Russian defense ministry: Military destroys 11 Ukrainian drones near Moscow
Russia's defense ministry announced on Wednesday that the country's military destroyed 11 Ukrainian drones on the outskirts of the capital Moscow.
The ministry said Ukraine launched attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles on targets inside Russian territory.
In addition, it said Russian air defense systems destroyed another 34 drones in four other regions, including Bryansk in the west bordering Ukraine, and Kaluga, which neighbors Moscow.
There are no reports of damage. But Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said it was one of the largest ever attempts to attack the capital using drones.
Russia has repeatedly been targeted in drone attacks since it launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The defense ministry announced on August 14 that the country had intercepted 117 drones overnight.
Attacks on Moscow have also been carried out a number of times. Last month, an unmanned vehicle was downed over the Moscow region while drones crashed into a business complex in the capital in July and August last year.
Following a drone attack apparently targeting the Kremlin in May last year, Russia accused Ukraine of taking aim at the Russian president. But Ukraine denied any involvement.

Democratic convention delegates confirm Harris's nomination
It is the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The event opened with a ceremonial roll call vote for their presidential nominee, Kamala Harris.
Delegates were gathered to confirm the nominations of Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Harris and Walz did not attend because they were in Milwaukee for a campaign rally but Harris appeared on a screen at the convention to say they are honored to be nominees. She said, "Together we will chart a new way forward and future for freedom, opportunity of optimism and faith."
The Democratic National Committee already conducted an online roll call earlier this month that confirmed Harris as the nominee.
Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle took to the stage. The former president said "we have a chance to elect someone who has spent her entire life trying to give people the same chances America gave her." Adding, "the next president of the United States of America, Kamala Harris."
The Obamas are still popular with Democratic Party supporters. They are particularly popular among young voters.

Trump hints at appointing independent candidate Kennedy to his administration
Republican US presidential nominee Donald Trump has indicated that he may appoint independent presidential election candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to a key position in his administration if Kennedy drops out of the race and Trump wins the election.
The former US president revealed the idea in an interview with CNN on Tuesday. Kennedy is one of the nephews of former US President John F. Kennedy.
When asked if he would consider appointing Kennedy to a role in his administration if he is reelected as president, Trump said he "probably would."
Trump said: "I like him a lot. I respect him a lot." He added, "I would be honored by that endorsement, certainly."
Kennedy's running mate Nicole Shanahan said in a podcast posted earlier in the day that Kennedy is considering dropping out of the race and endorsing Trump.
Kennedy was earlier seen as a candidate who could attract voters disillusioned with both Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden, who was seeking his second term.
After Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee, there has been speculation that she is drawing more votes away from Trump.
Trump's suggestion is apparently aimed at winning over voters supporting Kennedy.

Edano to run in presidential race of Japan's largest opposition party
The former head of Japan's largest opposition Constitutional Democratic Party, Edano Yukio, says he will run in next month's party presidential election.
Edano made the announcement on Wednesday. He is the first CDP member to have expressed his intention to run in the race.
Edano told reporters that it is time to put an end to old politics, which led to the country's 30-year economic slump, and move forward to a new era.
Edano said Japan's historically weak currency and high consumer prices are dealing a serious blow to people's lives. He said amid the economic confusion, the country has been unable to respond to historical changes due to growing distrust in politics.
He said at a time of population decline, Japan is facing the task of putting the economy back on its feet following "Abenomics," -- the economic policy pursued by the late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. He also said that the task should be tackled beyond the framework of the ruling or opposition camps.

Blinken urges Hamas to immediately accept ceasefire proposal
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on the Islamic group Hamas to immediately accept the latest proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Blinken visited Egypt and Qatar on Tuesday. Those countries and the United States are mediating talks aimed at securing an agreement for a ceasefire and the release of the hostages.
Blinken addressed reporters after the talks. He said, "Time is of the essence, because with every passing day, there's the danger of escalation in the region."
The secretary spoke about the proposal and efforts to narrow the gaps between Israel and Hamas. He said, "Israel has now accepted that proposal." He added that the mediators "hope and expect that Hamas will do the same."
Blinken also said that the United States, Egypt and Qatar are going to do everything possible over the coming days to "get Hamas on board with the bridging proposal."
The next round of talks will reportedly take place in Egypt on Thursday and Friday.

EU reveals final plan on countervailing duties for electric vehicles from China
The European Union has disclosed its finalized plan to impose an additional tariff of up to 36.3 percent on electric vehicles imported from China.
The European Commission, the EU's executive body, made the announcement on Tuesday. The maximum rate is slightly lower than the previously proposed planned rate of up to 37.6 percent. This is in addition to the EU's standard 10 percent duty on EV imports.
The commission adopted the provisional rate in July in response to concerns that the vehicles benefit from unfair subsidies from the Chinese government and could harm European firms.
The plan imposes a lower additional tariff of 9 percent on Tesla's Chinese-made EV imports, due to the smaller subsidies the US company receives from the Chinese government.
The commission says the final determination will be put to a vote by member states and will be officially introduced by October 30.
China's commerce ministry said the decision is based on facts unilaterally determined by the EU side, rather than on mutually agreed-upon facts. It said China is firmly opposed to and highly concerned about the plan and vowed to take all necessary measures to protect Chinese firms' legitimate rights and interests.
China has announced that it filed an appeal with the World Trade Organization against the EU's provisional tariffs on EVs on August 9.

Japan, India agree to review 2008 joint declaration on security cooperation
The foreign and defense ministers of Japan and India have agreed to review the two countries' joint declaration on security cooperation in a bid to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The two countries held a "two-plus-two" meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday. From Japan, Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko and Defense Minister Kihara Minoru attended. India was represented by External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
A joint statement noted that the four ministers shared the intention to revise and update the joint declaration the two countries signed in 2008.
The ministers stressed their opposition to any unilateral attempt to change the status quo, apparently with China's growing maritime assertiveness in mind.
The two sides discussed the transfer to India of the latest radar equipment used for Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers.
They agreed to advance joint drills between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Indian military.
The ministers also agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in the space and cyber fields.
They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation among member nations of the Quad framework -- Japan, India, the United States and Australia.
At a joint news conference, Kamikawa noted the international security environment is becoming increasingly severe.
She said Japan and India renewed their strong determination to work together as partners to come up with new solutions in pursuit of regional peace and stability.
Kihara said the two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in defense equipment and technology through the transfer of Japan's latest radio antennas to India. He added that he was able to underscore the importance of strengthening coordination with like-minded nations.
