middle-class upbringing and small-town roots.
The Democratic Party hopes Walz will help Harris win wider support from the white working class.

But Walz was little known to the US public before Harris picked him as her running mate following President Joe Biden's abrupt decision last month not to run for a second term.

Walz hopes the speech at the widely watched convention will help introduce his character and ideas to the wider US public.

Among those who spoke at the convention leading up to Walz's speech was former US President Bill Clinton.

Clinton said, "Kamala Harris is the only candidate in this race who has the vision, the experience, the temperament, the will, and the sheer joy to get something done. We need Kamala Harris, the president of joy, to lead us."

Trump holds first outdoor rally since assassination attempt

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has held an outdoor campaign rally for the first time since he survived an assassination attempt last month.

The former president cancelled outdoor rallies in the wake of the incident for safety reasons. Instead, he appeared at indoor events.

But Trump wanted to hold his campaign rallies outside because they can accommodate larger crowds.

After obtaining approval from the Secret Service, he appeared on stage at an outdoor venue in North Carolina on Wednesday.

He stood behind and in front of bulletproof glass with snipers positioned on surrounding rooftops as part of heightened security precautions.
Trump criticized the Biden administration, saying Israel would have never been attacked if he had been president.

He also referred to comments made by former President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention the previous day.

Trump asked his supporters if they saw Obama and his wife Michelle taking shots at him. He said, "They're getting personal all night long" and described Obama as being "very nasty."

Trump has been on the campaign trail this week, holding rallies every day in swing states.

US presidential candidate Kennedy to address nation on future plans

ABC News and other US media outlets are reporting that independent US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to drop out of the race and endorse Republican former President Donald Trump.

The reports follow an announcement by Kennedy's campaign on Wednesday that he will address the nation about "his path forward" on Friday in Arizona. Kennedy is a nephew of former US President John F. Kennedy.

Trump indicated on Tuesday that he would probably consider appointing Kennedy to a role in his administration if the independent candidate drops out of the race and Trump is reelected as president.

Attention is focused on Kennedy's move as he was seen as a candidate who could affect the outcome of the election by appealing to supporters from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Biden presses Netanyahu on Gaza ceasefire deal

US President Joe Biden has pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the need to quickly achieve a ceasefire and release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.

The White House released a written summary of Biden's telephone call with Netanyahu on Wednesday.

It said, "The President stressed the urgency of bringing the ceasefire and hostage-release deal to closure."

Negotiators have been struggling to close the remaining gaps between Israel and Hamas. Hamas has expressed opposition to what it says are conditions favorable to Israel that have been added in the latest proposal.
Media reports say the next round of negotiations will be held in Egypt--one of the mediating countries--on Thursday and Friday.

The White House statement said Biden and Netanyahu "discussed upcoming talks in Cairo to remove any remaining obstacles."

Meanwhile, the US Central Command on Wednesday said the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the Middle East.

This comes as Iran says it will retaliate against Israel, which it blames for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month.

The carrier strike group's deployment is apparently aimed at strengthening US support for Israel's defense and to keep Iran in check.

Newly launched Iran Cabinet gets off to tough start

Iran's parliament on Wednesday approved all members of the Cabinet's ministers proposed by President Masoud Pezeshkian. The approval came after days of deliberations. Pezeshkian took office last month.

State media quoted Pezeshkian as saying at the first Cabinet meeting that his administration has made a promise with the people and will stick to it until the end.

Abbas Araghchi was approved as the minister of foreign affairs. He has served as an ambassador to Japan. He also played a key role in negotiating Tehran's 2015 nuclear agreement with six world powers.

The Pezeshkian administration has expressed readiness to try to improve relations with the West in a bid to have economic sanctions lifted.

But Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei earlier vowed to take revenge on Israel over the killing of a Hamas political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran in July.

Iran has indicated it will decide on the timing and method of retaliation after seeing how the talks progress between Israel and Hamas on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

If Iran retaliates, it is certain to spark a backlash from Western countries. The new Cabinet is treading rough waters as tensions run high in the region.

Russian PM meets Chinese premier amid Ukraine's cross-border offensive

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin held talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Moscow on Wednesday.
Mishustin criticized Western economic sanctions and stressed the importance of increasing bilateral cooperation.

Mishustin said Western countries are imposing what he called illegitimate sanctions and trying to contain the economic and technological potential of Russia and China.

He added that it is important to concentrate efforts on protecting their common interests and strengthening coordination on international platforms.

Li said China hopes to maintain mutually beneficial ties with Russia and step up multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.

Li later met Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia's economic dependence on China is growing as Western countries continue to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Trade between the two countries last year reached about 240 billion dollars -- a record high.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's military continues its cross-border operation in Russia's western region of Kursk.

Russia's state-run Tass news agency on Wednesday quoted a health official as saying the civilian death toll in Ukraine's offensive on Kursk has reached 31, while 143 people have been injured.

Russia's Central Election Commission postponed voting in local assembly and other elections in seven districts in the Kursk region, including Sudzha, which the Ukrainian military claims to have captured. The votes were scheduled for September 8. The commission said the safety of residents cannot be guaranteed.

Officials say the gubernatorial election in Kursk will take place as planned.

Fuel debris removal test postponed at crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, on Thursday morning suspended preparatory work for the test retrieval of nuclear fuel debris from one of the reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The suspension came after an issue was found with the installation of a removal device.

The plant operator has been planning the test retrieval of nuclear fuel debris from one of the plant's reactors that suffered meltdowns in 2011.

TEPCO says the preparations will not resume within the day. It is expected to reschedule the process.

It is the first attempt to take out fuel debris in the 13 and a half years since an earthquake and tsunami triggered the meltdowns. It is believed that the test results will likely affect the future process of reactor decommissioning work.

Japanese nationals taken into protective custody in Cambodia

The Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh says 12 Japanese nationals have been taken into protective custody in southeastern Cambodia.

The embassy says the dozen people were placed in protection by local authorities in the city of Bavet on August 3 and 7.

Sources say the 12 entered Cambodia after being promised highly paid, easy jobs and that they may have been forced to get involved in phone scams.

Local authorities are searching for the individual or individuals who recruited the 12.

In recent years, Cambodia has seen a number of cases in which people overseas are lured to the country by scam groups through social media and forced to join their operation after their passports and smartphones are confiscated.

The embassy has been calling for caution.

Japanese, Taiwanese ruling parties agree to cooperate for Taiwan Strait security

Lawmakers from ruling political parties in Japan and Taiwan have agreed to cooperate for peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait with China in mind, which is stepping up hegemonic actions.

Members of Japan's main governing Liberal Democratic Party and Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party held talks on their areas of expertise in diplomacy and defense in Tokyo on Wednesday.

It is the first such talks held between Japan and Taiwan after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te took office in May.

An attendee from the LDP stressed the importance of cooperation between Japan and Taiwan as he says the security environment in East Asia is becoming increasingly severe.

A delegate from the DPP said in response that China's increasing military pressure in the East and South China seas, and the Taiwan Strait, is a serious issue for the security of Taiwan and Japan.

The two sides agreed to work together for peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait without allowing any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force or intimidation.

They also confirmed that they will continue to exchange information to tackle cyberattacks.

Japanese drugmaker employee indicted in China

A Japanese businessman has been indicted in China after about 17 months of detention.

The man in his 50s is an employee of Japan's Astellas Pharma. He was detained in Beijing in March last year by security authorities for his alleged involvement in espionage.

In March this year, prosecutors started procedures to decide whether to indict the man.

The Japanese Embassy in Beijing says it has been informed that the man was indicted in mid-August.

The charges that he will face have not been revealed. The schedule for hearings has not been disclosed either.

The Japanese government has been calling for an early release of the man. But his detention may drag on.

The Japanese Embassy says it will continue to urge Chinese authorities to release him.

A number of foreign nationals have been detained in China on spy charges since the country introduced an anti-espionage law in 2014.
