Japan Ground Self-Defense Force resumes Osprey flights
Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force has resumed flights of Osprey tilt-rotor transport aircraft for the first time since a fatal crash last November.
The GSDF has 14 Ospreys deployed on a temporary basis at Camp Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo.
The fleet was grounded after a US military Osprey crashed off the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima, killing all eight crewmembers on board.
The US military lifted its flight ban on March 8, saying the cause of the crash had been determined.
The GSDF put its Ospreys back in the air on Thursday, after completing the necessary maintenance and crew training.
One of three Ospreys parked side by side rotated its propellers shortly after 11:00 a.m. After final inspections, it left the ground vertically at around 11:40. It hovered for a few minutes, and then slowly flew over the camp's premises.
The GSDF plans to begin with basic aerial training around the camp and over the sea, before moving on to advanced training and duties.
Kisarazu City was briefed by the GSDF on safety measures on Monday.

Japan court rejects injunction plea to block construction of Osprey facility
A court in Japan has rejected a plea by a group of residents for an injunction to block the construction of a Ground Self-Defense Force facility for Osprey transport aircraft in the southwestern prefecture of Saga.
Presiding Judge Mitsui Norimasa of the Saga District Court issued the decision on Thursday.
Construction of the facility for the tilt-rotor aircraft just west of Saga Airport began last June. The group of four plaintiffs, including fishers, filed for a provisional injunction last August to halt the work.
Japan's Defense Ministry plans to transfer 14 Ospreys temporarily deployed at Camp Kisarazu near Tokyo, along with three that have yet to be acquired.
But the four plaintiffs say the fishing cooperative sold the plot of land to the government without the permission of all the members.
Those involved with filing the injunction also say they are concerned about safety because Ospreys are prone to accidents.
The government had been seeking the dismissal of the injunction. It maintains the land was acquired in a valid manner.
The ministry aims to open the new facility next year. An injunction would have been effective immediately and could have delayed the plan.

US commander concerned over China's actions against Philippines
The commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command has expressed strong concern that China's repeated aggressive actions against the Philippines in the South China Sea are making the area a "critical hot spot."
John Aquilino was speaking at a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday. He said the hotspot "could end up in a bad place."
Aquilino's remarks come after a Chinese Coast Guard vessel fired water cannons at a Philippine supply boat near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal on March 5. The incident left four Filipino crew members injured.
The commander said that China's "continued belligerent and aggressive and dangerous activity" against US allies is concerning to him.
He went on to say that if a Filipino sailor or soldier is killed, article five of the Mutual Defense Treaty could be invoked.
He explained that it would be his "requirement and responsibility" to provide the defense secretary with options, if that were to happen.
The issue is expected to be discussed at a trilateral summit involving Japan, the United States and the Philippines scheduled for April 11 in Washington.

Ohtani, Darvish wow fans as Dodgers win MLB opener in Seoul
Major League Baseball kicked off the 2024 season with an opening series in Seoul between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. South Korea is hosting the games for the first time.
All eyes were on Japanese superstar Ohtani Shohei of the Dodgers locking horns with veteran Japanese pitcher Darvish Yu. The thrilling opener ended with the Dodgers coming from behind to beat the Padres 5 to 2.
Ohtani batted second in the lineup as the Dodgers' designated hitter. He faced Darvish in the first inning with a runner on first base.
Ohtani knocked a grounder to shortstop, but failed to produce a hit in their first-ever clash.
In his second at-bat, Ohtani drove Darvish's fifth pitch to right field and marked his first hit of the season.
In the 8th inning, Ohtani connected for a single to the opposite field and brought home a runner to extend his squad's lead. After five appearances at the plate, the Japanese sensation delivered two hits, one RBI and a stolen base in his debut for the Dodgers.
Over 250 fans rooted for Ohtani in his hometown of Oshu in Iwate Prefecture.
Another Japanese pitcher, Matsui Yuki of the Padres, made his MLB debut in the sixth inning as a reliever.
He allowed no runs after striking out one batter.

Ohtani's interpreter fired from LA Dodgers, US media say
US media have reported that an interpreter for Major League baseball superstar Ohtani Shohei has been fired from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Los Angeles Times and other media outlets said on Wednesday that lawyers for Ohtani accused Mizuhara Ippei of being involved in illegal gambling.
Mizuhara had served Ohtani since the Japanese two-way player joined the Los Angeles Angels. They moved to the Dodgers during the off-season last year.
He accompanied Ohtani for the Dodgers' opening series in Seoul, South Korea, where he interpreted reporters' questions on Wednesday.
US sports channel ESPN said Mizuhara transferred 4.5 million dollars from the athlete's bank to a bookmaker.

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo wins presidential election
Indonesia's election commission has announced that Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto won the presidential election held last month.
Authorities released the results of the February 14 vote on Wednesday after more than a month of ballot-counting was completed.
The final tally showed that Prabowo won 96.21 million votes, or 58.6 percent of those cast.
Former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan took 24.9 percent, while former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo garnered 16.5 percent.
Prabowo is a former general who founded his own party in 2008. He ran in the presidential election in 2014 and 2019, but was defeated by incumbent President Joko Widodo.
The 72-year old had, however, been fostering ties with the outgoing president. Joko handpicked Prabowo as defense minister in an effort to strengthen his power base.
Prabowo in turn chose Joko's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as his running mate.
The president-elect pledged to continue Joko's policies, which include relocating the country's capital.
Meanwhile, his two opponents claim there were irregularities in both the election campaign and the vote results and have pledged to file a challenge to the election results.
Wednesday's announcement comes as some of their supporters have been taking to the streets in Jakarta to protest the election results on a daily basis.

No tsunami after M5.3 quake strikes near Tokyo
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 occurred near Tokyo on Thursday morning. There was no tsunami.
The quake struck around 9:08 a.m. It registered lower five on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to seven in Tochigi and Saitama prefectures.
Tremors of one through four were registered in many areas from northeastern through central Japan.
Japan's Meteorological Agency says the quake was focused in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of 46 kilometers.
Agency officials say the reverse fault quake occurred where the Philippine Sea plate slides under the overriding plate.
Tochigi Prefecture last had a lower five quake on March 16, 2022, and Saitama Prefecture on October 7, 2021.
The officials are urging caution for more tremors of up to lower five for about a week, as there is a risk of tumbling rocks and landslides in badly shaken areas.
Hirata Naoshi is a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and the head of a government earthquake panel. He notes that the southern Kanto region has frequently had lower five-level earthquakes.
He is urging caution for tremors on a similar scale over the next few days.
