China unveils plan to stabilize real estate market

China says it will assist real estate projects with reasonable financing but will not support developers that are facing insolvency.

Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong spoke on Saturday at a news conference on the sidelines of the National People's Congress in Beijing.

He said a total of about 27 billion dollars of financing had been approved by the end of February for developers based on their projects.

But he said in accordance with law, the government will make developers pay the price for hurting the public interest, pointing to those facing insolvency. He added that such firms should be declared bankrupt or undergo restructuring according to market principles.

Major developer Evergrande Group was issued a liquidation order by a court in Hong Kong. Another major developer, Country Garden, faced a liquidation petition filed by its creditors with a Hong Kong court.

The real estate market accounts for about one-fourth of China's GDP. Observers say the government is hoping to stabilize the currently stagnant market through the shakeup policy.

Myanmar youths fleeing to Thailand to avoid military service

A growing number of young people in Myanmar are leaving for neighboring Thailand to flee compulsory military service announced by the junta one month ago.

The announcement on February 10 prompted citizens subject to the call-up to try to escape Myanmar. Many swarmed foreign missions, including the Thai embassy in Yangon, to obtain long-term visas.

Two people died last month when they were caught in a crowd at a passport office in the second largest city of Mandalay.

A university in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai received 2,100 applications to take entrance exams earlier this month for 100 places at its English-language department. Most of the applicants were from Myanmar.

A 32-year-old applicant from Yangon said his twin brother and all of his friends are on the side of pro-democracy forces. He said he has no intention of joining the military to shoot them.

An official of the university said the institution has never received so many applications. The official also said the university will provide as much support as it can to students from Myanmar.

Myanmar's junta said last month that men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27 must serve for the military for up to two years. The duration of service can be extended to five years during a state of emergency.

The junta said it will call up the first batch of 5,000 people in April. But it later announced that it does not plan to include women in the conscript pool. It was an apparent move to quell concern among young people.

Myanmar's military grabbed power in a coup in February 2021. It has since been fighting against pro-democracy forces and ethnic minority militias.

The military has been seeing a growing number of soldiers killed or surrendering after the alliance of ethnic militants launched coordinated offensives in late October in the eastern state of Shan.

The planned conscription is believed to be an effort to make up for the loss of soldiers.

Biden-Trump rematch kicks off in battleground state

US President Joe Biden and the presumptive Republican challenger, former President Donald Trump, have kicked off their rematch in the November presidential election. Biden and Trump both campaigned in Georgia, one of the important battleground states.

Biden hosted a rally in Atlanta, the state capital, on Saturday.

Biden said: "It's not hyperbole to suggest our freedoms are literally on the ballot this November. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans are trying to take our freedoms away."

Biden called out his opponent's stance on reproductive rights and other highly contested issues.

Trump rallied 100 kilometers away from Atlanta.

He called Biden "a threat to democracy" and accused him of "weaponizing" governments and the department of justice. Trump is facing 91 felony charges in four criminal cases.

He said "Together, we will turn the page forever on the miserable nightmare of the Biden presidency."

Residents in northeastern Japan honor 2011 tsunami victims at new monument

Residents of a community in northeastern Japan have gathered at a new monument to remember victims of the tsunami caused by the massive earthquake 13 years ago.

A neighborhood association in Katagishi Town in Iwate Prefecture's Kamaishi City erected the monument in November last year with donations from residents. It is aimed at remembering 33 fellow residents who were killed by tsunami, and passing down the lesson of the disaster to the next generation.

About 40 people attended the memorial service on Sunday, a day before the 13th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

The participants offered prayers and left incense and flowers at the monument. The association's official Asari Kinichi said the monument will serve to pass down the memory of the disaster to the next generation. He also said it will help disaster prevention efforts in the district to create a safe and reliable community.

Ise Keiko lost a relative in the tsunami. She said she feels 13 years are both short and long. She said she is glad that the nice monument has been completed.

Kashiwazaki Masayoshi lost his father and wife. He said that as time goes on, he feels regret more and more about what he should have done at that time. He added that it is important to pass on this experience to the next generation.

The neighborhood association plans to continue to hold a memorial service at the monument in March every year.
