Hezbollah leader: Battle against Israel enters new phase

The leader of the Iran-backed Shia Muslim group Hezbollah in Lebanon has suggested its readiness to strike against Israel following the killing of its senior commander and the top political leader of Hamas.

Hassan Nasrallah said on Thursday that the battle has entered a new phase and the enemy should expect retaliation.

The Israeli military said on Tuesday that it "eliminated" the Hezbollah commander in a targeted airstrike on Lebanon's capital, Beirut.

Hamas, which is fighting Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, said on Wednesday that political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by Israel during his visit to Tehran.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack in the Iranian capital, but Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said his people consider it their duty to avenge Haniyeh's death.

Reuters news agency reported on Thursday that top Iranian officials will meet the representatives of Tehran's regional allies, including Hezbollah, to discuss potential retaliation against Israel.

The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said the response of his country and the resistance front is being reviewed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country "is in a state of very high readiness for any scenario," and that it "will exact a very high price for any act of aggression."

Biden reaffirms commitment to Israel's security in talks with Netanyahu

US President Joe Biden has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US remains committed to Israel's security against Iran and its proxy groups.

The White House said on Thursday that Biden spoke with Netanyahu by phone earlier in the day. The talks came after the killings of a senior commander of the Iran-backed Shia Muslim group Hezbollah and the top political leader of the Islamic group Hamas.

The White House said Biden "reaffirmed his commitment to Israel's security against all threats from Iran, including its proxy terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis."

The two leaders reportedly discussed efforts to support Israel's defense against ballistic missiles and drones, as well as new defensive US military deployments.

The White House said Biden also stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to de-escalate broader tensions in the region.

Hamas said on Wednesday that its political leader Ismail Haniyeh had been killed by an Israeli attack while he was visiting Iran. Hamas is fighting Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has not confirmed the killing, but Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has suggested possible retaliation for Haniyeh's death.

The Israeli military said earlier that it had "eliminated" the senior commander of Hezbollah in an airstrike on Lebanon's capital, Beirut. In a comment on Thursday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah also hinted at its readiness to strike against Israel.

The US military helped Israel to counter a massive missile and drone attack by Iran in April. Iran said the attack was in retaliation for a strike it blamed on Israel that killed a commander of its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Dozens freed in historic prisoner swap

White House officials say they and their counterparts in six countries freed 26 people on Thursday as part of the most complex prisoner exchange since the Cold War. They say they have had "tough conversations" over the return of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and others detained in Russia.

Russian authorities arrested Gershkovich in March 2023 on charges of spying. They found him guilty and, two weeks ago, sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

On Thursday, they released him and 15 others, including former Marine Paul Whelan, who was held for more than five years for espionage. The Russians also freed human rights activist Oleg Orlov of the group Memorial, which was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

The detainees were handed over in Ankara, Turkey, for 10 people who had been held in the West. White House officials say there was no money exchanged.

US President Joe Biden says the "brutal ordeal" is over for those who have been released. He added that he and the families were able to speak to them by phone from the Oval Office.

Biden called the release a "feat of diplomacy and friendship." He added it would not have been possible without allies from Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway and Turkey.

Russian President Vladimir Putin directed his gratitude to detainees who had served in the military. He thanked them for their "loyalty to the oath, duty and homeland." He promised they would be nominated for state awards, and he reminded them that they have now returned home.

Rift over election results deepens between Venezuela and neighboring countries

A diplomatic rift between President Nicolas Maduro's administration in Venezuela and neighboring countries is deepening over the disputed results of the presidential election in the South American nation.

Venezuela's electoral officials announced that Maduro had won Sunday's election. However, the opposition camp claims that its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, won by a wide margin. This has raised international doubts about the election results.

The Maduro administration has been ramping up pressure on the opposition members who reject the results. A local nongovernmental organization says clashes between protesters and security forces resulted in 11 deaths and the detention of over 670 people as of Thursday.

The administration has also ordered diplomats from seven Latin American countries that question the election results to leave Venezuela. In response, Argentina announced it would withdraw its diplomatic mission by the end of Thursday. Chile also pulled out some of its diplomats on the same day.

Meanwhile, Peru on Monday instructed Venezuelan diplomats stationed in the country to leave within 72 hours.

US recognizes opposition candidate as Venezuelan presidential election winner

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says "it is clear" that the candidate fielded by the main opposition parties won the Venezuelan presidential election on Sunday.

Blinken released a statement on Thursday assessing the results of the election, which effectively came down to a contest between incumbent President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition camp's unified candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.

The election commission of Venezuela said on Monday that Maduro won a third term. The announcement raised doubts among the international community.

Blinken's statement referred to surveys conducted by the democratic opposition camp and independent observers.

It said, "Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that" Gonzalez "won the most votes" in the election. The statement added that the US congratulates Gonzalez on his successful campaign.

The statement criticized the Maduro administration for its increased repression of opposition members. It said: "Now is the time for the Venezuelan parties to begin discussions on a respectful, peaceful transition in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people. We fully support the process of re-establishing democratic norms in Venezuela."

US military blames gearbox failure for deadly Osprey crash off southwest Japan

The US military has blamed the deadly crash of an Osprey transport aircraft in waters off southwestern Japan on the "catastrophic failure" of a gearbox.

The US Air Force published a report on Thursday of its investigation into the crash of the CV-22 Osprey off Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture last November. All eight crewmembers onboard died.

The report says the failure of the aircraft's left-hand gearbox was most likely due to a crack in one of the gears and fatigue cracking of the bearing cage.

The gearbox transmits power to the proprotor, a type of aircraft rotor.

The report says the loss of drive to the left-hand proprotor occurred when at least one piece of the failed gear became wedged in the assembly, grinding against the teeth of another gear until they were all removed.

The report also points out that according to Air Force guidance, the crew are supposed to land as soon as possible when there is a warning of a problem with a proprotor gearbox.

But it says that after the warning was displayed, the Osprey headed to Yakushima Island, not to Iojima or other islands that were closer to the aircraft at the time.

The document adds that the crew had "no further discussion or collaboration" on other landing options or actions to set conditions for an immediate landing or ditching.

Describing the crash as a "mishap," the report concludes that it resulted from the catastrophic failure of the gearbox and the pilot's decisions that "unnecessarily extended the flight" after multiple advisories and warnings about the glitch.

Denmark to decide on extradition of Sea Shepherd ex-leader to Japan

Danish authorities have indicated they will carefully consider whether to extradite a former leader of the anti-whaling Sea Shepherd group following a request by the Japanese government.

In 2010, Japan's Coast Guard obtained an arrest warrant for Paul Watson on suspicion of organizing forcible obstructions of Japan's research whaling and put him on a global wanted list via the International Criminal Police Organization, or ICPO.

Police in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, detained Watson on July 21. He had been on his way by sea to the North Pacific on a mission to obstruct the operation of a Japanese whaling mother ship.

Denmark's Ministry of Justice told NHK on Thursday that it had received a formal extradition request from the Japanese government on the previous day. The ministry indicated it would carefully consider the request in coordination with local police.

There are growing calls against Watson's extradition, particularly from anti-whaling countries. French President Emmanuel Macron has requested the Danish government not to extradite Watson. French media reported that an online petition calling for his release has collected nearly 700,000 signatures.

A court in Greenland says his detention period will expire on August 15. A decision on whether to hand him over to Japan is expected to be made by that date.

China slams Canada for sailing navy ship through Taiwan Strait

A Canadian navy ship has passed through the Taiwan Strait in what Canada called a routine transit. China has reacted sharply, saying the passage undermined peace across the strait.

Canada's Joint Operations Command said on social media Wednesday the HMCS Montreal frigate had sailed through the strait. The post, with photos of the frigate and its crew, said Canada operated in accordance with international law in support of the rules-based international order.

Canada's Defense Minister Bill Blair said the same day his country is increasing the presence of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Indo-Pacific region.

A spokesperson for China's People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command said Thursday the Canadian navy ship passed through the strait the previous day, and the Canadian government had "hyped up" the transit.

The spokesperson said the transit had disrupted and "undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

The US Indo-Pacific Command on Wednesday posted a photo of its guided missile destroyer the USS Ralph Johnson sailing alongside the Canadian ship. It did not say if either ship had sailed through the strait.

The Chinese military spokesperson did not mention involvement of the US forces in the Canadian transit.

US and Canadian Navy ships have passed through the Taiwan Strait before, aiming to curb China's growing military pressure on Taiwan.

Misinformation about murder suspect triggers violent protests in UK

Large-scale riots have broken out in Britain in response to false information about a suspect in a recent fatal knife attack. The suspect was erroneously described as "a Muslim immigrant."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Thursday that "inciting violence online is a criminal offence." He said he will take all the steps that are necessary to protect the Muslim community.

On Monday a 17-year-old boy killed three children and injured 10 other people in a knife attack at a dance workshop in Southport, England.

Local media outlets report that misinformation about the suspect spread quickly on social media sites. On one social media account it was reportedly stated that the suspect "had arrived in the UK illegally on a boat last year." That information was incorrect.

Protests against the government's immigration policies erupted across the country the day after the attack, and some turned violent. Police officers were assaulted in some instances, and items were thrown at a mosque.

The police say over 100 people have been arrested in London and other parts of the country.

They say people who may be supporters of far-right groups were among the protesters. They report that the attacker "was born in the UK."

Democratic delegates voting to nominate Harris in "virtual roll call"

Delegates to the US Democratic National Convention are voting online to select Vice President Kamala Harris as their nominee for president.

President Joe Biden threw his support behind Harris after dropping out of the race in late July. Nearly 4,700 delegates are taking part in what they call a "virtual roll call." They started casting their ballots on Thursday and will wrap up Monday evening.

No other candidates qualified to challenge Harris, who already has enough support from pledged delegates. That means she will see her name atop the Democratic ticket by next week before announcing her pick for vice president.

Harris will formally accept the nomination two weeks later when delegates convene in Chicago for the convention. She will have a little over two months until the November election to convince voters to choose her over the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump. If she wins, she will become the first woman to serve in the Oval Office.
