Japan's Emperor, Empress visit quake-hit peninsula
Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have visited one of the communities hit hardest by the powerful New Year's Day earthquake. Wajima City is on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast.
The couple arrived at Noto Satoyama Airport before 11 a.m. on Friday aboard a flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport. They then flew to Wajima City on a Japan Self-Defense Forces helicopter in the afternoon.
This is the second time since the Emperor assumed the throne in 2019 that the couple has visited areas which were recently hit by a natural disaster.
The city suffered serious damage not only from the quake but also a subsequent massive fire.
The fire gutted an area at the center of the city known as Asaichi Street, which was a major tourist destination. One hundred and two people were killed across the city, including those from causes thought to be related to the disaster.
The Imperial couple passed collapsed buildings as they were driven through the city to the site of the fire. They bowed deeply at the site after receiving a briefing from City Mayor Sakaguchi Shigeru.
The Emperor and Empress then visited a nearby public facility where more than 100 quake survivors are taking shelter. They knelt and talked to the survivors.
The couple also met police officers and community firefighters who have been engaged in disaster response efforts, and thanked them for their hard work.
Local residents lined a street to welcome the Emperor and Empress, and waved to them as they passed by. The couple waved back from their vehicle.
A woman with her baby said she felt greatly encouraged by the visit. She added that she hopes that the area will be rebuilt, even if it takes a long time.

Ohtani's ex-interpreter reportedly faces IRS criminal probe
The Associated Press has reported the recently fired interpreter for Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei is under criminal investigation by US tax authorities.
Mizuhara Ippei was dismissed by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday as US media outlets reported allegations that he gambled illegally.
The reports say Mizuhara had debts from wagering on sports and that about 4.5 million dollars have been transferred from Ohtani's bank account to pay the bookmaker under investigation.
The Associated Press said a spokesperson for the Internal Revenue Service confirmed on Thursday that Mizuhara and unlicensed bookmaker Mathew Bowyer are under criminal investigation.
The report also quoted Bowyer's attorney as saying his client never had contact with Ohtani, including on the phone. The report also said she confirmed Bowyer's home was searched in October.
The Associated Press said it was unable to reach Mizuhara for comment and that the gambling scandal could be one of the biggest for US professional baseball.

LA Dodgers fire Ohtani interpreter amid Seoul series
Japanese baseball superstar Ohtani Shohei excited his fans with his first hit of the 2024 season Wednesday night. It happened in the LA Dodgers' opening game in Seoul. After the game, news broke that has stunned many in the league. The Dodgers tell NHK they have fired Ohtani's interpreter, Mizuhara Ippei.
The Los Angeles Times, ESPN, and other US media outlets are reporting the interpreter was allegedly involved in illegal gambling.
Lawyers for Ohtani tell NHK that "Shohei has been the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities."
ESPN says at least 4.5 million dollars was wired from Ohtani's bank account to an associate of a bookmaker currently under investigation by federal authorities.
Mizuhara had served as Ohtani's interpreter since the Japanese player joined the Angels. He moved to the Dodgers with Ohtani after the star signed the largest contract in sports history.
The interpreter accompanied Ohtani for the Dodgers' opener in Seoul on Wednesday. ESPN also reported that multiple sources including Mizuhara said "Ohtani does not gamble, and that the funds wired covered Mizuhara's losses."
The Dodgers tell NHK they are aware of the reports and are gathering information. The team did not provide a specific reason for firing Mizuhara.

Japan-AUKUS technology cooperation likely topic for Japan-US summit: US official
A senior US government official has hinted that next month's Japan-US summit will discuss technological collaboration between Japan and AUKUS, a security framework of Australia, Britain and the United States.
Speaking to reporters in Tokyo on Thursday, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said US President Joe Biden and Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio are likely to discuss the topic at their meeting in Washington.
The trilateral AUKUS partnership was launched in 2021 in the face of China's increasing maritime activities.
AUKUS currently has two pillars. One is the deployment of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, and the other is cooperation in the areas of advanced technologies and industries.
Campbell noted that he understands Japan's position on the use of nuclear technology in the security area. He said AUKUS's second pillar may be on the agenda at the summit, suggesting that Biden and Kishida may exchange views on cooperation in the areas of robotic engineering and cyber technology.
The US administration has been positive about the potential participation of US allies and other partners in technological cooperation under AUKUS.
Campbell expressed hope for Japan's participation, saying there are clearly areas where Tokyo "can bring substantial capacity to bear in security and technological pursuits that advance common goals in the Indo-Pacific."

UN panel says N.Korea earns half of foreign currency through cyberactivities
A United Nations panel of experts says North Korea carries out "malicious" cyberactivities to earn about half of its foreign currency revenue.
The panel under the Security Council sanctions committee made the allegation in its annual report released on Wednesday. It cited information from a UN member state.
The panel says another UN member state reported that North Korea bankrolls 40 percent of its weapons of mass destruction programs using "illicit cybermeans." The UN monitors call on member states to take preventive measures.
The report stresses that Pyongyang continues to evade sanctions and acquire foreign currency through a range of methods, particularly cyberattacks on the virtual asset industry.
The panel says it is investigating allegations that North Korea stole roughly 3 billion dollars between 2017 and 2023 through cyberattacks on crypto-related firms.
The report says the panel is looking into North Korea's alleged arms supply to Russia. Such transfers would violate UN Security Council resolutions.
The panel says it is also probing a report that the Islamic group Hamas is using North Korean weapons in its ongoing fight against Israel.

Pig kidney transplant recipient recovering well, US hospital says
Surgeons in the United States say they have successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a patient, and the recipient is recovering well.
The Massachusetts General Hospital announced on Thursday that a surgical team had performed the world's first successful pig kidney transplant into a living patient.
The surgeons transplanted a pig kidney into a 62-year-old man with a kidney disease on March 16. The organ was genetically edited to prevent rejection.
The team says the patient is expected to be discharged soon.
Team member Kawai Tatsuo said everyone in the operating room burst into applause after seeing the transplanted kidney begin to function.
The team says the successful transplant "marks a major milestone in the quest to provide more readily available organs to patients."
Efforts are underway in the US to develop ways to transplant genetically modified pig organs into humans.
In 2021, a team of US doctors performed a transplant of a genetically modified pig kidney into a brain-dead patient.
In 2022, a patient who had no other treatment options received a transplant of a genetically modified pig heart. The patient died about two months after the operation.

UN General Assembly adopts artificial intelligence resolution
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling on member states to cooperate on ensuring the safe and reliable use of artificial intelligence.
Member states approved the measure without taking a vote on Thursday. It was proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by more than 120 countries, including Japan.
The document calls on all member states to develop and support regulatory and governance frameworks related to safe, secure and trustworthy use of AI.
It also urges support for developing countries to provide inclusive and equitable access to the technology.
Introducing the draft, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said AI should be used to resolve global issues such as climate change.
She said, "We have the opportunity -- and the responsibility -- to choose, as one united global community, to govern this technology, rather than let it govern us."
The US says this is the first UN General Assembly resolution on the safety and reliability of AI.
This comes as the rapidly growing use of AI poses challenges, such as how to prevent its use to spread disinformation.
