MLB opens investigation into gambling scandal surrounding Ohtani, interpreter

Major League Baseball says it has opened an official investigation into alleged illegal gambling involving Japanese MLB star Ohtani Shohei and his interpreter, Mizuhara Ippei.

In a statement released on Friday, the operator of the top US baseball league said it has been gathering information since it learned about the allegations involving the two from the news media. MLB said its "Department of Investigations began their formal process investigating the matter."

The move follows US media reports that Mizuhara was found engaging in illegal gambling and that he was fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who employed him to interpret for Ohtani.

The US sports channel ESPN has reported that about 4.5 million dollars was transferred from Ohtani's bank account to an alleged illegal bookmaker.

ESPN says during an interview with Mizuhara, the interpreter initially said he asked Ohtani to help him pay off his debts, which had reportedly snowballed from gambling. But Mizuhara later retracted the statement. ESPN says Ohtani only became aware of the gambling issues involving him after Wednesday's season opener.

US tax authorities are investigating Mizuhara and the alleged illegal bookmaker.

ESPN says Ohtani's lawyers have asked the authorities for investigation and claimed their client had been the victim of a "massive theft."

Dozens dead in Russia concert hall shooting

Authorities in Russia say several gunmen have opened fire at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow. They say at least 40 people are dead, and more than 100 others injured.

The Islamic State militant group has reportedly claimed responsibility.

The incident took place on Friday evening in the city of Krasnogorsk. Russia's federal security service is calling it a terrorist attack.

Authorities say several people wearing camouflage stormed the venue before a concert.

State-run television aired footage of flames and smoke billowing from the building.

Government officials say more than 320 workers are battling the fire and engaged in rescue operations.

The RIA Novosti news agency says at least three people were involved in the shooting, adding that there are reports of explosives being thrown.

Security forces are searching for the shooters.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told local media that President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed of the attack, and has since been giving all essential instructions.

More than 60 dead in Moscow attack, ISIS reportedly claims responsibility

Russian authorities say that more than 60 people have died after gunmen opened fire at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow. The building then went up in flames.

Russia's investigative committee is calling the incident a terrorist attack, and the extremist group Islamic State has reportedly claimed responsibility.

The attack occurred on Friday evening in the city of Krasnogorsk, northwest of the capital, as people waited for the start of a concert by a popular band.

Russia's health ministry says that 115 people, including five children, have been hospitalized. More than 60 of them are in serious condition and the number of dead could rise.

Some Russian media reported that the gunmen fled the scene in a white vehicle. Security forces are after them, the media added.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed of the attack and has since been giving necessary instructions.

The Ukrainian side, where Russia's military invasion continues, denies any involvement.

The Amaq news agency, linked to the Islamic State extremist group, quoted sources as saying that the group's fighters attacked a crowd of Christians, "killing and wounding hundreds" of them and severely damaging the building.

News outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, reported that Washington had earlier this month informed Moscow of the potential for extremist attacks.

They attributed the story to US officials.

The United States and Russia have common objectives to eradicate the Islamic State group and have shared information on terrorist threats in the past.

Washington apparently acted in line with what they have been doing against terrorism even though they are gravely at odds with each other over Ukraine.

Ukraine seeks summit in June on 10-point peace plan

Sources tell NHK that Ukraine has proposed an international summit in Switzerland as early as June, likely aimed at giving momentum to Kyiv's plan for ending Russia's invasion.

The sources say Ukraine made the request during informal talks on Wednesday in Kyiv with senior government officials from around the world.

The Group of Seven, Switzerland, and a number of emerging and developing nations known collectively as the Global South attended.

The sources say White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also took part.

Sullivan has revealed that he held separate talks in Kyiv on Wednesday with Ukrainian presidential office head Andriy Yermak.

Russian troops are intensifying their offensive, but Western military support for Ukraine has recently waned.

Kyiv has a 10-point peace plan that calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Some emerging countries have insisted that Moscow be invited to the summit for discussions on a ceasefire.

US to present alternative to planned Israeli ground operation in Rafah

A senior US official says Washington will propose alternatives for eliminating the threat of Hamas in Gaza without a planned Israeli ground offensive in the city of Rafah.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Friday that the proposal would be made to Israeli officials expected to visit Washington in a few days.

On Monday, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said US President Joe Biden invited an Israeli delegation to Washington for talks during a telephone meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He said Biden expressed his deep concerns to Netanyahu over the planned operation in Rafah. Nearly 1.5 million Gazans have evacuated to the southern city.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Israel on Friday that an integrated humanitarian, military and political plan is required. He said US and Israeli officials will discuss details of what they see as the best way forward.

Kishida pledges beefed up defense in speech to future SDF personnel

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio says the government will work to beef up defense and diplomatic capabilities to maintain peace.

Kishida made the pledge during a speech at a graduation ceremony at the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka, near Tokyo, on Saturday.

In his speech, Kishida called the past four years turbulent for the entire world. He cited the coronavirus pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which started about two years ago. He said the invasion is an explicit challenge to the existing international order.

He also said military buildups, including nuclear and missile development, have been accelerating in areas surrounding Japan.
He noted growing attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force. He said Japan's security environment is the most complex and challenging since the end of the Second World War.

He said the government is aiming to boost its diplomatic and defense capabilities to maintain peace and deter security emergencies. He said the government will be united in its effort to achieve targets laid out in three documents on Japan's national security.

About 400 students graduated from the academy this fiscal year ending this month. Of those, 35 have declined to join the Self-Defense Forces. That's down 11 from the previous year.

Russia test-fires cruise missile in Sea of Japan

Russia's Defense Ministry says the country's navy has successfully test-fired a cruise missile from a submarine deployed in the Sea of Japan.

The ministry said on Friday that a diesel-powered submarine of the Pacific Fleet tested a Kalibr cruise missile.

It reportedly struck a target at a training ground in the Khabarovsk region more than 1,000 kilometers away.

The Pacific Fleet is headquartered in Russia's Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.

Russia also test-fired a Kalibr in the Sea of Japan in March last year.

Observers say Friday's test was aimed at keeping the United States and ally Japan in check.

Russia has been at odds with the US over the war in Ukraine, as well as Washington's apparent attempt to increase its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Japan has imposed sanctions on Moscow in tandem with the US.
