Biden calls out Trump in State of the Union
US President Joe Biden has delivered the last State of the Union address of his first term. Biden wasted no time drawing a contrast with his Republican challenger Donald Trump ahead of a likely rematch in the November presidential election.
Speaking before a joint session of Congress on Thursday, Biden called out Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine and took a swipe at former President Trump.
He said: "Ukraine can stop Putin if we stand with Ukraine and provide the weapons it needs to defend itself. Now my predecessor, a former Republican president, tells Putin, 'Do whatever the hell you want.' A former American president actually said that, bowing down to a Russian leader. It's outrageous. It's dangerous. It's unacceptable."
And on China, Biden touted his policy toward the country by comparing it to Trump's.
He said, "We're standing up against China's unfair economic practices. And standing up for peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits. I've revitalized our partnerships and alliances in the Pacific -- India, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Pacific Islands. I've made sure that most advanced American technologies can't be used in China, not allowing to trade them there. Frankly for all his tough talk on China, it never occurred to my predecessor to do any of that."
Biden also criticized the former president over his remarks on immigration.
He said: "I will not demonize immigrants, saying they are poisoning the blood of our country. I will not separate families, I will not ban people because of their faith."
On the Hamas-Israel conflict, Biden announced a new US plan to bolster humanitarian assistance for Gaza.
"Tonight, I'm directing the US military to lead an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the coast of Gaza that can receive large shipments, carrying food, water, medicine and temporary shelters. No US boots will be on the ground."
The State of the Union was watched by what will likely be one of Biden's largest audiences in the months leading up to Election Day.

N.Korea's Kim inspects live-fire drills by units 'in striking range' of Seoul
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inspected artillery drills by units that are said to be in firing range of the South Korean capital, Seoul.
North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said on Friday that the exercises that took place the previous day were aimed at strengthening combat mobilization readiness and actual war capability.
Photos show launchers lined up on a beach and firing in unison.
The article said the drills involved long-range artillery units that are in firing range of "the enemy's capital."
Observers say they may have been conducted to prepare for a surprise attack on Seoul.
Kim reportedly called for strengthening all the artillery sub-units so they can take the initiative with rapid strikes "at the moment of their entry into an actual war."
The North Korean leader inspected military units training for war on Wednesday.
His intention is to apparently counter the US and South Korea. The two countries began joint military drills on Monday to prepare for a contingency on the Korean Peninsula.

Human Rights Watch report warns situation in N.Korea has worsened further
International advocacy group Human Rights Watch says people in North Korea are suffering from an aggravated humanitarian situation due to the country's tightening of border controls in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
A report released by the group on Thursday looks into the impact of antivirus border restrictions by North Korean authorities since 2020.
It says satellite image analysis of six parts of the country's northern border shows that almost all of their total of 321 kilometers was fenced in 2022 and 2023, compared to 230 kilometers in 2019. It adds that the almost 500 kilometers of new fencing in those areas was mostly double- or triple-layered.
The report says 6,820 guard buildings or other facilities were detected near the fences, with an average of one every 110 meters. It adds that the number of facilities increased 20-fold since 2019.
It says that according to interviews with defectors and others, guards are ordered to shoot on sight any person approaching the border.
The report says the government's use of "overbroad, excessive, and unnecessary restrictions" has "worsened the country's already grave humanitarian and human rights situation." It adds that the restrictions have severely impacted food security and availability of essential products needed by North Koreans to survive.
Human Rights Watch criticized Pyongyang for putting priority on nuclear and missile programs instead of providing people with basic social services.
It also called on the UN Security Council and concerned governments to press North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to end the country's systematic human rights abuses.

Lawsuits filed against Japan's ban on different surnames for married couples
Six couples have filed lawsuits against Japan's government, claiming the country's laws that ban the use of different surnames for married couples violate the Constitution.
The one married and five unmarried couples living in Tokyo, Hokkaido and elsewhere are demanding damages from the government in the lawsuits filed at courts in Tokyo and Sapporo on Friday.
The plaintiffs and their defense counsel say changing surnames for marriage makes it difficult to maintain credibility and appraisal linked to birth names. They also say changing surnames can cause identity crises for some people.
They said couples who stay unmarried to keep their separate surnames often face disadvantages including those involving inheritance after a partner's death.
Similar lawsuits have been filed in the past. In 2015 and 2021, the Supreme Court's 15-member grand bench ruled the laws constitutional by majority vote. But five justices in 2015 and four in 2021 called the laws unconstitutional.
One of the plaintiffs said he has a daughter in junior high school, but cannot receive legal benefits because he is unmarried. He said he does not want his daughter's generation to live with an unreasonable system in which a husband or wife must give up his or her surname to get married.
