Kishida instructed LDP to decide punishment over fundraising scandal

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio says he has told the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party to come to a conclusion on punishing lawmakers involved in a fundraising scandal that has rocked Japanese politics.

Kishida said at the party's annual convention at a Tokyo hotel on Sunday that he had directed LDP Secretary-General Motegi Toshimitsu to come to a conclusion.

The prime minister said: "The scandal invited suspicion and serious mistrust in politics. I apologize to the public as party president."

As for punishments against party lawmakers involved in the scandal, Kishida said the party will respond strictly by comprehensively taking various factors into consideration and through discussions within the Party Ethics Committee.

Kishida said the matters to be looked into will include the amount of revenue unregistered in political funds reports, the lawmakers' political background, including the posts they have held in the past, and whether they have fulfilled accountability.

Kishida also expressed the intention to take the lead in reforming his party and politics. He said he intends to launch what will be called "political reform dialogue," in which party executives, including himself, will travel around the country to seek public opinions.

Mossad chief expected to attend Gaza ceasefire talks on Sunday

Ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas are expected to resume on Sunday in Qatar.

The Reuters news agency says the head of Mossad, along with Qatar's prime minister and Egyptian officials, are expected to participate in the talks.

A reported ceasefire proposal by Hamas includes its release of women and elderly hostages in exchange for 700 to 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

It is also reported that after the two sides agree on a date for the ceasefire, Hamas will release more hostages.

The United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, is warning that many children in the Gaza Strip are suffering from malnutrition.
In a bid to address the worsening food shortage, a ship carrying food and other humanitarian supplies coordinated by the European Union and others arrived off the coast of Gaza on Friday.

But the UN agency is calling for openings of multiple land border crossings to allow aid to be delivered reliably at scale.

Russian authorities braced against protest on last day of election

Sunday marks the final day of the three days of voting in Russia's presidential election. Authorities appear to be prepared to quash any show of dissent.

Four candidates including President Vladimir Putin are running for the seat, but Putin is almost certain to secure his fifth term.

Critics of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including a former lower house legislator, were not allowed to run.

The widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny who died in February has called on people to use the election to protest Putin and his government.

Yulia Navalnaya urged Russians to come to polling stations at noon on Sunday to vote for any candidate but Putin or to write "Navalny" on the ballot paper.

Russian authorities have repeatedly warned that people who obstruct voting will be punished and could face imprisonment.

Observers say that Putin and his government appear intent on suppressing any protests to accomplish a sweeping victory.

'World's largest' general election to start on April 19 in India

Nearly one billion people in India are eligible to vote in what is being called the world's largest general election that begins on April 19.

The country's election commission announced on Saturday that polling will be held in phases over six weeks, with all the votes counted on June 4.

More than one million polling stations will be set up across the country where over 960 million people will cast their ballots.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, won a majority of seats in the previous 2019 general election.

The party is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has exercised strong leadership to drive the country's economic growth.
The prime minister has also increased India's diplomatic influence by chairing discussions at international conferences as one of the key leaders of the emerging and developing countries collectively known as the Global South.

The latest polls by several Indian media outlets show Modi's party is likely to maintain a parliamentary majority.

Opposition parties are stepping up their criticism of Modi. They say economic inequality has deepened under his administration. They also accuse the prime minister, who is backed by Hindu nationalists, of fanning religious divisions.

Attention is focused on how many more seats the BJP will be able to win, as Modi seeks his third consecutive term.

Venezuela President Maduro to run in next election

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has become his party's official candidate for a presidential election in July.

But there are doubts about the fairness of the election, as Maduro's main opponent from the opposition bloc is barred from running.

Venezuela's national electoral council announced earlier this month a presidential election will be held on July 28.

In response, the ruling United Socialist Party decided on Saturday to nominate Maduro as its candidate. The incumbent president accepted the nomination.

Maduro said in an address in front of his supporters that there will be "only one destiny" despite of interference or persecution.

He also said, "Here, the candidate is not Maduro. Here, the candidate is the people."

An antigovernment leader Maria Corina Machado, who calls for economic liberalization, has swept an opposition coalition's primary election.

But the country's Supreme Court, which is under the influence of Maduro's leftist administration, decided in January to disqualify her from seeking election this year. The top court upheld a 15-year ban on Machado from holding public office.

Maduro was reelected in the previous presidential election in 2018, with candidates from main opposition parties banned from running in the race.

Three killed, gunman apprehended after standoff in US

Three people have been shot and killed in Pennsylvania in the eastern United States. A suspect later fled to a neighboring state and was arrested.

Police say that a 26-year-old man broke into two houses in Levittown and shot his stepmother, his sister and another person. All three died.

Officials say that, following the shootings, the suspect carjacked a vehicle and drove to Trenton, New Jersey, where he barricaded himself inside a house and took the residents hostage.

Police say the residents were rescued safely from the second floor, but the man remained holed up in the house with a rifle.

The Associated Press quoted the police saying that he was later apprehended.

At one point, authorities instructed people living near the shooting scenes in Levittown to remain indoors.

People celebrate first beach-opening of year on Okinawa island

Locals and tourists have enjoyed themselves at the first official beach-opening of the year on an island in the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa.

They gathered on Saturday for the opening ceremony at an artificial beach on Ishigaki Island.

After praying for safety, beachgoers watched high school students perform Okinawa's traditional Ryukyu dance.

The morning sky was blue over the island on the opening day, and temperatures exceeded 25 degrees Celsius.

People in the sea playfully splashed each other with water.

One visitor said he would come to the beach more often as the weather grows warmer.

A fifth-grader who came with his family from Fukuoka City said the water was cold, but that he had a great time.

More beaches will open in Okinawa toward the end of April.
