Trump, Biden power ahead in Super Tuesday races, Haley wins Vermont

Results are pouring in from Super Tuesday's election primary races in the United States. Voters in 16 states are choosing their party's candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

Former US President Donald Trump has swept nearly all Republican contests paving the way for a face-off with President Joe Biden in November.

In Palm beach, Florida, Trump said: "This was amazing, amazing. I had an amazing day. It's been an incredible period of time in our country's history."

Referring to Biden, Trump said: "He's the worst president in the history of our country. There's never been anything like what's happening to our country."

According to ABC News, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley clinched a projected win in Vermont, her only win so far besides Washington D.C.

Haley's campaign says it is "honored" to have received the support of millions of Americans across the country, including in Vermont."

Super Tuesday is expected to add pressure on Haley to end her bid to become the Republican nominee for president.

The Democrats are also holding their primaries or caucuses in 15 states and one territory. Biden won in 15 states but lost in American Samoa.

In a statement reacting to the Republican race, Biden said: "Tonight's results leave the American people with a clear choice. Are we going to keep moving forward or will we allow Donald Trump to drag us backwards into the chaos, division and darkness that defined his term in office?"

China to raise defense spending despite economic uncertainty

China is set to increase its defense spending by 7.2 percent this year despite growing economic uncertainty in the country.

The National People's Congress began on Tuesday to decide the country's key policies.

The government's budget plan unveiled at the opening session of the parliament includes defense spending of 1.665 trillion yuan, or about 230 billion dollars.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who made a comprehensive report on government activities, announced that this year's target for economic growth is around 5 percent, about the same as last year.

Li said, "Achieving this year's target will not be easy." Attention is focused on whether the Chinese government will be able to come up with effective measures to achieve the goal.

Concerning China's military buildup, Li said the country's armed forces "will strengthen all-around military training and combat readiness" in order to "firmly safeguard China's national sovereignty, security and development interests."

As for Taiwan, Li said Beijing will "promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations" and will be "firm advancing the cause of the unification of the motherland."

China is stepping up military activities in the Indo-Pacific region. It has also not pledged to renounce the use of force to achieve unification despite its declared intention to pursue a peaceful unification.

US destroyer transits through Taiwan Strait, draws Chinese reaction

The US Navy says one of its destroyers has sailed through the Taiwan Strait, drawing a response from China.

The US 7th Fleet said in a statement on Tuesday that its guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn conducted a routine south-to-north Taiwan strait transit that same day.

The statement said US ships "transit between the South China Sea and the East China Sea via the Taiwan Strait and have done so for many years."

It also said the transit occurred through a corridor in the strait "that is beyond any coastal state's territorial seas."

The statement added, "Within this corridor all nations enjoy high-seas freedoms of navigation."

Responding to the move, a spokesperson for the Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command issued a statement.

The statement said the military deployed its maritime and air forces to track and monitor the US warship's transit in the whole course and handled it according to law and regulations.

It stressed that Chinese troops remain on high alert at all times and address any intimidation and provocation.

China's Premier Li Qiang referred to Taiwan in a report on government activities at the National People's Congress, which started on Tuesday, stressing that China resolutely opposes external interference.

Suspected arson attack nearby causes Tesla plant shutdown in Germany

US electric vehicle maker Tesla has suspended operations at its plant in Germany due to a nearby fire. Local police say they are investigating the case as a suspected arson attack.

The plant in Germany's eastern state of Brandenburg halted work because of a power outage caused by the fire at a nearby electricity transmission tower on Tuesday.

Local media say a far-left environmental activist group has claimed responsibility for starting the fire to disrupt production at the factory.

State authorities say the same group conducted an arson attack on the power supply to the same Tesla site in 2021.

The plant is Tesla's first manufacturing site in Europe. It employs more than 12,000 people to produce electric vehicles.

Plant officials say the power supply will remain interrupted for several days and production is not expected to resume this week.

Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, said on social media that stopping production of electric vehicles rather than fossil fuel ones, is extremely dumb.

Welfare benefit applications in Japan hit 11-year high in 2023

Preliminary Japanese government figures show that the number of welfare benefit applications filed last year surpassed 255,000, the highest in over a decade.

The welfare ministry says this is likely due to the prolonged impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, and the recent increase in consumer prices, cutting down on people's savings.

Figures show that there were 255,079 applications in 2023. That's up by 18,123, or 7.6 percent, from the previous year.

This is the highest number of benefit requests since comparable data became available in 2013.
Since then, the number of applications dropped year on year for six straight years. But since 2020, the number grew for four consecutive years.

The latest high also marks the steepest rate of increase in four years.

As of December, there were more than 1.65 million households on welfare across Japan. That's up by about 7,090, or 0.4 percent, from the same month in 2022.

Households of elderly singles accounted for over 841,000, or about 51 percent, of the total.

Ministry officials have urged people struggling to make ends meet not to hesitate to ask their municipalities for help.
