Ukraine denies involvement, condemns Russia of blaming others on Moscow attack

Russian President Vladimir Putin has insinuated that Ukraine was involved in the shooting attack on a concert hall near Moscow, which Ukraine has flatly denied.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Putin, saying he and others are trying to blame everything on someone else.

Gunmen opened fire at the concert hall in the city of Krasnogorsk, northwest of the capital on Friday. The building then went up in flames.

Authorities say several people in camouflage fatigues stormed the venue before the scheduled start of the concert.

The RIA Novosti news agency says at least three people opened fire, and that explosives were detonated.

Russia's investigative committee has said that at least 133 people died.

Putin said in a televised address on Saturday that 11 people, including four directly involved in the shooting, have been detained.

He said that they attempted to escape and were heading towards Ukraine. He added that, according to information, "a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the state border."

Zelenskyy condemned Putin in his address on Saturday.

He said that Putin remained silent for a day after the incident, thinking about how to link it with Ukraine, adding that everything is absolutely predictable.

The Amaq news agency, which is linked to the Islamic State extremist group, quoted sources as saying that the attack was carried out by the group's fighters.
It released photos of four people it says were responsible for the attacks.

The agency published an article saying it confirmed with intelligence sources that the attack was carried out against the backdrop of the intensifying conflict between the Islamic State group and countries fighting Muslims.

US White House National Security Council's spokesperson said in a statement that ISIS bears sole responsibility for the attack and there was no Ukrainian involvement.

The spokesperson wrote on social media that Washington had intelligence about a planned attack in Moscow.

She said this prompted the State Department to issue an advisory to Americans in Russia.

She also says the US government shared the information with Russia, in line with its longstanding "duty to warn" policy.

FIFA cancels Japan-North Korea World Cup qualifier

Soccer's world governing body, FIFA, has canceled a World Cup qualifier between Japan and North Korea that was scheduled for Tuesday in Pyongyang.

FIFA announced the decision on its website on Saturday, saying it made the decision in the absence of an alternative venue confirmed by North Korea and the lack of space in the calendar to postpone this game.

It added, "the matter and match outcome will be referred to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee."

The announcement followed a notification by the North that it could no longer host the match.

The Asian Football Confederation had said on Friday that the match would not take place as scheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Sources say that North Korea appeared to be concerned about a rise of infectious diseases in Japan.

On Thursday, Japan beat North Korea 1-0 in their first qualifier in Tokyo.

Japan is set to play Myanmar and Syria in June in the second round Group B of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers.
Japan leads their group so far with 3 wins and no losses.

Two losing candidates challenge Indonesian presidential election

Two candidates who lost in Indonesia's presidential race last month allege election irregularities in cases filed with the Constitutional Court.

The country's election commission released the results of February's vote on Wednesday.

After more than a month of ballot counting, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto was declared the winner with almost 60 percent of votes.

Two candidates, former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, say there were irregularities in the election process. Anies took 24.9 percent of the vote, Ganjar garnered 16.5 percent.

The two candidates' camps filed separate cases with the Constitutional Court.

The running mate of Prabowo is a son of outgoing President Joko Widodo. He was initially ruled too young to register, but the court headed by Joko's brother-in-law made an exception.

The two camps question that decision and are said to be calling for the election to be held again.

A member of Ganjar's team, which filed its case on Saturday, said that their aim is to protect democracy and Indonesia's future.

The court is said to be planning to decide whether to dismiss or proceed with both cases by late April.

Philippines vessel crew again injured by Chinese Coast Guard water cannon

The government of the Philippines has said its military supply vessel was hit by water cannon fired by Chinese Coast Guard ships in the South China Sea, causing injuries and damage. This follows a similar incident earlier this month.

The Philippines' National Security Council announced early on Saturday that its vessels were harassed near a military outpost on the Second Thomas Shoal. Beijing claims the area as its territory.

The announcement said the ships were carrying replacement military personnel and supplies, and that China's action caused injuries to the crew, and led to significant damage to one of the vessels.

The Philippine military released footage of what appears to be the incident, as well as other altercations allegedly carried out by China's Coast Guard.

The Philippine government claims the area as its exclusive economic zone. It said the actions show the world that China recognizes "no reasonable or legal restraint nor limitation upon its actions under international law."

China's Coast Guard responded, saying the Philippine ships had forced their way into the waters despite its repeated warnings to stop. It accused the Philippines of intending to disrupt peace and stability in the South China Sea.

On March 5, crew members on a Philippine supply vessel were injured in a similar confrontation. This latest incident prompted further mutual criticism between the two countries.

Dengue fever surging in South America, 700 deaths reported in Brazil

Dengue fever infections have been spreading rapidly in South America. More than 700 deaths have been confirmed in Brazil this year, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency.

The mosquito-borne disease causes high fever and severe headaches, as well as pain in muscles and joints. In severe cases, it can be fatal.

Brazil has reported more than 2 million cases and at least 715 deaths since January.

The country's health ministry says the number of infections so far this year is already the highest of any year since records began in 2000.

Cases have been especially surging in populous regions, such as the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as the capital Brasilia.

Continuing high temperatures and humid conditions due to climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon are said to be behind the rapid spread of the outbreak.
