China FM Wang says US has 'wrong perception' of China
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says the United States has a wrong perception of China, and he wants Washington to be objective and rational.
Wang made the comment at a news conference in Beijing on Thursday, on the sidelines of the National People's Congress.
He urged the US to look at China's development objectively and rationally, so that bilateral relations would stabilize and be put on a track to sound and sustainable development.
Wang stressed that China is always willing to strengthen dialogue and communication with the US, to build a bridge for mutual understanding and eliminate unnecessary misunderstanding and bias.
He expressed belief that China and the US will find a way to get along.
On relations with Russia, Wang said the fact that trade between the two countries surpassed the initial target and totaled 240 billion dollars last year underscored the strength and potential of bilateral cooperation.
He noted that China and Russia, as major world powers, have forged a new relationship that is completely different from the Cold War framework.
He stressed that China will maintain a permanent friendship with Russia and deepen strategic cooperation, without forming a bloc or confronting a third country.

Australia, ASEAN call for restraint in South China Sea
Australia and Southeast Asian countries have called for restraint in the South China Sea with China's activities in the area in mind.
Leaders from Australia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations adopted a joint declaration at their summit in Melbourne on Wednesday.
The statement said the leaders recognize "the benefits of having the South China Sea as a sea of peace, stability, and prosperity."
It added they "encourage all countries to avoid any unilateral actions that endanger peace, security and stability in the region."
On Tuesday, the Philippine government said Chinese government ships had fired water cannons at a Philippine supply vessel in the South China Sea, injuring four crew members.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters after the summit that "Australia is concerned about any unsafe and destabilising behaviour" in the area.
He added, "It is dangerous and it creates risks of miscalculation which can then lead to escalation."
The Australian government has announced it will provide 64 million Australian dollars, or about 42 million US dollars, to support maritime security in Southeast Asia.

Japanese court rejects demand to stop Ikata nuclear reactor
Residents of the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Oita have been involved in a legal dispute to suspend a nuclear power plant's operation. But a court has turned their demand down.
The case was brought by over 500 residents. The prefecture where they live is separated from the Ikata power plant by a small arm of the sea.
The plaintiffs say the Shikoku Electric Power Company has not taken adequate measures against earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
They also say the ground could contain problems, including an active fault, but the company has not sufficiently studied the underground structure.
The company says up-to-date safety measures based on the latest scientific knowledge are in place.
The residents are also concerned about the risk of a massive volcanic eruption at Mount Aso, which is about 130 kilometers away. The power company says the risk of that happening while the reactor is running is adequately low.
A district court ruled Thursday that the power company has conducted a reasonable investigation to ascertain the underground structure. It also said the firm's evaluation of the risk of a huge volcanic eruption is also reasonable.
The plaintiffs plan to file an appeal.
This is the first ruling in a series of lawsuits filed by residents in the prefectures of Oita, Ehime, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi. They all want a stop to the Ikata plant's only operating reactor.

Nikki Haley exits GOP nomination race
Former US President Donald Trump has seen one rival after another drop out of the race for the Republican nomination. On Wednesday, the last hopeful has officially stepped aside. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley left after failing to win enough support within the party.
Haley made her announcement in South Carolina after spending more than a year campaigning for presidency. She has conceded to Trump, whom party officials have already labeled the "presumptive nominee."
Haley said, "It's now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him, and I hope he does that. At its best, politics is about bringing people into your cause, not turning them away."
Haley stopped short of endorsing Trump.
Her departure comes after she fell well behind in the race for delegates who will choose the nominee. She enjoyed a single victory on the biggest day of the primary season, Super Tuesday, capturing Vermont, which followed her win in the District of Columbia last weekend.
One person in Washington said, "It's disappointing because it was really refreshing to have someone speak reality." Another said, "She put up a good fight. And now it's, I guess, unfortunately time for her to move on. The math just isn't working for her."
After Haley announced her exit, Trump bragged on his Truth Social network that she "got trounced." He also invited her supporters to back his candidacy.
President Joe Biden also made a bid for Haley voters. He acknowledged that there is a lot they will not agree on, but he said they can find "common ground" on issues such as "preserving American democracy."

Navalny's widow calls for anti-Putin protest during presidential election
The widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has urged Russians to vote for any presidential candidate other than incumbent President Vladimir Putin in the upcoming election.
Yulia Navalnaya on Wednesday uploaded a video message in which she reflected on the presidential election to be held between March 15 and 17.
She said, "We need to use the election day to show that we exist and there are many of us."
She called for people to "come to the polling station on the same day and time, noon of March 17." She also said: "You can vote for any candidate but Putin. You can spoil the ballot. You can write in big letters 'Navalny.'"
The Kremlin appears wary of the possible spread of anti-government moves as election day looms.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday said, "We will suppress any attempts to interfere in our elections."
Navalny's death in an Arctic penal colony was announced mid-February. His memorial service was held at a church in southern Moscow on Friday.
There are suspicions the Putin administration was involved in Navalny's death.
Against this backdrop, Putin's close aide and Foreign Intelligence Service chief Sergei Naryshkin denied the accusation on Tuesday.
Local media quoted him as saying: "I do not think that there had been some special plot. Unfortunately, sooner or later one's life ends. All people are mortal. Navalny died a natural death."

Reports: Russian missile lands near Zelenskyy and Greek PM
A Russian missile reportedly caused a huge explosion in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa on Wednesday, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was inspecting port facilities with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Neither leader was hurt.
Greek media report the missile landed about 150 meters from the motorcade of the Greek delegation.
Zelenskyy said at a joint news conference that there were casualties in the attack.
He condemned the Russians, saying, "They don't care where they strike, whether they are military, civilians, international guests -- it doesn't matter to these people."
Mitsotakis said they heard a big explosion as they were heading toward their cars. He said, "For us it is the best reminder that there is a real war going on here. Every day." He added, "it affects our innocent fellow citizens."
The Greek prime minister vowed continued support for Ukraine.
Odesa came under a drone attack on Saturday. Ukraine says that 12 civilians, including five children, were killed when an apartment building was hit.

IAEA chief meets Putin to discuss safety of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, has held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, southern Russia.
Grossi is believed to have called for Russia's cooperation to ensure the safety of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
The Kremlin said that at the start of the talks on Wednesday, Putin noted that Grossi had "particularly sensitive and important issues on the agenda," and that Russia is ready to discuss them and do everything to protect security regarding nuclear energy.
Grossi reportedly replied that "these are very important times, there are challenges, and we will discuss those challenges."
Grossi posted on social media following the talks, describing the talks as an "important exchange" on nuclear safety and the security of the Zaporizhzhia plant.
Concerns about the safety of the Zaporizhzhia plant remain high as the facility has from time to time lost external power needed to maintain its cooling system as a result of ongoing attacks.
The IAEA has continued to hold talks with both Ukraine and Russia in a bid to maintain the plant's security.
