Japan preparing for two-plus-two talks with India, Australia

Japan is preparing for a series of so-called two-plus-two meetings with India and Australia. The talks feature foreign ministers and defense chiefs.

Leaders in Tokyo aim to boost ties with both nations in light of China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific.

They want to send Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko and Defense Minister Kihara Minoru to India sometime around August 20.

The discussions will likely focus on ways to achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law.

They are also expected to discuss joint exercises between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and Indian military, and Tokyo's provision of defense equipment to India.

The talks with Australia will likely take place early next month.

An agreement aimed at facilitating joint drills between the JSDF and Australian military came into force last year.

The planned meeting will likely see the two sides agree to deepen cooperation under the pact.

Japan, the United States, Australia and India are known as the Quad nations. Kamikawa met her counterparts late last month. Tokyo and Washington also held two-plus-two talks around the same time.

US to adjust military posture to bolster support for Israel

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered more military assets to be deployed to the Middle East and elsewhere, a bid to increase support for Israel.

The Defense Department said on Friday that Austin had ordered adjustments to the US military posture to increase support for the defense of Israel and "to ensure the United States is prepared to respond to various contingencies."

The move comes two days after the assassination of top Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has blamed the killing on Israel and suggested his country will retaliate.

The changes include deployment of additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers to the US European Command and US Central Command regions.

An additional fighter squadron will be sent to the Middle East to reinforce the US military's defense air support capability.

The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group will replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.

The Pentagon also said Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant by phone on Friday. He reiterated ironclad US support for Israel's security and informed Gallant of the additional measures.

Austin was also quoted as saying that further escalation is not inevitable and that all countries in the region would benefit from a de-escalation in tensions.

US government sues TikTok for alleged privacy violations of children

The US Justice Department has sued TikTok for allegedly obtaining personal information from children without parental consent.

The department announced on Friday that it has filed a lawsuit against the operator of the video-sharing app and its Chinese parent company ByteDance in a federal court in California.

The complaint says a federal law prohibits website operators from collecting and using personal information from children under the age of 13 without obtaining consent from their parents. It says TikTok collected and retained email addresses and other types of personal information from accounts made by children, including those created in its "Kids Mode" version.

The department also says that when parents asked TikTok to delete the accounts and the information in them, the operator frequently failed to meet their requests. It adds that TikTok had deficient and ineffectual internal policies to handle the issue.

TikTok issued a statement in response to the lawsuit. It says many of the allegations "relate to past events and practices that are factually inaccurate or have been addressed."

The statement also says TikTok will continue its efforts to improve its protection of children.

There are deep concerns in the United States that the app could pose a threat to national security as data could be leaked to China.

In April, the US president signed into law a package of measures that include banning TikTok in the country unless it is sold by its parent company. TikTok sued the US government, saying the legislation violates the US constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression.

DNC: Harris secures votes for presidential nomination

US Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from delegates to the Democratic National Convention to secure the party's nomination for president. The chairman of the Democratic National Committee made the announcement on Friday.

The committee has been conducting an online roll call, which continues until Monday.

Harris joined a campaign livestream and said she is "honored" by the result. She noted that she will officially accept the nomination next week.

Harris said, "As your future president, I know we are up to this fight. And when we fight, everyone will say in unison, we win."

Harris will be facing the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump. If she wins, she will become the first woman to serve in the Oval Office.

Party leaders expect the pick for vice president to be finalized by August 7, prior to the start of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Tensions remain high in Bangladesh as students call for protests

The situation in Bangladesh remains tense as student groups call for nationwide protests, following deadly clashes last month.

Students led large-scale demonstrations in July over quotas for government jobs. Local media say at least 150 people died as demonstrators and police clashed.

The protests subsided, but student groups are again urging for demonstrations to be held across the country. Sporadic protests have taken place in various areas, with some demonstrators turning violent.

Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas, and some people were injured. Footage shows students detained by police shouting that police cannot stop them with bullets.

Students and others are criticizing the administration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying police have used excessive force to quell the protests. But the administration is accusing opposition parties of being behind the demonstrations.

Italian PM Meloni weighs in on Olympic boxing gender storm

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is questioning the fairness of the Paris Olympics amid a gender storm in women's boxing.

Two fighters at the Games reportedly failed eligibility tests to compete as females at last year's World Championships.

They include Algeria's Imane Khelif, who sources say had high levels of the male hormone, testosterone.

The other boxer comes from Taiwan.

Khelif advanced to the quarterfinals of the 66-kilogram category in Paris on Thursday after an Italian boxer pulled out of their bout mid-fight.

Meloni later said athletes with "male genetic characteristics" should not be allowed to compete as women.

She added that her view is not discriminatory, but is aimed at ensuring females can compete on equal terms.

The Italian government says Meloni raised the issue on Friday with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

The IOC says athletes' genders are based on their passports.

Algeria's Olympic committee issued a statement on Thursday, saying Khelif has been harassed over the controversy and pinning the blame on certain foreign media.

The Taiwanese boxer competed on Friday, winning a bout in the Women's 57-kilogram category.
