Israeli airstrike on school in northern Gaza kills more than 100

Officials in the Gaza Strip say more than 100 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people.

They say the air raid took place early Saturday morning while people were performing prayers at the school in northern Gaza.

The Israeli military claims that its forces targeted a base of the Islamic group Hamas within the school.

The military also says that before carrying out the strike, the forces took steps to mitigate the risk of harming civilians.

Iran prepares to retaliate, Israel and US ramp up security cooperation

Iran is gearing up to retaliate against Israel over the killing of the Hamas political leader in the country, while Israel and the United States are stepping up security cooperation to counter Iranian threats.

Ismail Haniyeh was killed during a visit to Iran last month. Iran blames Israel and has vowed to take revenge.

Iran's state-run television reported on Friday that the commander of the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, Ismail Qaani, sent a letter to new Hamas political leader Yahya Sinwar. The Quds Force is an elite unit supporting Hamas and other anti-Israel forces.

In the letter, Qaani reportedly said Iran will undoubtedly inflict harsh punishment on Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke by phone with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to discuss defense assistance.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, revealed that he conducted a situational assessment with the visiting commander of the US Central Command.

Ukrainian, Russian attacks inflict civilian casualties

Russia and Ukraine have both suffered large civilian casualties, as Ukrainian troops advanced into Russian territory and Russian forces attacked a shopping mall.

The Russian defense ministry said on Friday that its forces continued repelling cross-border attacks by the Ukrainian military in the western border region of Kursk.

Russia's health authorities said that 55 people, including eight children, were injured in the attacks and taken to hospitals for treatment. The country's ministry of emergency situations reportedly evacuated residents and began delivering food and medical supplies.

Ukraine's interior ministry said on the same day that a shopping mall in Kostyantynivka in the eastern region of Donetsk came under attack by Russian forces. Police said at least 14 people died and 43 others were injured.

Ukrainian military expert Oleg Zhdanov told NHK that Ukraine's incursion is aimed at strengthening the country's position with an eye on future ceasefire negotiations.

He said controlling part of Russian territory could be used as a bargaining chip.

A passenger plane has crashed in Brazil. Authorities say there were more than 60 people on board, and all have died.

The plane came down at 1:20 p.m. on Friday in a residential area 80 kilometers from Sao Paulo.

Officials with the airliner VoePass say the craft was an ATR-72 twin propeller plane carrying 57 passengers and four crewmembers.

Footage taken right after the incident shows debris scattered around people's homes.

The officials say the aircraft was heading from Parana state to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva extended his condolences to the victims. He said, "I have to be the bearer of very bad news, and I would like everyone to stand up so that we can have a minute of silence because a plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo, Sao Paulo."

Local media say there are no reports of injuries among people living near the crash site.

The US Space Command says it has confirmed that the break-up of a Chinese rocket launched earlier this week resulted in hundreds of pieces of space debris.

The command said on Thursday that the rocket launched on Tuesday broke up and generated "over 300 pieces of trackable debris in low-Earth orbit."

China used the rocket to ferry 18 satellites into orbit as a part of a project to build its own satellite communications network. The rocket is believed to have broken apart for some reason after deploying the satellites.

The command said that it "has observed no immediate threats and continues to conduct routine conjunction assessments to support the safety and sustainability of the space domain."

US firm SpaceX said the debris does not pose a significant immediate risk to its Starlink satellite internet services. But the firm said it is closely monitoring the debris, as most of it is likely to remain in space for decades.

The expansion of the satellite business has led to increasing amounts of space debris in recent years.

US space agency NASA says more than 25,000 such objects larger than 10 centimeters are known to exist. They pose a risk of damage to satellite communications systems.

China has filed an appeal with the World Trade Organization against provisional European Union tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry made the announcement on Friday.

The EU introduced provisional duties of up to 37.6 percent on Chinese EVs last month. That is in addition to a 10-percent levy.

Officials in the bloc said the vehicles benefit from unfair government subsidies and could harm European makers.

The Chinese ministry says the decision "lacks factual and legal basis, seriously violates WTO rules, and undermines" international cooperation on climate change.

The ministry also urges the bloc to "rectify its erroneous actions promptly, in order to jointly uphold the stability of China-EU economic and trade cooperation" and the EV industry supply chain.

The provisional tariffs are effective for up to four months, but could continue for extra five years if approved in a vote by EU member states.

Beijing tries to gain support from leaders of EU countries when it hosts them, by stressing the importance of the supply chain's stability, and by touting the strengthened economic cooperation.

Ami successfully executed a freeze, or a total stop, in round one, and showed great footwork in round two. In round three, the final, she received a high score in musicality to clinch the gold 3-0.

Nicka won silver and 18-year-old Liu Qingyi, known as 671, from China, took bronze.

At the Paris Olympics, Japan's Higuchi Rei has won the men's 57-kilogram freestyle wrestling final, while Sakurai Tsugumi has earned a gold medal at the same weight in the women's event.

Higuchi, silver medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, faced Spencer Richard Lee of the United States in the final on Friday.

He allowed a two-point lead in the first half, before scoring two points in the latter half to catch up. He added two more points just before the end of the match to clinch the come-from-behind 4-2 victory.

It is the first time for a Japanese man to win the Olympic gold in the lightest weight category in the sport since the 1988 Seoul Games.

In the women's section, Sakurai defeated Anastasia Nichita of Moldova by a 6-0 points victory in Friday's final to secure the podium's top spot.

First-time Olympian Sakurai has won three consecutive world championships. She beat the same opponent in the final of last year's world championships.
