Senior members of Japan's LDP deny involvement in fundraising scandal

Senior members of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party have given their explanations about a fundraising scandal that has rocked Japanese politics.

Former economy and industry minister Nishimura Yasutoshi and former Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu spoke at the Lower House Deliberative Council on Political Ethics on Friday.

Nishimura and Matsuno are former secretaries general of the Liberal Democratic Party's largest Abe faction. They apologized for causing distrust in politics over the fundraising scandal involving the faction, but denied they were involved in any accounting procedures.

Nishimura said the head of the secretariat was in charge of accounting, and other senior officials, especially the secretary general, were not involved. He said he presumes ticket sales for fundraisers and sales quotas for faction members were decided by the chairperson of the faction and the head of the secretariat. He said he does not know any details about the accounting.

Nishimura was asked about the so-called kickbacks in which faction members allegedly received money from ticket sales that exceeded their quotas. He said he believes the practice began as a measure to support the political activities of young lawmakers, but he does not know when it started.

Nishimura said it was a customary practice that continued for a long time by chairpersons and heads of the secretariat, but other senior officials were not involved.

A former head of the Constitutional Democratic Party, Edano Yukio, asked about a meeting of senior officials of the faction in 2022, after the death of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. Abe had expressed his intention to end the practice of kickbacks.

Edano said there is a testimony that the meeting proposed ways to legally report kickbacks in political funds reports. He asked if Nishimura made this proposal. Edano said Nishimura must have known that it was illegal not to report kickbacks.

Nishimura responded that the meeting did not discuss if the refunds were legal or illegal, and there were no discussions about political fund reports. He said that a proposal was made for the faction to buy tickets for fundraisers hosted by lawmakers as one of the options for faction members who asked for refunds.

Matsuno also said he was not involved in accounting related to the faction's party ticket sales.

Matsuno said that during his term as the faction's secretary general, he was not aware of any ticket sales quotas for lawmakers and did not know about kickbacks. He said he did not know how revenues from party ticket sales were processed, including whether they were listed in political funds reports.

Ceremony marks 70 years since hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll

A ceremony in the Marshall Islands has marked 70 years since a US hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

Many islanders and crewmembers of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru from the central Japanese city of Yaizu and fishing boats from Kochi Prefecture, southwestern Japan, were exposed to radiation when the test was conducted on March 1, 1954.

A number of Japanese, including a relative of a crewmember from Kochi, attended the event in the capital, Majuro, on Friday. They called for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

A representative of the islanders who were forced to relocate from Bikini Atoll said in a speech that their sacrifice and suffering must never be forgotten. Some people wiped tears from their eyes.

Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine pledged to continue negotiations to seek compensation from the US government. She said moving forward means squarely facing the damage caused to people in the past, present and future, as well as to the environment.

The United States conducted 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands through 1958.

Islanders who were exposed to radiation are suffering from health problems. Residents who had been forced to relocate and have not been able to return to their homeland are calling for compensation and support.

Shimomoto Setsuko traveled from Japan to attend the ceremony for the first time. Her father was on one of the vessels and died of cancer.

Shimomoto said she was glad to take part in the event. She added that she wants to share her anger at nuclear tests with other Japanese people.

More than 100 killed waiting for aid in Gaza

Health authorities in Gaza say Israeli troops killed more than 100 civilians waiting for aid on Thursday. This comes as the number of Palestinian deaths has surpassed 30,000 since October.

United Nations officials said "life is draining out" of Gaza at terrifying speed. They saw another example of that as civilians gathered around aid trucks delivering food and water. Local officials said Israeli troops opened fire, killing 112 and injuring 760. Hamas leaders describe it as a "massacre."

Israeli Government Spokesperson Avi Hyman called what happened a "tragedy" but claimed the truck drivers were responsible.

Hyman said, "The trucks were overwhelmed. And the people driving the trucks, which were Gazan civilian drivers, plowed into the crowds of people."

UN officials said they do not know what happened but that the incident shows the chaos in which they are working. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said, "These people died because humanitarian aid has not been delivered in a safe manner."

Negotiators have been pushing for a ceasefire before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is near the end of next week.

US President Joe Biden had said he hoped for a ceasefire by Monday. However, on Thursday he walked back that statement, admitting the incident will complicate peace talks.

Ohtani discusses marriage, saying his wife is fun to be around

Japanese Major League star Ohtani Shohei's announcement of his marriage has surprised baseball fans and many other people around the world.

Ohtani spoke to reporters at the Los Angeles Dodgers' training camp site on Thursday and said his wife is fun to be around and the type of a person he can imagine being together with for the rest of his life.

He says the woman is just an ordinary Japanese person, and that he met her about three or four years ago. He said her overall personality suits him.

Ohtani says they were engaged last year and he proposed to her "in an ordinary way."

He says his wife arrived in the United States after his team began its training camp.

Ohtani says his marriage did not affect his decision to transfer to the Dodgers. He added that she respects his opinions.

Asked why he made his marriage public at this time, Ohtani jokingly said that reporters would get bothersome otherwise, and the biggest reason is that he wanted to focus on baseball after announcing his marriage.

NASA, US Navy practice astronaut recovery from Artemis mission spacecraft

NASA and the US Navy have practiced how to retrieve astronauts from a spacecraft after it splashes down in the sea on its return from a trip around the Moon.

The US space agency said the training involved the four astronauts who will crew the Orion spacecraft in its test flight next year. The mission will travel around the Moon as part of the US-led Artemis lunar exploration program.

Officials say participants in the training confirmed how personnel on an inflatable boat should approach a spacecraft in the sea and safely recover astronauts. The simulated Orion module used in the test is the same size as the real one, measuring about 3 meters high.

Reporters at a US naval base in San Diego, California, were allowed access to the mockup module and a military vessel also involved in the training.
