US, S.Korean militaries to kick off Freedom Shield drills on Monday
The US and South Korean militaries are to begin their regular joint exercises on Monday. They will simulate emergencies on the Korean Peninsula.
The militaries will carry out the Freedom Shield drills in South Korea for 11 days through March 14.
They plan 48 field training exercises -- roughly doubling the number for Freedom Shield in spring of last year. The drills will include bombing, live-fire shooting and intercepting cruise missiles. They say the drills are designed to deal with a nuclear threat from North Korea.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reports that the US military may deploy strategic arms, such as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and a strategic bomber, to the Korean Peninsula during the drills' period. North Korea strongly opposes those weapons' involvement.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has stressed he sees South Korea not as a counterpart for unification but a foe. He said in an address in February that it is a national policy to occupy South Korean territory in the event of war.
During the Freedom Shield drills a year earlier, North Korea fired an ICBM-class Hwasong-17 missile and several short-range ballistic missiles.
Observers say that in response to this year's exercises, the North may launch missiles that are designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Three in China convicted of running piracy anime website targeting Japan
NHK has learned that a Chinese court has found three nationals guilty of copyright infringement for running one of the largest anime piracy websites targeting people in Japan.
A Japanese industry group, the Content Overseas Distribution Association, or CODA, says a court in China's Jiangsu Province convicted the Chinese nationals in their 30s of operating the site and handed them suspended jail terms in December.
The court said the ringleader of the group had administered the site for profit for about 15 years from 2008 through servers in China, Canada, Japan and elsewhere.
The court recognized that he had unfairly obtained some 250,000 dollars in advertising revenue by distributing over 45,000 video clips without permission.
Before being closed last year, the site, known as "B9GOOD," had allowed visitors free access to many titles, including Japanese animation and films. It gained more than 300 million visits for the two years through February 2023.
Chinese authorities clamped down on the site last year after receiving a tip from CODA. The organization says this is the first time criminal punishments have been imposed on piracy site operators based outside Japan following a Japanese request for a law enforcement crackdown.
A growing number of piracy sites that used to be based in Japan are now being run from outside the country. CODA says it will continue to take a stern approach toward the illegitimate use of Japanese content.

Shehbaz Sharif wins second term as Pakistan's prime minister
Shehbaz Sharif has been elected Pakistan's prime minister for a second term. He will lead a new coalition government.
Pakistan's National Assembly elected him on Sunday following a general election last month.
Sharif, 72, of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, was the nominated candidate of an alliance between the party and multiple allies, including the Pakistan People's Party.
The prime minister-elect is said to be on good terms with the military that has a strong influence on the country's politics. He stepped down as prime minister in August last year.
Sharif said in a speech that his government will be committed to generating employment for young people.
He said, "It is our aim that at least 500,000 young male and female students will be provided special trainings in the most modern technology, use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and will take the IT exports to sky-high limits."
In 2022 Pakistan was struck by devastating floods that reportedly inundated one third of the country. Major industries, including agriculture, were hard hit. The nation remains in economic turmoil as a result of soaring prices and rising unemployment.
A major credit rating company had warned that the country was close to a default.
With the deadline to repay loans from the International Monetary Fund scheduled for April, Sharif will have to tackle the difficult task of rebuilding the country's economy while maintaining negotiations to receive consistent financial assistance.

About 170 people killed in attacks on Burkina Faso villages
Authorities in Burkina Faso say about 170 people have been killed in attacks on three villages. The security situation is worsening in the western African nation with Islamic extremists posing a major threat.
The authorities say the attacks occurred on February 25 in villages in Yatenga province in the country's north. They are soliciting eyewitness information on attackers to identify them.
AFP news agency quoted survivors as saying that dozens of women and young children were among the victims.
Since around 2015, Islamic militants in Burkina Faso have carried out repeated attacks and acts of terrorism, mainly in the country's northern region.
About 8,500 people were reportedly killed in 2023, with more than 2 million people internally displaced.
Two coups led to the establishment of a military government in the country in 2022. The military rulers have since deepened ties with Russia. In January, troops under the Russian defense ministry arrived in Burkina Faso to train soldiers of the junta.
Islamic extremism has also led to worsening security in some neighboring countries in the west African Sahel, leading to military coups over the past few years.
Western nations are increasingly wary that Russia may be expanding its influence over these nations.

Man dies after fishing boat runs aground in waters south of Tokyo
The Japan Coast Guard says a Japanese crew member of a fishing boat has died after the ship ran aground off an island south of Tokyo. It says the other 24 crew members have been rescued.
Coast Guard officials say they were notified on Sunday night that the Daihachi Fukueimaru had become stranded north of Kozushima in the Izu island chain.
Five Japanese and 20 Indonesian nationals were on board the 379-ton tuna fishing boat, which is about 56 meters long.
The officials say 24 people were rescued by helicopter. But one crew member in his 60s went missing.
The Coast Guard searched the sea and recovered the man on Monday morning. He was later confirmed dead.
The officials say they received a report from the boat around 9 p.m. on Sunday that its engine had malfunctioned and it was drifting.
The boat reportedly ran aground about two hours later. Shortly before 5 a.m. on Monday, the captain notified officials that the vessel was tilting and a crew member had fallen overboard.
The Daihachi Fukueimaru is from Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan.
