Japan marks 79 years since atomic bombing of Nagasaki
Japan is commemorating 79 years since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki during World War Two. The city will honor the tens of thousands of victims in an annual ceremony, with representatives from around the world in attendance. But there will be some noticeable absences among foreign diplomats.
An updated list of victims will be placed at the memorial site as part of the ceremony. It includes the names of survivors who died in the last twelve months. The number of deceased now stands at 198,785.
The city will observe a moment of silence at 11:02 a.m., the exact time the bomb exploded on August 9th,1945.
Mayor Suzuki Shiro will also deliver a declaration of peace. He's expected to call on world leaders to seek diplomatic solutions amid the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Ambassadors from Group of Seven nations, including the United States, France and Britain, will not be attending. That's after Suzuki opted not to invite the ambassador of Israel. He says the decision was not political, but aimed at ensuring a calm and solemn atmosphere on Friday.

Japan PM Kishida: 'Nagasaki must be the last place to suffer an atomic bombing'
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has called on the world to "make Nagasaki the last place to suffer an atomic bombing" at a memorial ceremony in the city.
Friday marks 79 years since Nagasaki was devastated by an atomic attack, just three days after an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
In his address, Kishida said the tragedy experienced by the two cities should never be repeated.
He said working toward a "world without nuclear weapons" through consistent and practical efforts is Japan's mission as the only nation to have suffered wartime atomic bombings.
Kishida said his call for making Nagasaki the last place to suffer an atomic bombing is all the more significant today because the environment surrounding nuclear disarmament is becoming increasingly severe amid divisions in the global community over reducing arms along with nuclear threats by Russia.
He stressed that Japan will take the initiative to lead the international community in nuclear disarmament efforts while maintaining the country's Three Non-Nuclear Principles.
He added that his country will work hard to achieve meaningful results at the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. For that purpose, he said Japan will continue its efforts to find concrete measures for both nuclear and non-nuclear countries.
Kishida also said it is essential to convey the realities of the atomic bombings to people around the world and to gain their correct understanding for taking such measures, including plans to encourage young people from other countries to visit the sites of the atomic bombings.

The US State Department has indicated that there has been no change in the United States' position on remembering the victims of the atomic bombings in Japan during World War Two.
In a news conference on Thursday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller commented on the decision by US ambassador Rahm Emanuel not to attend Friday's ceremony in Nagasaki because the Israeli ambassador was not invited to the event.
The US Embassy in Japan said Emanuel conveyed to the Nagasaki mayor that the city's decision not to invite the Israeli ambassador was political.
Miller said it was important that the Israeli ambassador be invited as the ambassadors of other countries have been. He said, "No country should have been singled out to not be invited" adding that was presumably the reason why Emanuel took the step that he did.
Miller also referred to the US ambassador's attendance at the ceremony in Hiroshima on Tuesday. He said the US position on events commemorating the atomic bombings and "our respect for Japan when it comes to this anniversary is well documented and goes beyond -- far beyond the ambassador not attending one event."

Japanese authorities are urging people in a wide section of the country to take precautions against a possible mega-earthquake.
They have issued a special advisory for the first time. This comes after a powerful quake rocked Kyushu on Thursday.
The advisory is part of a precautionary measure being taken against a possible mega earthquake. The measure is known as the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information protocol.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says there is a relatively high possibility that a giant earthquake will strike the area where the Nankai Trough is located. If a large-scale earthquake occurs in the future, strong tremors and large tsunami are expected. While the possibility is now higher than usual, the agency notes this does not mean that something will definitely occur during a certain period of time.
A magnitude 7.1 quake struck southwestern Japan on Thursday, and more tremors hit the area through Friday. Experts note that seismic activity remains high.
The Meteorological Agency is urging municipalities in the region that extends from the areas around Tokyo to those in southern Okinawa Prefecture to check their earthquake preparedness.
Officials are advising people to secure pieces of furniture, so that they will not fall. The authorities are also advising people to make note of evacuate sites and ways to confirm that family members are safe. They say households with infants, seniors or handicapped members should consider evacuating voluntarily.
Experts believe that the Nankai Trough quake could occur along the plate boundary between Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture and the Hyuganada Sea off Kyushu. They believe there is a 70 to 80 percent chance that it will strike within the next three decades and have a magnitude in the range of 8 to 9.
According to a recent government estimate, in the worst-case scenario, it could claim more than 230,000 lives and destroy about 2 million buildings.

NHK has learned that Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has canceled a visit to three Central Asian countries to deal with the magnitude 7.1 quake that struck off Miyazaki Prefecture on Thursday. He also wants to take all possible measures against a potential megaquake.
Kishida had been scheduled to visit Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia from Friday for a summit meeting with the leaders of five countries in Central Asia. He is expected to attend the meeting online if the situation permits.
Government sources said Kishida wants to assess the damage from Thursday's quake and prioritize recovery and other disaster-response operations.
The Meteorological Agency has issued a special advisory urging people to take precautions against a possible megaquake. The agency says there is a relatively high possibility that a giant earthquake will strike the area where the Nankai Trough is located.
Agency officials note this does not mean that something will definitely occur. But sources say Kishida decided to cancel his trip to ensure that the government is fully prepared.
Kishida is expected to speak about his plans at a news conference in Nagasaki on Friday. He will likely call on people to act calmly and to be prepared in the event of an emergency.

The leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar want Israel and the Islamic group Hamas to resume negotiations on August 15, so a Gaza ceasefire deal can be finalized.
The US White House released a joint statement from the three leaders on Thursday.
The statement said, "The time has come to conclude the ceasefire and hostages and detainees release deal."
The leaders offered to "present a final bridging proposal that resolves the remaining implementation issues in a manner that meets the expectations of all parties."
The statement added that the leaders have asked Israel and Hamas to resume urgent discussions next Thursday in Doha or Cairo.
The Israeli prime minister's office has indicated that it is ready to send a delegation.
It remains unclear whether Hamas will agree to attend the talks. The group appears to have hardened its stance, since its political leader was killed in Iran.
Hamas has chosen Yahya Sinwar as its new political leader. Israel has accused Sinwar of being the mastermind behind the large-scale surprise attack on the country last October.

A US think tank says Ukrainian forces have made confirmed advances of up to 10 kilometers into Russia's western border region of Kursk.
The Institute for the Study of War on Wednesday released its assessment about the cross-border incursion.
The institute made the analysis based on locally-taken footage and other information. It also quotes Russian sources as reporting that Ukrainian forces have captured 11 settlements.
Russia revealed on Tuesday that the Ukrainian military had begun the cross-border foray. Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov told President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that about 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers had launched the assault aiming to seize part of Kursk.
Fierce fighting is believed to be raging in the region, where an "emergency situation regime" is in place. Russian media cited the country's authorities on Wednesday as saying five civilians had been killed.
The Russian defense ministry said on Thursday that Ukrainian armored vehicles were destroyed in a border area of Kursk.
The Ukrainian military has yet to make any official announcements on the attack. But a Ukrainian lawmaker disclosed in a social media post on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military had captured the town of Sudzha, site of a major gas distribution station for Europe.
Analysts regard the incursion believed to have been conducted by the Ukrainian military as rare. The maneuver follows similar cross-border raids into western Russia by members of Russian volunteer soldier groups that side with Ukraine.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are set to hold their first televised debate on September 10 for the US presidential election.
Democratic and Republican presidential nominees usually hold televised debates in the US presidential campaign.
Trump said on Thursday that he had agreed with TV networks to hold debates with Harris on September 4, 10 and 25. Trump asked Harris to comply with the schedule.
The September 10 debate was originally agreed by Trump and US President Joe Biden in May.
Harris told reporters she is happy that Trump finally committed to a debate on September 10, indicating that she will participate.
Referring to the other two debates that Trump proposed, she said, "I am happy to have that conversation about an additional debate for after September 10."
In June, Biden performed poorly in a TV debate with Trump, raising calls within the Democratic Party for Biden to end his reelection campaign.

A United Nations committee has approved a draft of an international treaty to counter cybercrime.
The UN General Assembly aims to crackdown on online crimes including fraud, money laundering and child pornography.
The draft treaty approved on Thursday says it will eliminate safe havens for people involved in cybercrime, and oblige signatory nations to strengthen measures against online criminality. It will also promote international cooperation including technological assistance for developing countries where cybercrime is on the rise.
The UN General Assembly is expected to adopt the draft treaty next month.
Russia and developing countries were supporters of the draft, while Western nations voiced concern over the possible impact on human rights. They say the treaty could lead to restrictions on freedom of expression and stronger monitoring by states.
The director of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's International Safety and Security Cooperation Division, Warisawa Koichi, who served as the committee's vice chairperson, says Japan took part in the negotiations to protect human rights and deal with cybercrime.
Warisawa says the draft represents a major step forward for the international community to counter cross-border cybercrime.
