Japanese firm Space One's Kairos rocket blows up seconds after liftoff

Japanese venture capital firm Space One's Kairos rocket has exploded several seconds after liftoff from a launch site in western Japan.

The launch took place in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture, on Wednesday shortly after 11 a.m.

Space One says it aborted the flight. The small satellite-carrying solid-fuel rocket apparently developed a problem. The company is conducting a detailed analysis of the failure.

Local emergency services say there have been no reports of injuries.

The rocket was scheduled to put a small satellite into orbit around Earth at an altitude of 500 kilometers about 50 minutes after liftoff.

If successful, Space One would have become the first private Japanese firm to achieve such a feat on its own.

The satellite was developed by the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center. Center officials said they have asked the company to confirm the current situation and determine the cause of the failed launch. They called the loss of the satellite extremely regrettable.

The officials said the satellite was designed to conduct experiments to check whether it would be able to replace existing information gathering satellites. They said the failed launch is unlikely to have a major impact on Japan's information gathering capability.

Biden, Trump secure presidential nominations

This year's US presidential election will likely be a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, now that both men have clinched their respective party's nominations.

The Associated Press and other US media outlets say Biden earned the necessary number of delegates to become the Democratic Party's presumptive presidential nominee, after winning Tuesday's primaries in Georgia and other states.

Media reports say Trump also secured the required delegates to become the Republican Party's presumptive nominee.

Biden issued a statement saying he is honored that a broad coalition of voters has put their faith in him again to lead the party and the country, as "the threat Trump poses is greater than ever."

Trump said in a social media post that the Republican Party is united and strong, and running against "the Worst, Most Incompetent, Corrupt, and Destructive President in the History of the United States."

He urged voters to make America great again.

The political news website RealClearPolitics says polls suggest a close race in a possible Biden-Trump rematch.

Biden had an average support rate of 45.7 percent against Trump's 47.4 percent as of Tuesday.

Hungary Prime Minister: Trump will not give a penny to Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says former US President Donald Trump has indicated that he will cut off aid to Ukraine if he returns to the presidency.

Orban met Trump in the United States on Friday.

Orban talked about the meeting in an interview with Hungarian television on Sunday. He said Trump told him that the former president "will not give a penny into the Ukraine-Russia war and therefore the war will end."

He also said, "It is obvious that Ukraine on its own cannot stand on its feet." The prime minister added, "If the Americans do not give money the Europeans are unable to finance this war on their own, and then the war will end."

Orban is known for his pro-Russia stance despite Hungary's membership in the European Union.

He has stoked controversy by opposing and delaying implementation of the EU's massive financial support for Ukraine, and has openly expressed support for Trump.

Trump's suggestion that he would cut off aid to Ukraine is likely to cause repercussions amid reports of donor fatigue among European countries.

US to provide $300 million military aid package to Ukraine

The US government says it will send a new military aid package to Ukraine worth 300 million dollars.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Tuesday said the funding came from unanticipated cost savings in Pentagon contracts.

Sullivan noted the aid would keep Ukrainian guns firing only temporarily.

This comes as funds for US assistance to Ukraine have run out as Congress is divided over additional funding for the country.

It is the first US military aid for Kyiv announced since last December. Sullivan said the package will include artillery rounds and munitions for HIMARS artillery rocket systems.

School near Fukushima Daiichi holds first graduation ceremony

A school in the town that hosts the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant held its first graduation ceremony since it opened in April last year.

All the residents of Okuma Town in Fukushima Prefecture were ordered to evacuate following the March 2011 disaster. The earthquake and tsunami triggered meltdowns at the power plant's nuclear reactors.

The evacuation order had been lifted for about a half of the town by June 2022. More than 1,000 people are now living in Okuma Town, about 10 percent of the original population.

A school reopened last April for the first time in 12 years.

Manabiya Yumenomori is a combined elementary and junior high school run by the municipality. It also offers pre-school education and care.

In the graduation ceremony, two ninth graders received their diplomas.

Both students returned last year from Aizuwakamatsu City, also in the prefecture, where they had evacuated.

Ishii Nonoka said she had a happy time at school. She said her teachers were kind and she was determined to put the lessons they taught her to good use.

Saito Hana said she had gotten to know local residents. She thanked them for welcoming her and helping her start a new life.

The girls sang a song together before the ceremony closed.
