Israel continues offensive in Gaza, UN concerned about humanitarian situation

The Israeli military continues its offensive in the Gaza Strip while issuing evacuation orders to residents there. The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in the enclave.

The military pressed forward with operations in Gaza on Saturday. Local media say 15 people died in central Gaza.

Israeli forces have repeatedly notified Gaza residents in advance of military operations and ordered them to evacuate to places they designate as humanitarian areas.

But the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Friday that the size of the so-called humanitarian area has been reduced to 11 percent of the total area of the Gaza Strip.

The UN office also pointed to a shortage of tents, hygiene and other supplies.

Negotiators wrapped up two-day talks on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages in Doha, Qatar, on Friday.

A senior official of US President Joe Biden's administration said a new proposal designed to bridge gaps between Israel and Hamas was presented. The official said negotiators will meet again by the end of next week in Cairo.

Iran had earlier vowed to take revenge on Israel over the killing of the Hamas political leader in July in Tehran.

Reuters news agency on Friday quoted a response by Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations when asked if the country would continue to hold off on retaliating against Israel now that the ceasefire talks had been extended. The mission reportedly said, "We hope so."

Blinken to visit Israel to push ceasefire talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Israel as early as Sunday to work on promoting talks on a ceasefire and hostage release in the Gaza Strip during his visit.

Reuters news agency reported Blinken is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

Israel's prime minister's office posted on social media on Saturday that Netanyahu received a report from the negotiating team. And it says, "The team expressed to the Prime Minister cautious optimism regarding the possibility of progress on the deal, in accordance with the updated American proposal."

US President Joe Biden told US reporters, "We are closer than we've ever been."

But Hamas has expressed distrust of Israel and the United States, saying that Israel is adding new conditions.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued bombing on Saturday in Gaza.

Reuters news agency reported that at least 17 people were killed and dozens others were injured in the central Gaza air raids on Saturday.

Ukraine says it destroyed key Russian bridge, stresses achievement

Ukrainian forces claim to have destroyed a strategically important bridge in Russia as they continue their cross-border operation into Russia's western region of Kursk.

On Friday, Ukrainian forces released video footage showing what they claim to be a bridge over the Seym River being destroyed by their attack.

Reports from the Associated Press and other media said Russia used the bridge to supply its troops, and that its destruction could hamper their efforts.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, said in a social media post, "For the first time, the Kursk region was hit by Western-made rocket launchers, probably American HIMARS."

She also said the bridge was completely destroyed and that volunteers who were providing assistance to evacuating citizens were killed in the attack.

A video taken on Friday in Sudzha, a town Ukrainian forces claim to have captured, showed a signboard at the entrance of an underground shelter that read in Russian, "Peaceful people in the basement. There are no soldiers."

Ukraine's military commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday that the fighting is "ongoing along the whole frontline" in the Kursk region.

He reported that Ukrainian forces had advanced one to three kilometers in some directions. He also said their forces continued capturing Russian prisoners of war.

Zelenskyy said on Friday, "We see that the occupier is suffering losses, and this is helpful, very helpful for our defense." He added, "It is about destroying the logistics of the Russian army and draining their reserves."

NATO commander: Russian internal confusion leads to slow response

The NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe has indicated that internal confusion in Russia has been partly responsible for a slow reaction to Ukraine's cross-border attack.

General Christopher Cavoli praised the Ukrainian operation in his speech at a US think tank on Thursday that he was "astounded by some of the innovation that has come out of Ukraine under pressure, militarily, technically, tactically."

He described the Russian reaction as "fairly slow and scattered."

He then said that "it wouldn't exactly be clear who is in charge," be it the interior ministry, Federal Security Service or other domestic entities.

Cavoli added that some Russian units have come from Eastern Ukraine to fight in western part of Russia. He pointed out that Moscow is likely to bring units from elsewhere to shore up their forces there.

Clinical trials start on gut bacteria that may make cancer drugs work better

A team of Japanese researchers has started clinical trials to see if healthy intestinal bacteria improves the outcome of immunotherapy in certain cancer patients.

Immunotherapy, which boosts immunity in patients, is widely used for the treatment of stomach or esophageal cancer, but some patients do not respond well to it.

Researchers from the National Cancer Center Japan and Juntendo University are involved in the clinical trial.

Research overseas had shown that patients unresponsive to immunotherapy drugs have unbalanced intestinal bacteria.

Based on those overseas studies, the researchers will transplant bacteria from healthy people in patients before immunotherapy drugs are administered.

The researchers say that they intend to verify the safety and efficacy of the treatment method in clinical trials that involve up to 45 patients over the next three years.

They say that this is the first clinical trial in the country in which intestinal bacteria will be used to treat cancer in the digestive organs.

Shoji Hirokazu, chief physician at the National Cancer Center Hospital, is leading the initiative.

He said he hopes clinical trials will prove the method is safe and help the team better understand its mechanism.

He said he hopes the method will provide a new option in strategies to treat cancer.

Heat wave continues to grip Japan, posing health risk

Weather officials in Japan are warning of heatstroke risk as they forecast extremely hot weather on Sunday.

Elderly people and infants need to be given special attention as they are at higher risk.

Goldfish scoopers compete in western Japan

People in Japan are demonstrating their skills at a competition to see who can catch the most goldfish using a fragile paper scoop.

Yamatokoriyama City in Nara Prefecture has been hosting the event since 1995 to boost its profile as a major goldfish farming town.

The 29th annual competition was held on Sunday in the city, with over 1,700 contestants participating from across the country.

Armed with fragile paper scoops, the competitors try to capture as many goldfish as possible in three minutes from tubs containing about 1,000 fish each.

A total of 181 groups took part in the team scooping competition in the morning.

A member of a local team of women in their 50s said their hard practice paid off.

A first-time entrant said her team scooped only one and she felt that the event is not for amateur scoopers.

Twenty-five teams competed in the finals after getting through an elimination round. The winner scooped a total of 79 goldfish.
